Celebrating the Christmas Season with Hungarian Style Part 5 | Episode 78
This is part 5 of the icipici series of Celebrating Christmas with Hungarian Style on the Hungarian Living Podcast.
You might want to start a tradition of having palacsinta on Christmas morning or the day after Christmas or whenever you have special guests visiting from out of town. As far as I am concerned, palacsinta is good for any time!
Palacsinta is the name of a very thin pancake or crepe. It is often rolled up with plum of apricot butter, but you can fill it with whatever sounds delicious to you.
You can set up a palacsinta bar and offer a variety of preserves and let people make their own! Sprinkle them with a little powdered sugar and you are all set.
We have two special sets of preserves from Hungary: One set has plum, apricot, and rosehip preserves and the other has sour cherry, forest berry, and black currant. But, your favorite preserves or ones you have made yourself are amazing, too.
Here is a recipe for palacsinta, but it’s even better if you have a family recipe that has been handed down: hungarianliving.com/palacsinta-hungarian-crepes/
Enjoy the season and enjoy celebrating with Hungarian style! You can order your preserves from Hungary from The Hungarian Store
We’ll have another idea for you in Part 6 of this series, Please recommend our podcast to someone who loves their Hungarian heritage!

I grew up hearing lovely Christmas carols in Hungarian. I am sure hearing the sounds of Hungarian - and repeating them - has helped me in my pronunciation as I have been more intentional about learning Hungarian in the last several years. I am thankful my mom played these songs during the Christmas season every year. Hearing the songs brings back some nice memories. I remember our home being vi...

We are talking about Mikulás on the podcast today! Are you ready for his visit? So, before I get too much flack for today’s topic, I want to explain a little something. A few years ago we hosted a Christmas market tour to Hungary. It was a lot of fun, of course. But what I noticed the most was that the time leading up to Christmas was not commercialized the way we see it in the United States. T...

    I was born in Hungary, but moved to the United States when I was three years old. I still speak Hungarian, but cannot read or write it. From what I understand the letters Q, W, X, and Y aren’t used in the Hungarian language… Is this true?

    • @takacsattila4055
      @takacsattila4055 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      we use them mainly (only?) in words of foreign origin, x is the most common on its own (taxi, lexicon, saxophone), q is always followed by u (q+u), the lonely y uses to stand only at the end of first names instead of i (Ferenczy, Lovassy, Karinthy)

    Very interesting how many words sound very similar to Slavic languages, i.e., Serbian, as well as some words from Austria, like “Semmel” → zsemle. This makes this language easier to learn, at least for me. Thank you for the nice video!

      Many hungarian and slavic words were exchanged during 1100 years of living next to each other, or in cases in the same country. I was surprised how many words are similar to hungarian in serb and croatian. :)

    I grew up in Dearborn in the 1950s-1960s, and even lived in Allen Park for 2-1/2 years 1954-1958, and did not know there were so many Hungarians there! I’m 100% Hungarian from my father’s side-how I would have loved meeting fellow Hungarians and learning about my people and their traditions.

      I think there is a slight difference between singular and double 'r'-s in words. We roll those double 'rr'-s in our words way harder compared to the singular 'r'-s. In my opinion the single 'r' -s in Hungarian is less rolled compared to languages like Polish. But I'm not a language expert, just personal thoughts
