Pre-Stage Check List

Pre-Stage Check List... how to set yourself up for success on a stage. As ROs we see a lot of people show up unprepared to be successful at a stage. This short breaks down Ryan's Pre-Stage process that helps him be prepared for anything a Stage could throw at him. If you have a different method or something you do that Ryan didn't mention, please share it in the comments!

EP:38 Badger Trekker After Action Report
I do like that scoring much better. Most of my DNFs were on the last target.
@heyhayhay247 I think time plus penalties makes it a little easier for MDs to push the difficulty level of a stage without completely tanking the match
Awesome event! I am glad that little teaser at the end! Make it worth it for me to carry my 6mm again! Overall amazing work guys, had a blast, we will see you next year!
Enjoyed the match enjoyed the venue for my first time out to the Lucas Oil ranch. More than anything super excited to hear about the 2025 plans. My son loved running Legion with me this year and we have talked about him shooting when a rimfire variant comes up. This is a great “heard it hear first” that means I’m going to have to carry my heavy ass ar10 to get that prize for making the long shot so he can shoot my normal match setup with the conversion kit dropped in!
@geoffreykennedy3395 awesome! My son is just getting to rim fire age. Looking forward to getting him out there.
For holstering a pistol in the dark, I will sort of drop the light bezel in at a 45 degree angle then roll my wrist forward to slide the pistol into the holster. It's much easier to find the holster and orient myself that way.
@heyhayhay247 I'll have to try that. What I found that worked for me was move the pistol behind the holster and drag the front sight along it until the top opens and it slides forwards and in. That seems to be fairly reliable for me. I'll have to play around with your way as well. -Ryan
@ActionShootingShow sounds like we do the same thing but backwards
Excellent advice.
Lots of folks mess this up
@CRF56 I've certainly failed to do these things before and it's cost me time!
Thanks to both of you for the inside story on development. I really enjoy the engineering and development history. Added Stoner CNC to my list, already had the Action Shooting Show on TH-cam and Instagram.
Thanks Tim!
I don't own any brakes that don't mount a suppressor, but I'm game to try one! Followed both
That's where I'm at right now, every rifle with a brake also takes a can.
Thanks for doing the interview
@@StonerCNC really enjoyed doing it. I definitely learned a lot.
Now following both

@tj6767 thanks! And always feel free to contact us if you have a question. If we don't know the answer I'm sure we have a friend who does.
I have said it before, the guy who dosnt change equipment will end up winning at the end of the season. Solid advice Ryan
@jamesheldman4659 there is a lot to be said with knowing your gear inside and out. It doesn't happen without lots of practice.
Solid advice from a proven performer.
@Nick710 thanks!
I passed right past them on a river cruise earlier this year. No clue this was in the works but very cool!
I’m hosting the PCSL league in Evansville and man it is daunting to start a match from scratch
@matthorton9454 I can only imagine. I took over the match I run so we had a good thing established and it was still a lot of work.
If I were using a phone purchased by the government, sure, I'll do anything with it, but I do not think you should need to bring a phone on a RnG. The military uses phones to gather intel, but they also don't have to worry about replacing it. Matches should just ban phones and make intel that can be done with a notebook and pencil.
@heyhayhay247 I definitely don't think a smart phone should be necessary to be successful at a match. Intel or not, I always have mine as more of a safety net to call if there is a need or emergency so I don't think they should be banned. I guess you could ban people from using them on the course, I'd certainly follow that rule and be fine with it.
And this year it was very doable with pen and paper as that's all I used to answer every questions asked of me. -Ryan
@@ActionShootingShow Yeah, as long as the RO made sure you answered from hand written notes, you're good.
My wife and I designed and ran stage 3. It was a fun one to run.

I ran 5k and loved it
@who.robbjones awesome! Planning on doing it again next year our doubling it next year and do the 10K?
Yeah, we will see how the training regime goes this winter, but after 2 years of 5k I think the 10k will be the goal.

For the BDC crowd it is close to the 800 yard line. The elcan MGO had a 10mz zero line in the reticle. It was around 800.
@jamesheldman4659 good stuff. It's definitely a case of getting out and shooting your gun/ammo/Optic and figuring out the fastest way for you.
Absolutely love steady shots

The near movers were manual. The far movers were electronic and pre programed for movement distance and speed.
@jamesheldman4659 gotcha, that makes sense. All the movers were challenging but very doable.
This show always gives me good ideas on how to improve.
@@jamesheldman4659 glad to help! The match gets better every year.

Good podcast guys
I'm late to commenting. I have questions on how to handle a specific ND. Stage was starting in the driver seat of a car. Car pointed down range. Rifle in amber status(bolt forward on empty chamber mag in) and stuck in middle console area. On the buzzer shooter had to open the door, grab the rifle left the muzzle up and move it between door and A pillar. Then chamber rifle and engage a 15 yard cardboard, 200 yard and 400 yard steel. All shots had to be taken left handed and the shooter had to stay in the seat of the car. There was more to the stage but this part is all we need. The shooter got his rifle out the door muzzle in a safe direction, he went to shoot. His sling was in his LOS. He moved the sling with his left hand went to put his hand back on the fire control . He insisted, put his thumb in the trigger well, and discharged the rifle. The rifle was in a safe direction and the round struck the C zone of his intended target. He DQed himself. Would you have given him a match dq or just a stage dq?
Good question. To start off, I generally don't like the idea of "stage DQs". I personally think it should either be a penelty to discourage an action, or if it's unsafe it's a match DQ. It's in a safe direction so generally, I'm inclined to not DQ someone, especially if I'm not 100% certain of what happened. I think since it's still in a safe direction I'd probably just let them keep going but afterwards give them a little warning that they got lucky and need to slow down. Kudos to the competitor for the integrity to call themselves out when they are out running their sights.
@ActionShootingShow I'm with you on this. The shooter has been around for a long time. He DQd himself and said it's a lesson learned. He also stuck around and helped RO for the rest of the day. I tried to get him to take just a stage DQ instead of a match Dq. His muzzle orientation was excellent, and that's what made this "unsafe" situation safe. I was just curious what you guys would typically do.
Thanks for the AAR. Yes, it’s a balancing act to make the stages difficult, but accessible. I’m toying with an idea to make a Pro class for the folks that want harder. We were originally going to have 8 stages, but we couldn’t get the board to approve the non-traditional range use. Originally stages 1 and 2 were a lot harder, but we would time out or be right at the limit so, Bob made them a little easier. Imho match was time plus points, so having some hard stages that most DNF isn’t a bad thing. I think you need 1 or 2 stages like that. Stage 4 had a sled because we didn’t have a rescue Randy to drag, next year we will. Look for a variation with Randy. For the course, yes it was a lot better this year, my goal is to make it a don’t miss kind of match and not the normal RnG. Look for it to increase in challenge next year. Jeremy Swofford was the food truck guy, excellent food, fyi.
Jeremy's cooking is world class. And he is a world class human. Sounds like a fun match and I hope I can make it in the future. The course sounded fun as well. I'd much rather run thru woods than asphalt and gravel roads!
Night Ops RO is apex RO.
Any Night match is harder to RO. Rain and adverse weather more so.
#masterclass
"False summit" is a contender for that hill's name.
The box is probably going to be my legacy contribution to the sport. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you describe it.
I have a DMR match in a month or 2 I'm putting on and I'm hoping to have time to build one before then. Maybe even a little tighter depending on what wood I have laying around....
Thanks for the shout out, Sean. You have always been one of my favorite shooters. I tell everyone I taught you how to shoot pistol.
How is the muzzle flash signature at night?
I'll have to check that out. I can't remember shooting this at night yet as the night matches I've been shooting have been under NV and I've borrowed a more appropriate gun from a friend.
I ultimately want the event to be safe, but I also can't stand being around people who treat a gun like a grenade with the pin pulled. Respecting the firearm and fearing the firearm are very different things. I was turned off of USPSA events because some old fudd will call 180 on someone when it wasn't even close or I'm not trusted to holster an empty gun myself when getting ready at my car. Conversely, I can come to the starting line of a gun run with a hot pistol safely in the holster. I guess it ultimately comes down to I really don't like being told what to do when I'm already doing the right thing or being treated like a child.
100% as an RO I do everything I can to keep from DQing people. Generally, RnG seems to balance safety well even with all the dynamic movement. I've also been to matches where people seem almost excited to DQ people and that's not the attitude we should have. ROing for the years I have I've sadly had to hand out some DQs but I always feel bad because I couldn't help prevent it. -Ryan
