Makes me feel old.😂
I was there...football heaven 😂
that tackle by hughes ❤❤
Keith Valley was a good friend of my old man, so I got to do thing's like have a kick about with Sandy Allen on the 'Downs' one weekend - I was very popular with my mates from then on. Still follow The Gas.
i was there , recall walking from the city centre to Eastville ,sat in the South Stand
The Watney Cup - Yet more subject matter for the mighty HMHB.
But no blue white quarters which was in our favour
It was a scrappy game a farce really
I bet The Black Swan, Eastville was bursting at the seams after the game!!
i was there very happy days ☠️
Gerry's mullet should be in the national football museum... Gas got robbed and got robbed again by the same ref away at Tranmere a year or 2 later... Loved the team we had back then, so many happy memories
that was one good day out remember it well only 11 years old with mates my own age no adults.
great footage; Godfrey and Hockey back slapping at the end, they must have met head on in the Second City Derby, Villa vs Blues. I'll never ever know why Brian hardly got a game under Tommy Docherty during THAT fateful season 1969/70 when Villa slumped into the old Third Division. Also excluded was Dave Simmons who scored some vital goals to keep us up the previous year. The ''Doc'' screwed up and we went down.
Remember it well - Happy days!
43 years on and the first Penalty shoot out I ever saw has been matched by another great win for Rovers to get back into the league at the first attempt.
A bit before my time, this...never even heard of this competition!
Yea cuz ur from Sheffield everyone from Sheffield is stupid
I worked over the weekends then and couldn't get the two Saturdays off, so I opted for the play-off final against Notts County, the following week ...... I made the wrong choice, what a sickener!
I was at this match as a 9 year old and its the first time I've seen footage. Lived in Reading and M4 was crawling with Gas fans but was supporting Tranmere as my Mum's family are from Birkenhead. Behind the goal it felt like the winning goal was scored about half a mile away, brilliant atmosphere though
Y not Jason walker
OMG. I went to all the matches BRFC Vs TRFC played that season including this match and I'm glad to say its the only one i enjoyed and the only one we won.. For the record, Bristol had a lot more fans there than us, but we out sung them from the start.... SWA...
The thing is, we kept our fans, they didnt.
@Xxstacey09xX - FA Trophy Champions.
What about that Fecking push on Twentyman by Muir... should have been a free kick to the Gas not a goal to those gits1
Tranmere till I die !!!
Look at them nw try though they would get that fr and they now are the fa cup champions xxxx go bluebirds
Fantastic away trip with my dad. Great goal form Ollie!
Lolz! Smiggy! HAHAHA!!!
we have obviosly never been good at pens :(
Sad old Gas, celebrating a two bit cup win. UP THE CITY!
Knobhead
i was there, we wuz robbed :(
It was in Oct 1971 when Malcolm Dalrymple signed for Rovers (I was 11 so cannot even recall him) but he made 8 first team appearances before joining Watford in 1973. We had 2 3-3 draws in 1973 both at home, the first in Feb Oldham and the second was Charlton in April.
Thanks again. Can you tell me who (and when) we played with Malcomn Dalrymple (sp?) in goal around that time? I remember being 3 up at half time and then it ending 3-3.
Yes the Wolves game was next. Thankfully my dad or brother couldn't make that one so I couldn't go either. It was still a bit of a shock though to lose 4-0 after the Man Utd game. I know Utd were on the slide then but I (in my youth) thought we were unbeatable after that, how could Wolves beat us?
Thanks for the infos OldEs! I was at the 2-1 at Old Trafford too! I still have the programm somehwere! Was our awful 4-0 thrashing at Wolves the next cup game? I was also there. I'm getting forgetful in my old age!
It was the Watney Cup and was played between the two top scoring teams from each division that were not promoted.
Dick died in 1998 but I'm not really sure of any details. All I know he was a fabulous keeper for Rovers and a schoolboy hero of mine. As a 12 year old I saw him save a George Best penalty at Old Trafford when Rovers went there and won 2-1 in the old league cup. It was at Eastville in 1973 when he fractured his skull in a collision with Eddie Loyden of Tranmere Rovers.
Alan Warboys was Smash and Bruce Bannister was Grab and together were pretty awesome and had quite a nationwide reputation. I had a very old video tape that I converted to dvd.
Brilliant memories. Thanks! I heard that Dick Sheppard died a while back. Does anyone know what happened? I was at the match where he got his skull fractured in the 70s. Who was that against? Bradford?
Get ready for more of the same.
Great stuff. Beauty of a chip from Ollie.
I was at the match,as a teenager, and remember it well.Stood on North Stand terrace as usual. Now an Ikea store on ground.Current stadium being rebuilt at end of this season, assuming no more problems with Bristol Council.
Up the Gasss premiership in 3 years :D
Our official club nickname is The Pirates but we took on the name Gas in our later years at Eastville. The old stadium stood next two a couple of Gas tanks that regularly let off a waft of Gas which we all could smell. Some say it was a name given to us by Bristol City fans in exchange for the nickname we gave them "The Shit".
Yes mate, there is only one Eastville Stadium that Bristol Rovers played at. Great days...
Just spotted an old mate of mine on here, Mike Norse of Patchway - couldn't miss his big mouth. Brings back great memories - only seems like yesterday!
Fantastic! I WAS THERE! One of the first penalty competitions in England.
Great video and I've rated it as five stars. Please check out mine on 1920's trading cards of early soccer players. It includes players from Sheffield United etc.
All Baldes Aernt We..?
Baldes hahaha...
Ahhh, the memories, a great day.
Brilliant! A month before I was born. Thanks for posting.
Unlucky Gas, dont remember that far back though, i think i'd just turned 1 years old haha.
