      lol don’t get your hopes up toooo high! Telling stories is a little easier than going over a lesson plan so I’ll see about trying to put together a story from the Arctic that could serve as a good segue to a second video on a lesson plan. Mayyyybe I’ll be able to get that story together for the end of the month/beginning of May 🤔

      Thank you! It’s just tough to know how to balance time, and limited views here makes me think my time is better spent elsewhere, unfortunately. Maybe I just need to focus on a style of video that works for me, and then put those out less frequently. Quality not quantity 💯

    The Arctic minimum summer sea ice trend is zero for the past 17 years. In the past few years it was almost as high as 1995. The probability that this could be due to chance has now dropped to 10% (after Swart et al calculations, 2015). If the hiatus continues until 2027, it will become statistically significant (p<0.05, or less than 5%) and no longer explainable by chance. Using National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) information for September minima (million km²): 2007 4.16 2008 4.59 2009 5.12 2010 4.62 2011 4.34 2012 3.39 2013 5.05 2014 5.03 2015 4.43 2016 4.17 2017 4.67 2018 4.66 2019 4.19 2020 3.82 2021 4.77 2022 4.67 2023 4.23 Plot the trend line for this data and it will be flat. ZERO net change in 17 years. The linear trend since 2007 is indistinguishable from zero ( around -0.17% per year ). This hiatus is now 17 years in extent. The probability that this could be due to chance has now dropped to 10% (after Swart et al calculations, 2015). If the pause continues until 2027, it will become statistically significant (p<0.05, or less than 5%) and no longer explainable by chance, or indeed, human-induced global warming. Interestingly, "for December overall, 2023 had the third highest monthly gain in the 45-year record at 2.71 million square kilometers (1.05 square miles)" (NSIDC). In most recent research (Jensen, 2023) "Since 2007 no significant decline has been observed" in Arctic Sea Ice extent. None. The research also states "there is no apparent correlation between the variable extent of the Arctic and Antarctic Sea ice and the gradually increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere". Since 2007 there has been a regime change in Arctic Ice. This was determined by Sumatra et al (2023) observing the thickness and character of ice flow through the Fram Straight.“Here we show that the Arctic sea ice regime shifted in 2007 from thicker and deformed to thinner and more uniform ice cover. Continuous sea ice monitoring in the Fram Strait over the last three decades revealed the shift.”

      Very interesting a lot of great info there! Yeah no matter what winters will tend to be cold and water will freeze, but it may end up being more coverage from first year ice rather than multi year ice, suggest eating that coverage may not change much but the “quality” of that coverage may change. Ice-free summers seem likely happen, but we may just be at a state of equilibrium between the amount of ice that forms each year and just the right amount of melt each year balancing to get the summer extent trend to flatten. Definitely not as simple as just connecting the dots and I do suspect the minimum won’t go to zero as quick as we might suspect. Very ineteresting!!!

      Since I hadn’t been getting many views on them and the channel hasn’t been growing much, I wasn’t planning on putting out much more material, but if there is demand for it I will. Perhaps a monthly livestream would be useful? I have a video that I recorded in January coming out on Dec 31 as a note to myself, and I will respond to that in the new year. Perhaps it’d be good to do that as a livestream, or to take requests for the types of content that I should produce in the new year. If livestreams are helpful and are viewed I should be able to do them periodically. Perhaps setting a schedule would be good 🤔

    If you figure the min last year in Feb with the amount less for the maximum this year, we are looking at and ice free Feb in 2024, I think…

    • @MargoLAB
      @MargoLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt we’ll get an ice free summer next year but could see the minimum being <1 million square km, which would be pretty remarkable. If that is the case and it *does* appear there has been a “regime shift” over the next couple years, I’d guess that ice free summers could be a reality by/before 2030! Pretty crazy to be witnessing this! Glad to be covering it, making the info more accessible and very grateful for the engagement 🙏

  • @cuana2

    If you look closely, it looks already like the ice extent loss is accelerating. Hope not! Thanks for the presentation!

    • @MargoLAB
      @MargoLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      I just checked the Antarctic extent (for Sep 30) and it looks like it has started going up again! If short-lived, beginning the downtrend this early/this low could really trigger a positive feedback loop (the melting snowball effect?)… I am very curious to see if we get surprised with a delayed maximum 🤔 Will be interesting to see the NSIDC’s next analysis report! Thanks for the engagement!!

    So say the climate lunatics. And how are they measuring it, where is the reference 5000 years ago

    • @MargoLAB
      @MargoLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      Measured via satellite! The satellite record began in 1979 so that is as far back as the reference goes for this article. One of the oldest records referenced is actually from 1986, which was the prior lowest maximum - surprised it was more than 30 years ago! Will be interesting to see what it looks like next year 🤔 Thanks for the engagement!

    • @cuana2
      @cuana2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Additionally, ice samples from deep into ice caps and glaciers provide a lot of information regarding past climates.

    • @MargoLAB
      @MargoLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      💯 Ice cores contain very small bubbles that capture ancient atmosphere, so we have been able to measure not only CO2 concentrations going back thousands of years, but also oxygen isotopes, which are a proxy for temperature (and therefore indirectly ice extent). Isotopes are such a fascinating tool for understanding the earth/climate system!!

    How would you summerize ocean ecosystems in a few sentences?

    • @MargoLAB
      @MargoLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      Tbh idk that I could do it in a few sentences, as there are so many that are so varied! I could describe them as dynamic, fluid, impressive… I want to say resilient but they do have their thresholds 🤔 Perhaps I would say ubiquitous? If you take a scoop of seawater in your hand, you are scooping up life! Microscopic organisms are everywhere in the ocean, so in that sense I would say there there are “ecosystems” everywhere in the ocean. Quite a magical place! Hopefully that’s somewhat along the lines of what you were looking for:)

    Thanks a lot for that video. I'm watching these sites almost on a daily basis and it's great that finally someone is talking about it! By the way did you see the heatwave triggered by Hillary hurricane on the Greenland temperature? More than 10 degrees around the entire coast of the island... And also the+14°C average south in the southern ocean (Atlantic part). I understand you are (as a scientist) waiting for 2024 to confirm the trend but I just think we're witnessing a tipping point that no one expects to come before 2050

    • @MargoLAB
      @MargoLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoy! I recently realized that the NSIDC analysis reports are low hanging fruit for me to make their work more accessible, so I’m gonna try and make a new video every time they release one! I had wanted to do some Hillary coverage but was on vacation and didn’t realize it caused a heatwave - I’ll have to do some coverage of global temperatures and heatwaves soon 👍 Tbh, I imagine that we have already crossed a tipping point but due to dealing with processes that occur on a geologic timescale (or at least longer than a human timescale) I suspect we won’t see the climate system’s full response for some time. I’ve come to appreciating that there is some hope, and that we should focus on solutions rather than all of the problems, but time won’t always be on our side... Anyway, it’s a very interesting system and time to be alive! I’m glad you appreciate the content!

    Thanks for this video. Desperately looking for analysis on that subject. I totally agree that an off charts year is not enough to make scientific conclusions but let's agree that quite a lot of 2023 charts are way off expected (SST anomaly, global average temperature and so on)

      Glad you enjoyed! And thanks for the suggestions of other topics to cover! It is easy to jump to conclusions with such an odd year, since the media tends to do that for clicks and/or to fit the narrative, it will be interesting to see how the year unfolds into 2024. I look forward to doing more “current climate events” coverage moving forward :)

    I think you are doing your channel a great disservice by using “shocked face” in thumbnail’s. The thumbnail suggest something low brow, when your channel is the opposite. In any case. I liked and subscribed.

      Thanks for the feedback and subscribe! I’ve been experimenting with that this year and you’re the first person to comment on it. I thought it would help with clicks but always felt it was a little cringe… I’ll probably remove/stop doing if it doesn’t make the channel feel more personable 👍

      @@MargoLAB I understand. I've taken a brief look at your channel and there are many interesting videos that would definitely appeal to a larger international audience. I look forward to watching them all. Just keep on sharing your expertise and people will notice. No need to cater to a specific demographic, people who are interested in science stuff will come regardless of age!

      That is exactly my thought process! Slowly but surely the channel will grow - I just have to keep working on it! Comments like these make it worth it! 😊

    And what percentage difference is it? And this only based on 45 years of data. 2014 was the RECORD winter MAXIMUM Antarctic Sea ice extent

    • @MargoLAB
      @MargoLAB ปีที่แล้ว

      From the sea ice extent graph, currently it’s around 15 million km^2 and the average (expected) is 17.5, so the difference of 2.5 is around 14% less sea ice. Yeah the max in 2014 is surprising, but that is testament to how dynamic the system is. It is possible that 2023 will end up being another max/high year but we’ll have to wait for Oct to see! I am very curious to see what 2024 looks like, and I am compelled by the “triple La Niña” but maybe something else has changed… very interesting!

    Very good video especially the way you narrated through the video and the whole production except for the audio, you might want to upgrade your mic and make sure your recording software is a good one, but other than that the video is amazing and could gain much more views. Best of luck to you!

      Thank you! Yes, I have slowly been making upgrades and the mic is next on the list. I appreciate the feedback as I know sound quality is very important (and apparently lacking). Good to know and glad everything else is enjoyable!
