The Russians know how to build ’em, 80,000shp if I remember correctly. Turboprops are the loudest thing I’ve ever been near or heard. Interesting how you could hear the props pitch change just before takeoff too. Sure one of these went over at high altitude recently, I could hear it for a full 5 mins droning into the distance. Magnificent.

Someone much smarter than I am, understand the counter-rotating props. It's fairly unusual on modern day aircraft, but it obviously works. I just don't understand the advantage of two props, rotating opposite and so close together.

Are those engines electric or bleed air start?

Mega ! Thank you very much for the video. The tone of the contrarotationg propellers is very good to identify. I wrote a litte excel table to estimate speed according to the change of the audible sound. We hear the rising tone when the aircraft accelerates and we hear the sudden decreasing ot the tone when passing the location of the microfone. I hear 9 half tones which is equivalent to 170 kts or 314 kph, which is quite a lot especially for a prop aircraft to take off - must be heavily loaded! The acceleration till to the point leaving the ground lasts 41 seconds which means the full loaded aircraft gets 100 kph faster every 13 seconds. This es definitely not bad ! ! !

i live right under one of the main flight paths in the uk (west midlands) and have hears the 22, 124 and 225 fly overhead before, such a distinct sound to them
