How I learned Japanese - My 8 year journey
This video was an emotional roller-coaster for me to make with a lot of nostalgia hanging in the air whilst making it. 8 years has it been since I started learning Japanese, never could I have expected myself to be studying something for this long.
I truly am happy with how far I have gotten since I started studying Japanese. But there's still a bit of a journey ahead on me to be completely satisfied with my Japanese. Join me on the journey! ^^

    At 0:15 what is the meaning of じゃ? On the top it says nai form of the verb, but the nai form of suki doesn’t have a じゃ

    • @VoylinSensei
      @VoylinSensei 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Suki is a -na adjective, so you need to add です, which in turn becomes じゃ

    A major flaw of the JLPT in my opinion is that it doesn't test your speaking ability. So, you could be certified at an N1 level for grammar/kanji/vocabulary/listening, but not even able to hold a basic conversation in Japanese! Especially if you're studying Japanese abroad (and self taught), this is an easy trap to fall into if you only focus on passing the JLPT exams.

    • @VoylinSensei
      @VoylinSensei 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yep, that's why I often repeat the phrase "don't focus on the JLPT" even if people want to pass the JLPT, it shouldn't be their main focus if their real goal is to know Japanese.

    May I ask about your Level? Do you remember the content of all of your grammar videos? How many kanjis/words do you know? I started at the beginning of corona and know abourt ~3000 words ~800 kanjis( but not all readings). For me word lists as a video helps to listen to while sport, driving, etc. Your grammar shorts videos are also very helpful to watch while doing something else. When I "learn", I never force myself to memorize, just listen to, like a cassette in the car, and at some point you know every song and which song comes next. It also doesn't feel like work/school/learning. Just do anki instead of smartphone game. So I have no big problems with motivation.

    • @VoylinSensei
      @VoylinSensei หลายเดือนก่อน

      Of course you can ask about my level :p I would be lying if I were to say that I remember all the grammar rules from the top of my head, but when I hear them I do know what they mean, it's just when making my own sentences that I will often rely on the more common and well used grammar rules as using the more difficult ones is something I'm not that proficient with yet. As for the amount of words and kanji's I know ... well I stopped keeping track of them for some years now. I used to be very into "let's study 50 more words today!" and "let's get 20 more kanji in my head!", but that ended up being something I started caring less about when living here and actually using the language daily. My priority has been being able to talk and to have conversations with people, if I were to put a number on it then I probably know all the Jouyou kanji by meaning (not readings) and as for words ... honestly quite a difficult one as many I would recognize and remember when hearing, but if I would have to say the word myself I would probably not come up with it directly ^^" My smartphone screen time each day is less then 30 minutes, no games for me (life is too busy for those things) but studying is something I mainly do with my pc, by conversating with people, and by books. I've been trying to limit my screen time as I found that it distracts me too much from my tasks, life and learning. Happy to hear that the shorts are helpful to you and that motivation isn't a big problem, 頑張ってください!\^o^/

      @@VoylinSensei thank you for your answer. I see. Can you watch anime&dramas, etc and understand it like in english, which is probably not your native language as a Belgian, I guess. I am currently at the level trying to unterstand native content. News are a good source. I recently watched the movie in cinema "the concierge" and stopped reading subtiles. Mostly time is limited for studying with private life, sport and work.

      I can watch anime and drama as well and not struggle doing so. My understanding of Japanese is coming along rather nicely as I don't translate to English anymore in my head, I hear the words and know their meaning without any conversion in my head. My mother tongue is Dutch, but I very easily switch my thinking to Dutch, English and Japanese without any issue. Time is limited but don't rush in learning and enjoy the moment ;)

    I just filed your sheet of inscription with this : After trying many books and apps, I still think we have a world problem in creating a good and natural way to teach languages, especially Japanese. I am French, and I just quit my job as a French literature teacher in middle and high school, a bit like you, but I tried to stop before the burn-out. Anyway, even in France to teach young French people, teachers and programs are BAD! I like grammar, when it is simple and logical (because it is) but I hate when it is taught stupidly like a machine, where we have to learn things by heart. So, I hope you found a way to teach in a good way, if you think you can do it, I will be glad to learn with you ;)

    • @VoylinSensei
      @VoylinSensei หลายเดือนก่อน

      Smart to stop before the burn-out happens, a very smart move as it can linger on for quite some time ^^" I'm still working on a good way to teach, I'll be happy to have feedback and to create a better way for learning languages. I've learned both English and Japanese by myself, English personally wasn't too big of an issue due to it being very similar to Dutch, I can understand French and German because it is similar as well, but Japanese was a whole different fish to get a grip on ^^" After one year of studying Japanese I've been trying to come up with a good game idea to learn Japanese (or any other language) but it's quite difficult, even when I was here in Japan for so many times before moving here, you can't just pick up the language that easily. I do have a game idea which I'd like to work on but time is something which I have a lack of, especially with baby number 2 coming next month :p

      Hello Voylin, Congratulations for your future child ^^ A video game will be nice, but, yes, it needs a lot of good ideas. About that, I am not a developer, but I know my html and css a little, and I started briefly unity few years ago. I wrote quite a lot about a rogue like pixel art game to learn languages in a fantasy world. If you want to exchange about that one day, I will be glad to share these ideas to you if one day maybe it can be materialise in a game :) I am an anthropologist and I like to study ways to teach what is unreachable, like a sensitive alternative medecine or a spiritual body practice. This is my field of expertise : how people get to live a sensitive experience that they can't even imagine before living it. Anyway, beside making a hypothetical game that neither you or me have time to create xD, I will be glad to be taught by you one day, and to give you my feedbacks ;) Have a good day! Nice to talk to you.

    Yeah I agree with all the points you made. It's pretty much just a check in the box for applying to companies to show you understand a certain level of Japanese and it will be tested in the interview anyways. The main thing I hate though is how it takes like 3 months to get the results back and they only offer it once a year in the US and also its $100! But i still reccomend all my foreign bros to just get N2 anyways since it just helps when looking for work. If you don't plan to get N2 then I would suggest getting some certs that japanese companies like 基本情報技術者試験 or Java SE Bronze, but those exams are like N1 level.

    Can anyone comment on whether this list is reflective of the real level of difficulty of the N2 exam? I find a lot of the grammar here to be quite simple, but I am half Japanese, so maybe that's why. I plan to sit the N2 exam this December.

    • @VoylinSensei
      @VoylinSensei 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am the creator of this video and made it together with my wife (who is Japanese). We went through multiple sources (including the official resources) to make this list so it should be pretty accurate. But if anyone has taken the JLPT N2 and found some rules which are missing they are free to let me know so it can be updated. As of now we have yet to receive a comment of content missing. The sentences are made simple so it's easier to get the meaning of the Grammar points, the test itself will probably have more complex sentences but the grammar points should be the same. Good luck with taking the test!

    Hi mate! I understand your point of view and I agree with you. All of those tests are in a monopoly of few institutions which dictate if you are or not a speaker. This is stupid, as any tests for any competences there is. When you know something, especially a language, you know it, and it is easy for anybody to determinate our own level. It is a shame those tests are in the need for certain jobs. But, as you said, nobody really check if you have the level or not, if you are able to communicate. When do you plan another live? I liked speaking with you the other day. Maybe you have a discord? If you don't, I will be glad to invite you on mine (a bit empty one, but its purpose is knowledge sharing)

    It’s complicated, Memrise have said they are trying to implement tools to help with two issues language learners have, keeping up with the speed of native speakers, and confidence in speaking, if you think about it the company gets the blame when people don’t get the result they want. The problem is, I would question the effectiveness of their new system, and it should never have come at the cost of community courses, which cover an astonishing amount of content and are a great help.

    Im confused about the 44 question 1 example it is て form so it should have been 話していたところだよ ? Or im wrong 😂 help

      You are not wrong, but in Japanese people would often omit the い. This is something I should have explained but if there is an い after the て from a te-form, you do not need to pronounce or type it ;)

    I'll be making more reviews in the near future but I will try to keep them a bit shorter and try to aim to be under 15 minutes. I still do recommend this app, but as always test before you pay to see if you like it and be certain to use multiple tools and resources to study Japanese as there is still not a single application which can get you from 0 to ultra fluent.

    One reason I have subscribed for several years to Memrise was (!) the ability to upload my own vocabulary list and use Memrise to study it. Such community courses are now shifted to a separate web platform and will be totally gone by the end of 2024. However, it is a quality product, and I am now interested in utilizing the AI feature.

      if AI is what you want then there are much better apps for that. They did a very minimal job to implement the AI and from the little reading I did I could find some mistakes already. I'm not going to be using Memrise anymore sadly enough

      Will they be removed because I’m making decks and spending hours uploading thousands of vocabulary?

    The current CEO worked for tobacco industry in the past, so be prepared for more BS coming from him. How can anybody with a conscience hire someone who does not have one? I don't get it.

    Can somebody explain the sentence, この猫は誰も欲しがる人がいなかった to me? It looks like everyone wants the cat people there are none. Why are there seemingly two instances of がる and how to both parts of the sentence describe 人? Thanks in advance!
