Happy Birthday "Sam Chatmon" !
Music you feel instead of hear
Who's here 2025💀?
What a tune from the blind pugilist
Back in the 90s my dad bought a Barbecue Bob CD, does anyone know the name of it? I don't know if there was more than one of them. It was similar quality with the pops, hisses and everything still in it.
AS I listen to the lyrics of this song and yaw old people bash the young folks about how they killing each other over clothes but yaw singing and dancing to this song and he killed a man and took a man life for taking his Stetson hat and yaw say they don’t make music like this no more lol
What a sad song about the destructive tendency of machismo especially the exaggerated machismo of black men that feel the need to assert themselves due to their oppression. This song has such a haunting melancholy tone that i didnt always understand in context of the lyrics, especially knowing the story is supposed to be a badass for not letting anyone mess up his hat. He was held up as a paragon of black masculinity but John really conveys in both his take on the lyrics and sound a deep regret and condemnation of the violent act that led to two black men dead. It shows how the society of exploitation they experience without manifests within their own and continues to oppress them.
Still fuckin' relevent to to me after 50 years xxxxxxxxx
My mom always played this song on the piano when we were kids and we all sang along. A wonderful song and voice!
Truly the best

Most Beautiful Lovesong !
Great side!
This is really a remarkably good quality recording for 1928.
Now I know where Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet took their riff inspiration:)
There's a nice cover of this classic by a blues trio of young guys in Southern NJ. See link at th-cam.com/video/GNDuz-pzChY/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
EVERYONE should own at least one Blind Blake record
This man cut a path for other fantastic performers such as BB King, so long live the Blues:)
Forever partial to take 2

'The themes of his lyrics-- unrequited love, traveling, the vagaries of fate-- have a timeless quality; his richly rhythmic guitar work remains an inspirational model of blues playing; the authenticity of his singing is unsurpassed.' TED GIOIA, The History of Jazz, p34.
