A Celebration Of Northern Authors for Congress 2021 hosted by Richard Van Camp
A Celebration Of Northern Authors for Congress 2021: In this video, we get to hear readings from Tanya Roach, Antoine Mountain, Katłįà Lafferty and Dennis Allen: hosted by Richard Van Camp with introductions by Michael O'Driscoll from the University of Alberta on Treaty 6 Territory. Enjoy!
Tanya Roach is a writer and Inuit throat singer living in
Yellowknife, NT. She has written for literary magazines, judged
the 2018 CBC short story contest and been a cultural advisor
for documentary series on CBC.
Antoine Mountain is Dene, North American First Nations,
originally from Rádeyı̨lı̨kóé (Fort Good Hope) in Canada’s
Northwest Territories. Born to a very artistic family, he grew
up around their crafts - sculpting, beading, sewing and even
quillwork. Later, he forged his own visual practice through
painting, attending art school in Toronto and learning abroad
in Florence, Italy. He is the author of From Bear Rock
Mountain: The Life and times of a Dene Residential School
Survivor.
Dennis Allen is an award-winning filmmaker, accomplished
writer, recording artist, and hopeless story-teller. Winner of
the Alanis Obomsawin Best Documentary Award, The Sally
Manning Award for Creative Non-Fiction, and an
Honorable Mention in American Songwriter competition,
Dennis Allen takes the art of story-telling to another level.
Born and raised in Inuvik NWT, Dennis apprenticed under
his Inuvialuit father and Gwich’in mother. He carries on a
tradition which is steeped in his culture.
Katłįà Lafferty is a trailblazing female northern Dene novelist
who specializes in intellectual property law with a focus on
literary copyright to mitigate ongoing colonial cultural
appropriation and Indigenous victimization in storytelling
narratives. Her memoir Northern Wildflower published in 2018
was the top selling book in the Northwest Territories upon
release and is used as a teaching tool in both secondary and
post-secondary Indigenous studies across Turtle Island. Her
recently released fictional novel Land-Water-Sky/Ndè-Tı-Yat'a

I had been told years ago about the time my grandmother, our ehtsi, stood and told jokes and shared a Tlicho love song with the audience. I looked and looked and, thanks to Frankie Black and his wife, Therese, I was given a DVD with this footage. I immediately called John Gon and asked for permission to upload this incredible treasure to my TH-cam channel. He said yes. I then asked Lese Skidmor...

Our language is still similar after hundreds of years since our ancestors departure to the North and those left behind in the Southwest. We both remain steadfast through colonization and empty contact.

Very interesting find. This is proof we share the same heritage from one common ancient ancestors. Your language has similar body part names as our Diné language.

This is hilarious! I lvoe your stories--we are privaledged to hear your meaningful stories. I love the deep meaning in your stories. I am in the process of writing a research paper on one of your essays titled, "Canada, You’re Like My Favourite One-Day Uncle and I Love You". I am looking froward to writing this paper because I love learning about history and writing about how we can do better as Canadians--to learn and never stop learning. Thank you, Richard Van Camp! **might I please say that I loved the Carrie Underwood in the background.
