I decided to let my website lapse and made a slide show of some of the project I have on the site. If you have any questions or comments I'll try to answer them the best I can. This is the first time I placed music in the back ground, not sure if I like it.. Back ground music is from Mixkit.co royalty free stock music

    Oh wow! These are amazing! Do you think they might still whistle if they were let's say 1/3 the size?

    Since I just started turning in December of 22 and don't remember anything from shop class 70 years ago, I have watched 100s of videos on turning. Yours is the first I've seen turning the tenon on the head stock end. Interesting. Also , starting the hollowing with that large of a Forestner bit would bog my lathe to a standstill. I start with a 1/2" or 5/8", then skip every other size until I get to 1 1/2" and up. I am subscribing so I can learn new techniques that might be easier for me. I really like the birds mouth bowl and will be searching my wood pile for a good candidate. Maybe try cedar. Thanks

    • @georgek3101
      @georgek3101 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a piece of metal guitar string. You can also use a piece of thin electrical wire . CAUTION : do not hold the wire in your hand , wrap it around a dowel or stick on each end. look up wire burning or burning lines for wood turning.

    George, when you do a box, most of the time you are doing an end grain cut that I don't think bowl gouges are made for that.

  • @joejarrell2578
    @joejarrell2578 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't get it... you're wearing fingerless gloves because the bark flies off and stings, leaving bruises? Wouldn't it make sense to wear the whole glove in that case?

    • @phillipmedghalchi5378
      @phillipmedghalchi5378 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, because if it gets caught between the tool rest and the object being turned then it will pull on the glove, and pull the whole thing in and I am sure you don't want to see what happens next. I can tell you that you won't be happy going to ER.

    Why does it not whistal while spinning it on the lathe?

    • @dopeymomasboy
      @dopeymomasboy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spinning in wrong direction maybe? Sometimes the holes need to be angled just a little off so the wind wont go in when its going wrong direction?

  • @randallnelson.8294
    @randallnelson.8294 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wouldn't spinning it on the lathe to part it off tell you whether or not it whistles?

    Whistling top, you say make the hole at "A bit of an angle" can you be more procise as I think getting this wrong will mean it will not whistle

    • @georgek3101
      @georgek3101 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick, It's mostly trial and error . I start out at about a 30 degree angle then adjust from there .Don't give up I have a pile of whistling tops that just spin and refuse to whistle

    Nice looking box. Curious as to how well those 16 tpi work on a large box like that. I could not tell if it was end grain or side grain. I have the same threader and like it but will have to add a larger knob like you did.

    • @georgek3101
      @georgek3101 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike, It was a burl and the threads worked fine. You just need to ca glue them to make them hard so they last . I want to get the other threads when I get the extra cash . George

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      George K 10 tpi is a little course looking on small boxes but does well on woods that might not hold a thread as well and larger boxes. I would skip the 20 tpi unless you are threading exotic boxes no larger than 2" in diameter.16 tpi is my favorite size.

  • @MikePeaceWoodturning
    @MikePeaceWoodturning 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the larger wood knob you put on your EZ threader. Great idea as that small knurled knob is hard on your hands. Nice closeup of the cutter.

      I bought them from a guy on one of the woodworking forums. He got them at an estate sale . I've used copper tubing or couplings .
