Unraveling Adoption - podcast and other resources
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 14 ส.ค. 2021
Unraveling Adoption is a safe space to delve into adoption's complexities together. It's a weekly podcast hosted by Beth Syverson, an adoptive mom of a 19yo son Joey who has struggled with addiction and mental health issues for the last several years. Beth is walking beside him as he struggles with his recovery journey while she works on her own personal growth and healing. They are aware that Joey's relinquishment trauma is a core issue for him.
They created Safe Home Podcast in August 2021, which became Unraveling Adoption in January 2023, in order to help other families understand adoption trauma, addiction, and mental health issues, and to destigmatize all of the above.
Find out more about Unraveling Adoption's work at UnravelingAdoption.com.
Beth has a support group for adoptive parents facing adoption's challenges called APtitude. Find out more about that at UnravelingAdoption.com/APtitude.

The Plants Are Calling for the Adoption Constellation with Mee Ok Icaro - Ep 171
"The plants are always turning everything upside down because our culture is upside down." -- Mee Ok Icaro
EPISODE SUMMARY:
In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, I, Beth Syverson, welcome back Mee Ok Icaro, a previous guest who has shared her profound insights on adoption and healing through plant medicine. This episode is particularly special as we recorded as we prepared for an ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica, where I participated in my first ceremony under Mee Ok’s guidance.
Throughout the episode, we reflect on the importance of integration and preparation in the healing process. I share my personal journey with ketamine treatment and how it has helped me move away from antidepressants, highlighting the significance of active engagement in one's healing journey rather than passively relying on substances.

I hope Leslie can find the space in her life to speak more for we "birth" mothers and how the plants may help us. I know the world seems to have moved on from the catastrophic tragedy of WNC but the horror persists for those who live there.
In the ayahuasca space it is possible to reconcile with your birthparents. It is possivle to meet and know your story and what happened to you even if you have no memory, nor documentation. You can also meet your bioparents. Ayahuasca is wonderful for adoptees. Wonderful!
Thanks for your comment, and I'm glad you've had such great experiences with ayahuasca. Reach out to me at Beth@UnravelingAdoption.com if you'd be interested in participating in a book I'm writing about adoption and psychedelics.
I think this is my favorite episode so far! I wanted to hug Beth many times while listening. Peace and strength!
Thanks for your sweet note, Mary!
why would he go by Jack though? his adopted parents were so loving. His real parents probably killed his sister. Hopefully not but in my mind that is what the evidence goes toward. I personally wouldn't want to honor his biological parents. His siblings that are still alive are sketchy too. I understand needing to know 100% I just can't help but not have feelings about his bio parents. His adoptive mom and dad are so sweet even if they are reserved.
Showing adoptee love.
Thanks Corey!
Thank you! I search for other adoptees on tha aya journey. I agree, ancestral plant medicin should only be supported by westerners.

I suggest this author educate herself about the socioeconomic and other factors that drive "birth" mothers and fathers to terminate their parental rights forever and remove their names as the parents from the child's birth certificate when adopted. That is still what happens in an "open" adoption. If someone just wants to help a family in crisis why not just HELP by meeting whatever the need is that is making parenting such a struggle for those parents and extended family? Private adoption is still a primary source of revenue for a 27+ BILLION dollar adoption business. All the pretty picture books and twisted fairytales in the world can never make this make sense.
Hello
It was a very interesting point about adaptation and trauma. I always have concerns about another issue-creating children from sold eggs and sperm and completely cutting them off from one half of their genetic inheritance. How would that impact these people?
Great point! The world of donor conception and third party conception are vast and we have only begun to scratch the surface of the ramifications on the individuals that are conceived without maintaining their genetic connections. A great organization that is looking at this carefully is Right to Know. righttoknow.us/ Thanks for listening and commenting!

Please have a follow-up interview with Belle and her natural mother and/or father. This only scratched the surface of the emotional complexity of an adoption that has a "lifetime contact" arrangement.
I wish the legal details of this adoption had been addressed to clarify how it legally differs from a "closed" adoption and why this was chosen instead of Legal Guardianship.
Great idea! I'll ask Belle if she'd be open to that.
Amazing podcast adoptive mum from Uk
Thanks for your feedback, and thanks for listening! I love it when other adoptive parents find us! 💜
Julian is the best this is good adoptee content!

Preachers get a lot of pu>>¥. 😂😂
Fantastic work. Finally someone has the courage to talk about a very difficult subject. As Dr Joyce said we don't really want to die we just need the pain to end. I am an adult forced adoption adoptee from Brisbane, Australia. I have attempted suicide many times. Not to end my life but it seems to be the only way anyone will believe how incredibly sad I am. Thank-you everyone for validating my experience with adoption. As Gabor Mate proposes, " Not, what is wrong with you, but what has happened to you. 😢
Thank you for your feedback, Lesley. I'm very glad this episode resonated with you 💜, and I'm also very sorry that this episode resonated with you. 🥺 Because that means you've had a great deal of pain in your life. Thank you for sharing your story here. In the week since the book's come out, yours is the type of comment I'm hearing the most -- things like "I thought I was the only one," and "I feel seen." I will make sure that Dr. Joyce, my son, and the other book contributors see your comment too. Thank you and stay safe!
No they don't. I e seen boys say "I'ma girl" as a joke, and vise versa. Thankful, we weren't in this age now and no one had "a conversation" about it. Boy was my family and he grew up a happy heterosexual.
I felt this story to my soul. I also experienced loss and grief through adoption, loss of culture and identity. I am so thankful for her story. Courageous and beautiful soul!
Thanks for your touching feedback. I'm so sorry you were able to identify with Kalanguak's pain and separation. And i'm glad it helped to hear someone else's story. You are definitely not alone, and your grief is real and understandable. 💜 Make sure to look up Kalanguak's website and Facebook blog. She will love knowing how much her story has impacted another adoptee. Sending you so much light and hope...
Thank you ❤
Thanks for listening, Mary Ann!
Thank you for the great interview. I've downloaded the audio book and will review after listening to it. Thank you both for your very important work!
Thanks for your support of the podcast + our wonderful guest! 💜
I was adopted from Juarez/ I am dark and stand out. I was adopted by white people. I don't feel comfortable in either group.
I hope you reached out to Amanda (her contact info is in the show notes), and the group she runs - Fireside Adoptees - is a great place to feel connected. I'm glad her episode resonated with you, and I'm sorry for the hardships your transracial adoption has caused you! Sending you light and hope! Thanks for connecting!
Love his self-awareness. It's interesting he has found community to be so important to recovery. I have often heard this and am searching for my own recovery community. What a great role model he is!
I relayed this message to Joey and it made him so happy. Thanks Mary!!!! Sending you light and hope. There are great communities out there and I know you'll find people who resonate with you if you try a few out.
Joe, you are a total rock star! Way to go 🙂
Thanks for your continued support and cheerleading, Camille! We all really appreciate it. 💜

Thanks for sharing your story, but did you listen to the episode?
@UnravelingAdoption I did up until halfway
Thanks for listening as far as you did. I know this content can be very triggering. I encourage you to keep listening in when you are able, and I appreciate you sharing your opinion.
@@UnravelingAdoption I will try
Amazing interview!
Thanks for listening, and thanks for coming back to write this nice comment. 💜
Righteous anger towards adoption is totally appropriate, as the ancestors mentioned in this interview attest. Abolish adoption.
Absolutely fascinating!
Thanks for listening and commenting, Mary Ann! I agree, I think Helena and her work are fascinating!
I agreed. I wasn't really accepted bc I am autistic and not "hispanic" enough at the church I was working towards my first communion and the church threatened me about not letting me doing my first communion. I was only 7 years old and I still don't feel enough or bad feeling about being inside a church for years bc of what happened. Especially since I was bullied then too bc I am different and no one understands.
I'm sorry that happened to you! Religious trauma is a real thing and is extremely damaging. I'm glad Anthony's clip resonated with you and I hope you have a chance to hear his whole episode. Thanks for engaging with our content! Sending you all the best...
@UnravelingAdoption It's ok, I have worked my mind through it and fine with what happened plus that was years ago now. Thank you and yeah should watch the episode of him just didn't know where to start to look since usually when I try to find stuff, I get a little lost trying to find it but at least the last name is on the video so hopefully won't be too hard to find. I hope you stay safe and have a good day or night depending on where you are from.

@@UnravelingAdoption Oh thank you
An experience I had with my kiddos with a background of food insecurity was that the oldest child would ask other adults if they could give her food for younger siblings. Because I was so new to parenting kids from trauma and there wasn’t a lot of information at that time, I would be so embarrassed and take it so personally. Once I understood this is normal survival behavior for what my child has gone through it was such an “aha moment” for me. And yes, my kids did outgrow it with lots of reassurance that food is always there for them when they’re hungry….but even more importantly, as trust grew in other ways the fear of going hungry became less. It can take years for some kids to really work through it though.
Thanks for sharing your family's experience. It will give lots of people hope and a better understanding of what our adopted kids are going through sometimes. 💜
So true.
Monica is amazing, she packed more information into less time than most and seems to have weathered her early trauma's to become a real force in the world.
Thanks for listening and commenting! 💜 I agree with you - Monica is a force!
Im the subject of being an angry person at this mans mother and i don't even know them!! But the story compels me to have anger for this man!!
I Hope you have a love of a lifetime.
I was an adopted child. I knew my biologicals. I have 2 brothers. I knew my biological family. My youngest brother was adopted first. It took years of foster homes and red tape for me and my other brother to be placed. Only to be separated again bc our prospective parents were divorcing. When we got older we learned of an older sister and another possible sister, (yet to be confirmed) , older than her. My father had remarried and from that 3 more kids(he raised them) , but they were never allowed to talk to us. We found out he had died on Facebook. At this time I had reunited with my mother. She became my "best friend" and I love her dearly, she passed away 3 years ago. I miss her so much. I also had 2 sons both of them I had placed for adoption when they were born. They found me at separate times. I've been open to relationship with them both, but it hasn't exactly been easy. One calls all the time, the other one not at all. They both stated that they had been abused in their adopted homes. Just like me and my brother had been... Anyhow, I have a good relationship with my siblings now ( with the exception of the last 3).
Thanks for sharing you and your family's difficult journey! I have so much compassion for all involved, and I hope you are all finding your healing paths. 💜
I'm so sorry for that rejection. Mothers like this are deeply traumatized.
I'm so sorry sir. It must hurt
My child is artificial insemination child. Donor delivered fresh on day I got inseminated. We found he was in his late 50's when he donated, which is against Univ of Utah policies, and he has around 30 siblings, which I was told he could only have 4 successful pregnancies. Part of the story was on the news in Minnesota last summer. They're all coming to Utah this summer.😮😮😮😮😮😮
This is why I am opposed to alternative reproductive technology. It is so unfair to the resulting human.
😮
Oh my goodness! What a complicated family life! Sounds like you're making it possible for your child to know all their siblings. 💜 Sending your family lots of light and hope!
Don't feel bad. You can't miss what you didn't have. Believe me your better off without her. I regret uniting with my uterine incubator
She didn't want you to have any contact with her so she kept calling you

I'm sorry you have been close enough to it to know that..... 🥺 Thanks for listening!
Thank you! I followed this with her 2 part interview with her birth father. It was so moving 😢
Thanks for listening and commenting. Her story is so powerful. And her dad seems like such a lovely man! 💜

I have denied that adoption was significant reason for most of my life until the process of writing this book. I denied this because I was adopted at three days old and there was so much dysfunction in my adopted family that I put all the understanding there. this podcast was very helpful for me and it must be for so many others who listened to it so thank you
I'm so glad our podcast has helped you uncover more layers of your adoption story! Thanks for listening & commenting, and good luck on your book! If you're looking for ways to get more involved with other adoptees, here's a Community Calendar I maintain. It includes lots of support groups, events, retreats, etc. for the adoption community: UnravelingAdoption.com/calendar And if you work with other adoptees yourself, you can add your name to our Healing the Adoption Constellation Database (UnravelingAdoption.com/healing) using this form. All the best to you!
Thank you I will check it out ❤
