The Ombudsman is an independent and autonomous Officer of Parliament responsible for investigating complaints against public authorities.

The Office of the Ombudsman does not form part of the government. Complaints can be submitted by the general public who feel aggrieved and believe they suffered an injustice, hardship or discrimination at the hands of government departments or other public bodies.

As a promoter of good public administration, the Ombudsman can also start an investigation on his own initiative when issues of substantial public interest and importance are concerned.

All investigations conducted by the Ombudsman are confidential, and all the information provided to his Office is used only for investigative purposes. The Office of the Ombudsman charges no fees for its services, and all its investigations focus on fairness.
