    Interesting observations. There must have been something else wrong with the setup you mentioned in the beginning though, where you got no sound out of your passive pickup. Obviously there are instruments with passive pickups built in, and there are aftermarket devices such as those made by KNA that are designed to go direct to amp. As long as it's an amp geared for acoustic instruments, perhaps, due to impedance matching issues, it should work. There is much to be said for sticking to the shortest logical path between the strings and the listener's ears, and there are also fewer opportunities for failure, with fewer devices. Add to that the fact that it's just pretty darned unattractive to have a couple of plastic gizmos cut into the sides of the ukulele, one for the controller and one for the jack (and maybe another for the battery), that's not at all the path that I would want to go. I think that with proper amplification, a purpose-built acoustic instrument amplifier, and a good passive pickup, most people should be able to accomplish their objective.

      @CTrietschUkuleles 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! I definitely agree about keeping the set up as simple as possible and that onboard electronics are unattractive! A good acoustic amp is the way to go, but most of the time when I perform I plug into the venue’s PA system and the simplest way to get that working for me is with a preamp boost. When I plug direct in at recording studios I also use my preamp because I get the same issue.

    I usually strum with my index finger, as you demonstrate. However, for some reason, the nail on my index finger taps against the edge of the fretboard, making an audible tick sound. Any hints as to how to reduce/prevent this?

    • @CTrietschUkuleles
      @CTrietschUkuleles 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks so much for asking! That’s a common issue actually, I’ve seen many high level ukulele players do that here and there during performances and even recordings! I used to hit the fingerboard so much on this ukulele that the edge is rounded now from wear haha. So I think it all comes down to a matter of control which you develop through repitition. With more practice you’ll have that issue less but every now and again I’m sure you’ll still whack your finger like we all do sometimes haha. One other thing to note is that the height of your strings and thickness of your fingerboard make a difference too- I make the fingerboards on the new ukulele I build thinner and it happens a lot less than it used to for me. And if you’re string action is ultra low you’re more likely to hit the fingerboard/body too. All the best and good luck!

    • @MikeWach
      @MikeWach 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@CTrietschUkulelesWow, thanks for the quick reply. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem. I had a feeling you were going to say "practice." Actually I re-watched your video, especially where the camera angle was looking straight up the fretboard. To my eye, it looked like tip of your index finger was moving in a fairly tight arc, so the tip of your finger was approaching the G string from an angle, instead of straight across the strings, which would make contact with the fretboard less likely. I think that your wrist rotation was generating that arc. Of course, that might not help in other strumming contexts, when the hand moves vertically further. Thanks again. Your ukuleles are beautiful. Someday I may be worthy of an instrument of that quality.

    • @CTrietschUkuleles
      @CTrietschUkuleles 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MikeWach you are worthy! I'd be honored to build you an ukulele and thank you for your compliments too. So what you're talking about with the wrist rotating is right on the money, I actually made a whole video on strumming wrist movement that might help you too! th-cam.com/video/KKo0qImhbyQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ytDNnhXj0gHnR25S - I've heard a lot of pro players teach others by saying that you strum straight across the strings but I don't think that's right at all! The finger tip moves in an arc from your wrist rotating like you said, but also your wrist's ulnar/radial deviation and your finger's flexion and extension. It's multiple planes of motion across multiple joints but incorporating all of that gives you better control over your strum speed, control, and accuracy. Something else I just thought of too that might help you is to make sure that your strumming finger isn't too rigid: it should be stiff enough to flex and release each string but also pliable and give way a little as it hits each string. Then for harder strums it can be marginally stiffer and for softer strums a little more relaxed and so on. Happy to discuss these finer points with you, good talk and thanks again for commenting!

    This is a most wonderfully informative video - thank you! I'm partial to a typical rock sound and love your use of distortion (Blues Driver). This was my introduction to a Loop pedal, and it is fascinating!! I have just purchased a Flight Centurion, tenor, solid body, electric ukulele with humbucking pickups. It has no battery-powered preamp. Might you be able to tell me if I would need the EQ effect pedal, to add power please? Or would I be OK plugging straight into distortion, wah-wah and volume pedals as is please? Thank you so much for bringing this to us. You are very clear and concise in your teaching. Best wishes. Thanks so much for your support and kind words! Glad the video is helpful to you - i plan on making more pedal sample videos in the future! So humbuckers are inherently stronger pickups and in addition to that your ukulele has two humbuckers so you probably won’t need a preamp to boost your signal into those other pedals. Have fun! That sounds like a great setup!

    Man I’ve had the worse luck with the TC pedal I have. It’s a reverb pedal, not the one you have, and it just adds so much noise to the chain that I basically can’t use it. Do you ever use flange and chorus at the same time? I have the old fashioned phase and chorus as separate pedals, and never can figure out if I wanna phase my chorus, or chorus my phase.

    • @CTrietschUkuleles
      @CTrietschUkuleles หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh jeez, yea sounds like your reverb pedal is an issue, I’m sorry thats happening to you! So a flange pedal is the combination of chorus and phase already so you generally don’t need to use a chorus pedal at the same time as flange because you can just adjust the chorus knob on the flange pedal. But having a seperate chorus and phase shifter on at the same time gives you the flange effect like you’re saying! The pedal order changes the sound but neither way is “correct” just different flavors - try experimenting both ways with different settings until you can dial in the sound you’re looking for! Best of luck!

The saddle location impacts the bridge location which impacts the soundboard braces’ placement so these measurements need to be taken early and planned for throughout the entire build process! Thanks for asking 😁

    I tried laquer clear coat over super glue and it did not work well at all. I think just a superglue finish would have good sound though as it gets super hard. Was thinking if there was a way to spary it on would be great, but don't know? It does not sand well at all?

    • @CTrietschUkuleles
      @CTrietschUkuleles 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry to hear you are having trouble! Super glue isnt going to get smooth or glossy and you won’t be able to buff it up like you would a finish. I’d also be concerned spraying it with how toxic it is - wouldnt want airborne superglue particles floating around. There are lots of different finishes though if spraying lacquer is giving you a problem, maybe a brush on or wipe on finish that sands well, looks good, and dries hard would be better! Best of luck!

    • @patrickjoseph5028

      Investigate a wet sanding technique…thin your true oil and sand in the wet slurry…when it dries …sand minimally repeat until it looks like an automobile finish.

Actually, I think several of these tips can be helpful even if you don't know how to play yet - especially trusting your first impression on how the ukulele feels in your hands and how it sounds just playing the open strings. Playing all the strings together and one at a time helps too. Best of luck picking out your ukulele!

      Glad it was helpful! The best thing to do when buying online is to compare reviews and listen to different people sampling/reviewing the ukulele. Ukulelesite is a great music store where professional players demo much of their stock for online shoppers, and Gotaukulele is another great source of objective reviews. I do the same with my handmade ukuleles I have available so people can see how they handle, sound, and feel through my sampling of it. Thanks so much!
