Dude, your discussion ….you were sitting at a table! Expanded wire mesh, would be a fine table top to use it on, definitely not on wood or plastic top tho. At least you admitted you goofed up! Ha ha
Yeah, I definitely goofed up. Just didn’t think about it since I’ve tested so many tabletop fire pits on it before lol
Impressive very fast 🎉
Thank you!
Mistakes happen and you learned from them now you know 😅
So true
Reviewing how well fire boils water. I mean, it's fire, kinda hard for it not to boil water.
It from a long form vid of a review of a fire pit and how well it works
I actually appreciate, and respect the fact, that you kept it real.
Thank you!
Yea me too
As he sets it on same table diff spot lol glad he caught himself
Yep lol brain fart
Underrated video you have a good personality for content creation
I appreciate that! Thank you
😂😂😂😂 love it, sucks but hey, it never happened
That’s right lol it never happend
@@Homedadgriff if you have smokers in your house, that center looks like the perfect place for an ashtray.
Pellets burn more efficient and cleaner, but don’t offer any character with the crackle and what not. I use pellet as to not smoke out the neighborhood.
👍
how big is your ring inside?
27in inner diameter
The no name issue is that it's not able to provide as much air as the others. Drill a few more holes and your good to go.
Did you fill the inside with rocks or just leave that bottom layer of blocks exposed to the fire?
Just the blocks
@@HomedadgriffTy!
Looks good but I'm wondering why you didn't sow grass seed in all of that flat area. It's going to be a nightmare to clean up leaves, etc out of that mulch and especially the pine straw.
I like the mulch look it has not been to bad with the leaves
I see you can buy stands similar to the solo stove, but they are around $40... At that point you might as well just buy the solo.
very true
Literally surrounded by wood..."I bought some wood off Amazon" LOL
Yep
This video made me realise that no one really needs a table top fire pit. If it's that cold, maybe it's the wrong time of year to be sitting outside, or maybe you're wearing the wrong clothes. These fire pits are intended to keep their manufacturer warm, sort of like most fishing gear is designed to catch anglers.
Good deal I’m glad I helped you with something
Kingsford charcoal chimney starter for 14.99 is by far the cheapest and best heat output. You turn it upside-down with the holes being at the top, it controls the fire and heats the stainless steel far better without soot or at least not a ton. Cheapest and it fits the Mesa Solo XL perfectly.
Thanks for sharing
I usually start these from the top with tightly packed wood.
Thanks for the info
9:32 I like your kido’s corner table! So cute! I’m sure they’ll enjoy eating and playing there
Oh yes, they love that table. It’s a little hub for crafts and everything.
i wanna try meeting in the middle with some woodchips
14” aluminum pizza pan and a tomato garden basket cut down would come in under $30 and give you greater coverage
I would just be worried about stability
Very good demonstration, that helped me a lot.👍🏼 So I chose the East Oak. 😊 What I'm missing would be a suitable heat shield. Do you think there will be anything else? Best regards ✌🏼
Thank you I’m glad it helped. I am keeping my eye out on East Oak. I am hoping they come out with a heat deflector. If they do I’ll be getting it and will let everybody know.
The simple safety of the Solo version is a major factor that might not show up under the heat results but can't be ignored. The thought of a drunk friend bumping the table when they stand and someone getting burned won't look good on an insurance claim.
I 100% agree
Mortar will hold this and be resistant to the fire.
This is too many holes and 0.75” may be a better size.
Drill the wholes before assembly. Drill from the inside out for a cleaner look. That way you can use a backer board for drilling.
If i could go back that is what i would of done
With pellets ITS ALL SECONDARY burning. There is almost no primary burn. Air cannot rise adequately from the bottom unless it's wood twigs. The "cheap one" either has no outer and inner (2) channel in the walls or it's channel is very thin. It's probably not meant for pellets. The fair test is wood pieces.
They are all meant or either wood or pellets and yes, the cheap one does have a channel.
The East Oak was very tempting to me after this video, however it looks like the East Oak has that interior cylinder that takes up a lot of the volume for me to put in fire wood instead of pellets. The Solo Stove interior seems to look like it allows me to toss in my sticks of wood...? Current deals you can get a Solo Stove Mesa XL at $80 or you can get two Mesa XLs for $50 each from previous Costco deal.
The center column is optional. It can be removed and use the same without. I have a Costco membership and I’ve never seen that deal if it comes up again I will pick it up where are you from the US?
Good job. The experience one looks so much better. I would be worried about the cheap one with kids around! Thanks for the information
Glad it was helpful!
Are you able to fill it back up after its almost burnt out?
Yes, after you start seeing it kind of slowly dying down I put about a 1/2 cup to a 1 cup of pellets in it to get it back going or you can follow up with wood either will work I have a video on my channel called Wood vs. pellets explaining all of that.
Did you use the same amount of pellets in each stove?
The solo 2.2 pounds the cheap one holds 2 pounds and the Eastoaks holds 2.75 pounds
Great video
Thank you!
Thanks for the comparison! I love my $80 Solo XL (also have a Bonfire with the surround). I do wonder if the extra half pound of pellets is responsible for the 10-minute longer burn on the East Oak. How easy was cleanout? With the XL, I rarely have to do more than remove the fire ring and dump the ashes. How does that work with the East Oak’s center tube? Lastly, I sometimes use wood chips in my XL; that doesn’t seem possible with the East Oak.
It’s really easy to clean out you just pull the ashtray out and dump it. The center column is not mandatory when using so you could burn wood chips in it if you wanted to just take the center air column out. I have another video where I’m comparing wood pellets vs wood and I don’t use the center column for the wood.
I bought the solo stove about 6 months ago. It was in a two pack for $100, so $50 each. I think you got ripped off.
Don’t know where you got it at but good for you. I’m glad you got great deal
@@Homedadgriff Costco
Solo is most known, but the price reflects all the $ they put into marketing. East Oak seems like a good way to go
Bought a knock off on Temu similar to the one you have and it gets the job done, no complaints. Great for camping/outdoor trips at dusk to get a quick fire going to have something without starting a bigger fire and saves wood.
Great to hear!
@@Homedadgriff good series of videos and content. 👍
Thank you!
Does it perform? Would've been great to see the flame come out of the holes which is what makes it smokeless. I think drilling the holes higher up would allow for better functionality as any wood above the holes will still produce smoke when burning. Thanks for the video
Yes, it does perform. I was also thinking about taking the blocks that I put in the bottom of it and finding something thinner so the wood would be lower in the pit.
I think it comes down to energy density to be completely honest- look at the physical density of the two sides- pellets burn more evenly with less explosive heat, but that wood burn releases more heat and heats a larger area- but for shorter.
How often and how much pellets to keep the fire at full burn in the East Oak?
About 1/2 cup to a cup every five minutes or so after it starts to die down
You would like the ozark trail fire pit at walmart
That’s what I hear. It may make an appearance at some point.
Great review. Thanks v much.
No problem thank you!
No problem thank you!
Great job
Thank you!
From other videos I’ve seen, you overfilled all of them apparently you are meant to add fuel throughout the use
Nope not overfilled according to directions you are supposed to fill them up to right below the top holes. If you would like to add pellets throughout use that would be fine too. I don’t see why not.
The one thing you didn't seem to cover was the amount of ash generated by pellets vs wood, which I would be really interested to hear about. We have a Solo Stove Ranger and a Mesa XL and use a combination of fuels including kindling and woolly firelighters to start, kiln dried wood, coffee logs and compressed smokeless logs and find this works great. It might be cool to add some pellets into the mix too - particularly for the Mesa XL which is too small for the coffee logs and smokeless logs. The other thing you need to take into consideration with the fire pits you have bought is their longevity. I am in the UK and first saw a Solo Stove on a caravan park we stay at. The Solo Stoves have been outside, uncovered for three years and are still absolutely fine. Would the other two fire pits stand up to that? Is the grade of steel as good as that used on the Solo Stove. They may well be, I don't have them to compare. Interesting point though that might dictate the price point of each item.
I will say that the pellets do create more ash but not a lot more. As far as longevity we will just have to see, but I’m not too worried about the East Oak. It is made out of the same 304 stainless steel as the solo stove and very solid build. as far as the cheap one as you can expect, it’s very light compared to the other two not sure what it’s made out of but the walls seem to be thin, but again it was only 20 bucks.
Did you measure how much fuel each holds?
The solo 2.2 pounds the cheap one holds 2 pounds and the Eastoaks holds 2.75 pounds
@@Homedadgriff thanks for the reply
The project is looking great. Just a caution on the placing of mulch. You do not want mulch going up to the siding or foundation of your house for reasons of termite tunneling not being spotted and the rotting wood also draws termite concerns. Placing rocks or river stone is a safer choice.
Thank you for the information. I appreciate it.
wood in my experience...pellets are too smokey
Simple straight forward instructions. Much appreciated video
No problem thank you!
Brilliant video, and greetings form 🇬🇧
Thank you!
Just an heads up, if you want the mulch to stay in place consider spraying it with mulch glue. That thing works wonders
I thought about doing that, but I was thinking it was going to take so much glue.
