Exploring Clear Creek | Seeking New Idria [Off The Beaten Track Episode 16]
มุมมอง 31614 วันที่ผ่านมา
We explore the rugged beauty of Clear Creek Management Area (CCMA), a remote and vast public land in California's Coast Range. The striking landscape of serpentine hills, rich in natural and historical significance, is a sight to behold. Much of the land contains serpentine, the state rock of California, which harbors veins of naturally occurring asbestos, shaping access and conservation effort...

    I have really enjoyed "binge watching" many of your great videos tonight. Living in Paso Robles, I have traveled across many of the same roads and learned of new roads to explore, thanks to you. During the mid seventies I visited the 7X ranch as a teenager when it was occupied by the original owner. During the past decades, it has become a place for outdoor education, mostly for youth and is now called Camp Natoma (link below). Friends of mine had owned a large ranch above the summit of Cypress Mtn Road, quite a beautiful place. I learned from them of the historical significance of the area including the longstanding presence of the Native Americans as evidenced by non-native plants they brought to the area (still present today) and many artifacts they used as tools. If you click over to my youtube channel I think I have at least one or two videos from above Cypress Road. As another had commented, the overlay of the route in sync with your video is really cool and the first I've seen such a thing on any other videos. Also the 3D map at the beginning is really slick. Props for your excellent video production. I am looking forward to seeing more of your channel and I promise I won't ramble on as I have here, lol. Camp Natoma Link: www.campnatoma.org/about.php

    Those coastal mountains are loaded with amazing scenic roads that have been intentionally left un maintained so as to keep the general public out . I learned all of this when I decided to set out and explore the Rocky Butte Truck Trail out of San Simeon and connect over to the Coastal Ridge route. Nope , everything is behind a locked gate and only property owners have keys to open the gates. A contractor was going to let me pass the first gate but then told me I was going to have to go through the Hearst property and that was going to be another 2 gates to unlock. Indians road was my backup plan lol

      Yeah I’ve scouted Rocky Butte Truck Trail on maps and I’ve read accounts online from people who have driven over there in years gone by. Seems like it’s behind gates these days as you say. Most of the trails in Los Padres are similarly closed for one reason or another.

    Love this. My wife and I are from Mississippi in the USA. We have been to Skye several times. We stayed at the Slgachan hotel the first time and then in B&Bs near Portree the others. A great way to get to the Fairy Pools is to hike from Slighachan. There is a really nice trail along the river. The climb is not too bad and then you can either go straight down to the Fairy Pools or make a loop around and come back. I am not sure, but probably between 10 and 15 miles depending on you you make your loop. It is gorgeous. We have also driven to the Fairy Pools and used the Car Park and hiked down along the burn to the Pools and then to what we call the Lonely Mountain at the end, I looks just like the Lonely Mountain on the Tolkien Map. God bless the UK and Scotland. We love it.

    Most of CCMA is San Benita Co. The roads are San Benito Co roads. Not BLM roads. The Natural Asbestos in CCMA is chrysotile. Harmless! The chrysotile type is a curly cue fiber. Amphibole are the needle type that are Hazardous. Non here in CCMA. CCMA was wrongfully closed to offroad recreation. EPA falsified documentation with instructions from BLM to force its closure.

    • @fourwheeltravel
      @fourwheeltravel 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Per the BLM site, “Clear Creek Management Area (CCMA) encompasses approximately 75,000 acres, of which 63,000 acres are public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management Central Coast Field Office.” If you look at a map, it’s basically a big rectangle, with areas of state and private land ownership within it. CCMA is contained entirely in San Benito County (historically Monterey County until the establishment of San Benito County in 1874). This does mean for example that New Idria mine was established in Monterey County. As to whether the roads are BLM or state roads, that might be a technicality since they are within the CCMA and have BLM route designations (Clear Creek Rd is BLM route R1 for example). On the safety concerns, I would note that chrysotile asbestos (‘Calidria’ as the King City Asbestos Company/Union Carbide named it) is banned in 50 countries worldwide.

    The whole asbestos thing is a farce. The dangerous asbestos is refined asbestos. There used to be AMA National Enduro races ran yearly down there from the 70's, 80's into the 90's. As a long time dirt biker, Clear Creek was possibly the funnest place I had the privilege to ride and explore.

    Definitely give the BLM Central Coast Field Office a call if youre looking for CCMA information! Also theres georeferenced maps on the web site for loading into Avenza. FYI, the road from the new idria side CCMA gate to New Idria is not BLM property and the road is a much more technical drive as the road continues to deteriorate without anyone performing maintenance. New Idria is more easily accessed from Panoche/New Idria Rds. Last i heard the washout was repaired as well.

      Hey thanks for commenting! I did find myself without a map, which was due to an unfortunate incident where my phone was reset, causing me to lose the offline maps I'd prepared. I plain forgot that the phone reset would have wiped the map data. Also, I showed the Overland Bound logo in the video with a bit of a wink, because my team and I built Overland Bound One, which is an offroad mapping app. :) Yeah, I've heard it is more technical beyond the ACEC, wanted to find out for myself. I was also wondering if the northern access along New Idria Rd is still washed out, have not seen a news update on that.

  • @mredofsc1937
    @mredofsc1937 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Great video! It's a shame that you didn't make it to New Idria (should have turned right instead of left at that first decision point). I do hope you make it to New Idria in a future video--- it has been a few years since I have been there & I am not sure if the road from there to Panoche Rd is open again as it was flooded out a few years ago; I heard somewhere ((on a TH-cam video?) that that road is passable, through the flooded out part, with a 4WD vehicle but the signs on Panoche Rd still say it is closed. Also, the BLM/Marina office has, or used to have, a brochure with a map of the Clear Creek area. But, since BLM, in my experience, has not been too keen on recreation in that area, they may not carry it anymore. The info kiosk at Oak Flat Campground may have them as well. I will be looking forward to your video finding New Idrea.😄

    • @fourwheeltravel
      @fourwheeltravel 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! I’ll be sure to go back, I really want to get over to New Idria. I didn’t see maps at the kiosks, but then again, I really didn’t look too closely. I was prepared for the trip with downloaded maps on my phone, but then my phone was reset and I just plain forgot that I’d lose my offline maps - very little phone signal out there! It was a fun trip, I was not so much lost (going back was easy) as disoriented. Does the first decision point also lead to New Idria if you go straight? It seems from the map I was looking at that Clear Creek Road takes that hard left at that point. I guess there might be multiple roads up there.

    • @mredofsc1937
      @mredofsc1937 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@fourwheeltravel Yes, lots of roads up there! The hard left at the first decision point was correct, the second left decision point was not. I have been up there a couple of times, the first time I was lucky in that I came upon some BLM workers who pointed me in the right direction (& who also told me I was in a forbidden area) but that was many years ago. The map that I have can be found on the BLM/Marina website. There are two maps there, one a pretty detailed Topo Map & the other the map that is in the brochure. This second map doesn't show either of the decision point roads but it is downloadable to a phone. And, New Idria Rd from Panoche Rd appears to open now, at least that's what some of my internet searching shows. Good Luck --- am looking forward to the rest of your trip!

You can see that they or one of their associates sent a jeep out there right up to Escondido Campground. It looked pretty interesting, so I immediately made plans to go out. Great video! Thanks for mentioning cyclist. I'm watching with the intent to ride through there this weekend (I'll watch out for 4 wheelers too). Thanks for the info and great shots of the road conditions, now I can make a good tire choice😀. Love the little trail map on screen and commentary on history, camping etc. I believe the red trees are Madrone (though ill see for myself) Manzanita are smaller and kinda more bush like.

      @@Squirlybumrush thanks for watching & commenting! You may well be correct on the trees - the red color is very striking. I do love reading up on the history and geology of these dirt backroads, the Klau and Buena Vista mines in particular were very surprising (that it is an EPA Superfund and the impact on the area esp Lake Nacimiento).

    I lived in the canyon to the left of the gate at the end of the road from 1984-1987. Lots of trouble came from that direction, and my sign in those days said, "Hunters will be hunted". The local sheriff made me take it down. Rough country, great people in that area. From Google earth, it looks like someone is once again living up there.

    • @fourwheeltravel
      @fourwheeltravel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for commenting! There are 2 signs on the gate right now, one polite and one with F-bombs. I’m sure there are good reasons for the sign. We’ve owned property on the continuation of that road since ‘97, but many (understandably) locked gates block access from the other end. The W15 is a real curiosity!

      @@fourwheeltravel My legal access in those days was from Jolon Road, off Argyle Road, if you know that area. It was 7+ miles of dirt that way to Hall Canyon where I was staying. W15 was the back way out, better access to Lockwood, the other way was better access to Fort Hunter Liggett where I worked in those days.

From the Google Earth fly-around at the start to the call-outs of POIs, the hyperlapse at the end, multiple cameras and an overall intelligent narrative, just a very fine piece of work. It's eleven and a half miles. I had the good fortune to spend several years driving it. It's not a good idea for tourists to travel on the road, and it's not a tourist-friendly road for urban drivers. Mike! Mike Trotter, fourth generation.

      Thanks for your comment. We’d agree, and as noted in the description and in the video, “We would recommend a high-clearance vehicle. The road is rutted in places, and rocky in others. We would strongly advise against attempting this without at least all-terrain tires, and four-wheel drive or at least all-wheel drive is recommended. The road is impassable when wet, and if you've traveled this route, you will know why - there are shelf roads with sheer drops of hundreds of feet interspersed throughout the track, and there's no way I'd want to be out here in slippery conditions!”

    Also, the San Andreas fault runs straight through the middle of Carrizo Ntl Monument, north to south, up to Parkfield. You can actually see/follow the fault which is in a gully.

    • @fourwheeltravel

    My friends and I have ridden so many of these roads you are exploring. Elkhorn rd and Hurricane rd in Carrizo. Two favorites. Elkhorn parallels Soda lake rd north to south but on the east side of the plain at the base of the Temblor range. Hurricane rd goes up over the pass to the Taft area. A lot of spurs/side roads/primative camp sites. Just leave it like you found it.
