Flying special operations mc-130's the terrain following radar can be used on auto pilot and fly the plane. They can fly alot lower but ot has to be in a war time or special real world situation.

What's the purpose of this close formation in combat?

Lived in England early 90s, my husband and I were visiting the Lake District. I can’t remember where exactly we were but we were sitting quietly by a wide river when we heard thunder coming our way. Two jets, I could not identify them, swooped down the river. I swear they were not more than 100 feet off the water. That was about three seconds of the most exciting time of my life.

I've flown between Torrejon AB outside of Madrid to and from Mahon Airport in Menorca. I was stationed at the remote comm site in Menorca for almost two years.

A beautiful sight! . . . . 2 minutes . . . STAND UP! . . . .

Looking at the planes flying over the lake, I was kinda expecting to also see some kids on brooms flying around.

Ex RAF here, remember being at Cranwell with the baby pilots and a formation of Hercs joined the circuit, and one of the baby pilots looks up and says to the flight instructor “ah, that’s what formation flying looks like”🤭😅

Both of my parent's families lived close to what is now called "the loop" before coming over to North America circa 1779. Can't see how later generations learned to walk in the 'flatter" lands of western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio.

I grew up within walking distance of the factories where these were constructed. When ever one flew over they had gear down it seemed.

Anybody can fly a plane at 20,000 feet. Military pilots need to train to fly low and in tight places because you never know what you might have to do some day.

I was a loadmaster on C130s and was in the 3rd craft in formation on one mission. It was the roughest ride ever due to the turbulence from the first 2. I can understand why that 4th plane was flying higher than the front 3.
