I hope Leslie can find the space in her life to speak more for we "birth" mothers and how the plants may help us. I know the world seems to have moved on from the catastrophic tragedy of WNC but the horror persists for those who live there.

why would he go by Jack though? his adopted parents were so loving. His real parents probably killed his sister. Hopefully not but in my mind that is what the evidence goes toward. I personally wouldn't want to honor his biological parents. His siblings that are still alive are sketchy too. I understand needing to know 100% I just can't help but not have feelings about his bio parents. His adoptive mom and dad are so sweet even if they are reserved.

I suggest this author educate herself about the socioeconomic and other factors that drive "birth" mothers and fathers to terminate their parental rights forever and remove their names as the parents from the child's birth certificate when adopted. That is still what happens in an "open" adoption. If someone just wants to help a family in crisis why not just HELP by meeting whatever the need is that is making parenting such a struggle for those parents and extended family? Private adoption is still a primary source of revenue for a 27+ BILLION dollar adoption business. All the pretty picture books and twisted fairytales in the world can never make this make sense.

It was a very interesting point about adaptation and trauma. I always have concerns about another issue-creating children from sold eggs and sperm and completely cutting them off from one half of their genetic inheritance. How would that impact these people?

Please have a follow-up interview with Belle and her natural mother and/or father. This only scratched the surface of the emotional complexity of an adoption that has a "lifetime contact" arrangement.

Fantastic work. Finally someone has the courage to talk about a very difficult subject. As Dr Joyce said we don't really want to die we just need the pain to end. I am an adult forced adoption adoptee from Brisbane, Australia. I have attempted suicide many times. Not to end my life but it seems to be the only way anyone will believe how incredibly sad I am. Thank-you everyone for validating my experience with adoption. As Gabor Mate proposes, " Not, what is wrong with you, but what has happened to you. 😢

No they don't. I e seen boys say "I'ma girl" as a joke, and vise versa. Thankful, we weren't in this age now and no one had "a conversation" about it. Boy was my family and he grew up a happy heterosexual.

I felt this story to my soul. I also experienced loss and grief through adoption, loss of culture and identity. I am so thankful for her story. Courageous and beautiful soul!

I was adopted from Juarez/ I am dark and stand out. I was adopted by white people. I don't feel comfortable in either group.

Love his self-awareness. It's interesting he has found community to be so important to recovery. I have often heard this and am searching for my own recovery community. What a great role model he is!

Absolutely fascinating!

I agreed. I wasn't really accepted bc I am autistic and not "hispanic" enough at the church I was working towards my first communion and the church threatened me about not letting me doing my first communion. I was only 7 years old and I still don't feel enough or bad feeling about being inside a church for years bc of what happened. Especially since I was bullied then too bc I am different and no one understands.

An experience I had with my kiddos with a background of food insecurity was that the oldest child would ask other adults if they could give her food for younger siblings. Because I was so new to parenting kids from trauma and there wasn’t a lot of information at that time, I would be so embarrassed and take it so personally. Once I understood this is normal survival behavior for what my child has gone through it was such an “aha moment” for me. And yes, my kids did outgrow it with lots of reassurance that food is always there for them when they’re hungry….but even more importantly, as trust grew in other ways the fear of going hungry became less. It can take years for some kids to really work through it though.

I was an adopted child. I knew my biologicals. I have 2 brothers. I knew my biological family. My youngest brother was adopted first. It took years of foster homes and red tape for me and my other brother to be placed. Only to be separated again bc our prospective parents were divorcing. When we got older we learned of an older sister and another possible sister, (yet to be confirmed) , older than her. My father had remarried and from that 3 more kids(he raised them) , but they were never allowed to talk to us. We found out he had died on Facebook. At this time I had reunited with my mother. She became my "best friend" and I love her dearly, she passed away 3 years ago. I miss her so much. I also had 2 sons both of them I had placed for adoption when they were born. They found me at separate times. I've been open to relationship with them both, but it hasn't exactly been easy. One calls all the time, the other one not at all. They both stated that they had been abused in their adopted homes. Just like me and my brother had been... Anyhow, I have a good relationship with my siblings now ( with the exception of the last 3).

I'm so sorry for that rejection. Mothers like this are deeply traumatized.

My child is artificial insemination child. Donor delivered fresh on day I got inseminated. We found he was in his late 50's when he donated, which is against Univ of Utah policies, and he has around 30 siblings, which I was told he could only have 4 successful pregnancies. Part of the story was on the news in Minnesota last summer. They're all coming to Utah this summer.😮😮😮😮😮😮

Don't feel bad. You can't miss what you didn't have. Believe me your better off without her. I regret uniting with my uterine incubator

what an amazing podcast. I’m a psychotherapist and soon releasing a creative-nonfiction book to explain what I call the “traitor within.”the part of me assigned to keep me safe from abandonment and played out for me in romantic relationships. I have denied that adoption was significant reason for most of my life until the process of writing this book. I denied this because I was adopted at three days old and there was so much dysfunction in my adopted family that I put all the understanding there. this podcast was very helpful for me and it must be for so many others who listened to it so thank you
