Colby Thompson's Reel
มุมมอง 1073 ปีที่แล้ว
A quick demo reel of some of my work over the past year, as well as a mock-up tiny house interview of my DIY tiny home.
Episode Five: Tiny House Finances
มุมมอง 3784 ปีที่แล้ว
In this weeks episode, Aria heads back to work now that Covid restrictions have eased in Vermont. We focus on tiny house expenses, how did we afford to build it? How much do we spend to keep it up? Is it really less expensive than renting or buying a fixer upper? We also showcase our land and discuss why we decided to take out a loan for it rather than parking it at a campground or RV park.
Episode Four: The Hive at Elsewhere
มุมมอง 2474 ปีที่แล้ว
In this weeks episode, Aria takes on the daunting task of picking up her very own nuc (or established colony) of bees and getting them transferred to her hive. We walk step by step through the process, and this may be helpful to anyone looking to pick up beekeeping!
Episode Three: Creating our Garden
มุมมอง 3644 ปีที่แล้ว
A big draw to living "Tiny" is supplementing grocery store food with your own, home grown vegetables. We start a project and discuss what it means to get off our butts and get outside, working in the dirt.
Episode Two: Bees and Building
มุมมอง 3444 ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode we take on some projects that have some big "back to the land" implications, while showing candid moments from living in our tiny house.

How to DROP your VW bus engine (Type IV Transporter)
มุมมอง 33K8 ปีที่แล้ว
The worst has come to pass, and you need to take out your dear old buses engine. Alright, this is where us followers of John Muir and his book take the ultimate test, can we take the heart out of our noble steed? Specifically this is a 1975 VW bus. Step- by- step this video will walk you through the process, from one backyard mechanic to another. Anthony Siciliano provided the awesome original ...
How to: change your air and fuel filter
มุมมอง 9K8 ปีที่แล้ว
DIY for those vanlifers and bus lovers looking to do some routine maintenance to these awesome hippie vans. How to change your air filter (easy!) and how to change your fuel filter (not too bad!) In this video I swap my fuel filter with gas still in the tank, which is nice if you like a gasoline shower. However, if you prefer not to be soaked in petrol, either draining the tank or running the b...
The music is so annoying
Thanks dude!!!!
NEVER- EVER jack the bus using the underside of the engine block. !!!!! You will distort the aluminum there and hence ruin the tolerance of the crankshaft bearings a few cm above it ! The right procedure is: jack the bus on its designed jackpoints right and left. Place it firm on short columns. Now place a big firm flat plate on the jack, place it under the engine, its centre of gravity. Apply very light load, to unload the engine bolts. Now let the engine down. Jacking a Beetle of or even a heavier bus under the block cause distortion. It is COMPLETELY WRONG. You can expect an expensive a line boring of the bearings of the block. Every commenter saying how good you are is wrong. (my opinion only) With KIND gerards, Louis van Rijn.
Me acabo de aventar ese jale es entretenido y se enamora más de la combi .
Thanks man the video was: super useful, easy to follow and well shot !
Thank you for this bro. Peace out and VW on!!
Amazing that the whole thing is held in by 8 bolts. I am still yet to have to drop the engine on mine, however this video is a huge help in planning for that big day.
Dang man, don't Jay Leno yourself! a pair of vice grips would have pinched those fuel lines no problem!
Noice!😎
Noice!😎
Yeh, bud. Just clamp the hoses before changing the filter 👍🏼
Brilliant.
Very cool!
Awesome! You've inspired me to begin our own little garden special. Gardening has been so vital to remaining (relatively) sane during the pandemic. "You have to reinvent how you're living." Heck yes! We all should.
Hey Colby and Aria. I love this video! Love y'all's energy
I've put this learning curve off, and the video was amazing and inspiring. Hilariously I appreciate being reminded to take a shower, because I hadn't extra time for that today. Another person used crimps to block ⛽. Is that bad for the line?
Glad it was helpful! Having learned the shower lesson the hard way, I would definitely sue crimps to block the line from now on, I've had to do it again since it that worked way better
That’s the most dangerous fuel filter change I have ever seen do not do this on spark and you are toasted please clamp the fuel line
Excellent tutorial, well done!
Wish u we’re close to Indiana
Fecking awesome 🤙🏽
WAIT... You took off the tin before you dropped it?
Excellent set up. Iam also from NH originally but have lived in Las Vegas since 99. Im a fellow VW Bus owner and have recently been looking at maine as my offgrid get away from the rat race. My one question above all would be summers. How do you keep cool? Humidity will be something I will have to acclimate to again. Anyway great vid I also followed on Instagram @funknslobus.. Cheers!
Lovely video and music - I'm going to attempt doing this on my T25. Pictures and videos are v. simple and helpful. As an ex-teacher, I salute the clarity & communication
Im currently working on getting my bus running again.. Was my moms.. She has dementia and its been sitting for a few years. I want to get it running to take her cruisin.. This video was wonderful. Thank you
Can’t wait for your next episode. We check every day. Loving seeing your tiny house dreams coming true all the way over here in Kyōto.
Nice vid bud
Thanks for sharing this, helped me alot
Great work once again! One piece of feedback: while you're talking about all of the expenses, it'd be really nice to see these numbers appear on the screen in a running-total fashion, to reinforce the things you're saying. And OMG those shots of your land... GORGEOUS!
Good thought Zach, I think that'd be a good visual queue to go with all the talking. Next time! And thanks dood! That was so fun to shoot :)
Great job homies, I'm so proud of you both and watching this journey unfold... Thank you for this informative video
Thanks Britt, missin you, and there's always space for you guys to come and park it for a while with us if another road trip is in order!
Looking forward to some yummy honey!!! RXmas grab bag???
Congratulations on your new bae-BEES! padumpumching! 😆 Great last two episodes. Good message about being outside for mental health and purpose of life searching for 20-somethings. That's why I enjoy filmmaking, especially documentaries because it brings me outside to new adventures every gig. It kept me physically and mentally healthy. It also introduced me to some great people. Working with Colby on gigs is always a pleasure! Looks like your documentary is great for self awareness and sharing to the viewers. Best to your bees and vegetables farming! Are you going to sell these vegetables and honey at a farmer's market or use them for yourselves?
Amazing video. So well-paced. Love it. Keep it up! The closeup shot of the single bee on Aria's butt made me laugh a lot 😂
fascinating!! my favorite episode so far. bees are way cooler than a cat lol
It's great to see you guys bring something positive and life affirming to this crazy time we live in. "All you need is a shovel", indeed!!
The slow motion shoveling scenes were dope
Love watching you guys. Living.
I feel this! I miss living in the city where I'd walk everywhere or just lie in the grass. Here we go for walks most days but I would love a yard for a big garden. We are starting a little garden on our balcony though and I'm really excited about that!! We have just one little plant so far (a green onion named Fred) and seeing how much he grows every day is amazing. I would be interested in hearing how you check the pH of your soil, if different types of plants need different kinds of soil, when/how to fertilize, that kind of stuff. How long the different plants take to grow, if they will last the winter or you'll need to replant. How to keep animals from eating your veggies. I'm very interested in gardening myself so any kind of practical how-to knowledge you throw in there would be cool :) I have also been pondering those existential questions in quarantine so I found that content very relatable. Figuring out what I want to do with my life, how I want to live. It's not a linear process. I love programming because I'm a nerd so I couldn't imagine a job where I couldn't use that part of my brain, but wow is fluorescent lighting bad for the eyes. If only I could work outside under a shady tree. Sorry for the massive comment clearly I have too much time on my hands haha. Let me know when you get my card!
This really hit deep. Something about working from home during COVID has made it painfully aware for me how much of my life is spent in front of a computer doing work. I'm lucky enough to live in an apartment in a city where I'm very close to some very beautiful green areas, but it's a public space I can't really do much to invest in. So let me know when you open up some lots and need someone new to join and be useful somehow lol
Your tiny house looks AMAZING!!!!
Hey, this is awesome! It's great to see this and your last video showcasing your life in the new home. Your brother was telling me that you guys are tapping maples for syrup. I would love to see how you're doing that. Also wouldn't mind a look at your garden projects! Hope you're well.
you guys should play some music next episode
We'll get an episode in the works for it ;)
Hi Colby ( and Aria) - great camerawork and editing & great project overall - you are amazing. I see a TV series here coming!
Well done video. Thanks
Nice episode! Wish it was longer. Cool foot pump sink to wash dishes. Do you also have a foot pump shower or do you use something like a tabo and pail with water (what I use in the Philippines when I was younger)? Great job building the table and bee house! Looking forward to seeing bee suits episodes and bees. It's supposed to be cold this weekend. Stay warm! Maybe show us some scenes of the snow (if it snows) and how you two stay warm.
Hey Fritz, so glad youve checked out our last two vids :) I'll definitely address those in one of the next ones, but for now, we have a foot pump shower thing and we heat our water on the stove ahead of time, it holds maybe 3 gallons? Im finding it really easy to adjust to things like that, and I'm just stoked on a shower in our house!
love this <3
<3 thanks Christina
You sound just like your father at times
Loving this series! I'm both enticed and very curious about some things, if you ever have a Q/A episode or something like that I'd be thrilled. How do you find limits (or do you) regarding learning new skills/DIY/etc., and when do you find yourself deciding that cost, time, or something else makes it more worth it to look for outside solutions? I know you make library visits, what other parts of "the grid" do you still feel tied into, and is it ever in the plan to replace any of those things with your own contained community and work? Looking forward to the next upload!
Oh thanks Ellis, these are great questions! For a Q&A would you want like a live stream thing or a something more produced, where we gather q's ahead of time and discuss each in an episode?
@@LivingElsewhere Either would be great I'm sure! I suppose if you got a lot of questions a live Q&A would be easier, but something more produced would definitely be nice too
Make more just like this! I would love to see regular ol' vlogs from the two of you. You both have such a watchable, authentic style, and I would love to sit down and watch videos of yours just like this on a regular basis.
Aw man, thanks Zach! Means a lot to hear, and I'm glad you feel that way, figuring out a format for telling stories has been a lot to work through, so many ways to approach sharing with video ;)
WOW! Colby, I love to see you making videos like this again. Reminds me of high school. I love you and miss you both!
I think I was the first one to watch. Are the bees there already? Fun to see you guys at home, doing your thing.
Woo! We just sent the check out for the bees a few days ago, so we'll be picking them up in the next week or two. So excited
