    I can't seem to find the one I was looking for. I remember at the start of the game, you rode a horse around a lake, between the mountains. And then you had to approach a horse who was a little skittish.

    This console is bad the Atari 5200 7800 Intellivision and even colecovision put it to shame I give it a 2 just for its graphics for the year it came out initially ports and most games just seem less fun and engaging than the systems of the time

    What people don't realize is virtually all of these games are Amiga 1200 games just ported over in 1993. The console died in less than a year. This had a slightly faster processor than the 3DO and it had 2 MB of RAM which was very good for 93; unfortunately, its one major weakness was that its graphics system wasn't built for 3D. If you look up Amiga titles from the mid-90s they do look far better, but this thing was never going to yield a 3D library. At best, it could handle pseudo-3D like Doom and Wolfenstein. The Saturn and PS basically blew this thing out of the water.

    Some good games on that console. I've often found though that the VCS games are smoother and often more playable. Likely to do with the architecture? I read something about that and why it led to such perfect, smooth scrolling on so many games.

    • @retroreplaysvault
      @retroreplaysvault 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s a great observation! The simpler hardware of the VCS likely helped in delivering smoother gameplay and scrolling. It’s fascinating how different architectures impact game performance!

    • @Hologhoul
      @Hologhoul 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@retroreplaysvault It is indeed! I think what I read was that the architecture kind of forced programmers to code in a way that created smooth scrolling, I might try to find the piece again. Of course, not every game managed it. The Vanguard port used block scrolling, still a nice game though (great colours!)

    I have a soft spot for these kinds of post-Atari 2600 pre-NES consoles. They were more advanced than 2600 but not enough of a leap forward to catch on like NES did, and none of them survived past 1984. They’re a capsule of a very specific time when the whole industry was up in the air

      Great observation! Times Up is a homebrew game with a physical release, which is why it features Nintendo characters despite not being officially associated with Nintendo. That’s also why you don’t see any official mentions of the company.

    Looking back on model 2 and model 3 to some extent, there's a definite lack of flair in how the graphics are rendered. There are no transparency effects, and even on model 3 everything still has a kind of "flat" sense to it despite the textures trying to give an impression of depth and complexity. I guess there's a reason they made so many racing games 🙂 At the time i couldn't believe the fidelity of what I was seeing, but now I see more of the shortcuts and the limitations, I guess. The xbox has this look too it as well i think. It's like the last evolution of this style of graphics before we discovered other mapping techniques.

    • @retroreplaysvault
      @retroreplaysvault หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's interesting how those early systems pushed the limits of the technology at the time. The evolution from flat, textured graphics to more complex techniques really highlights the progress we've made in gaming visuals.

    • @darren8453

      @@retroreplaysvault yeah I remember the hardware being the limit of what you could *do* - for instance quake was so demanding because it was no longer a "corridor" shooter, doom took massive shortcuts in level design to simplify all the calculations. Even in an arcade setting, it seems like there was still a raw limit in how many polygons and textures you could throw at the screen.

    Sega Naomi was twice as fast CPU + had twice as much RAM to the Dreamcast. The fall of the Sega was that they couldn't get a good deal on the "3DO CPU No.2". (The next one from Sega would be a "pure" arcade console.).

    • @retroreplaysvault

      Good point. The stronger hardware had potential, but missing that CPU deal really hurt their progress.
