Home: A Place of Return
After meeting the Christ-child, the magi returned home-but not by the same way. Their route had changed, as had they. As we return from this Advent journey, how might we find ourselves changed?

The Manger: A Place of Care
Our Advent journey concludes at the manger, a surprising place to find the incarnation of God! Yet, the manger teaches us a thing or two about what it means to welcome God in our midst. With the help of the animals, let’s learn!
Bethlehem: A Place of Humility
On the 4th Sunday of Advent, we arrive in Bethlehem, where-aided by some very old biblical history-we learn why Bethlehem was, after all, the best place for God’s love to take human form. It’s a lesson in humility.
Nazareth: A Place of Simplicity (Advent 3)
Nazareth…Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Oh, Jesus was born there! But WHY in Nazareth? Is there something about simple old Nazareth that was essential in forming Jesus? What lessons can we learn from Nazareth?
Jerusalem: A Place of Waiting (Advent 2)
The story of a couple longing for a child…for their whole lives…reminds us that waiting is part of life. When we make peace with this, we discover that the waiting can be as important as the result.
Rome: A Place of Hope (Advent 1)
Welcome to Advent, as we embark upon a journey to Bethlehem-with some stops along the way. First stop, Rome, where we discover that hope can come out of darkness…and journeys can begin in places we’ve never been, perhaps never even considered. This Advent series is based on the book On the Way to Bethlehem by Rob Fuquay, with inspiration from Worship Design Studio.
Out of this World!
It is “Christ the King” Sunday-but given what we know of kings, how are we to understand Christ as “king?” And what about his “kingdom,” which he declared to be “not from here?” It all feels a little out-there…but maybe it’s more down-to-earth than we realized!
The End Is Near!
Just when it seems like everything is falling apart (when does it not feel this way?), we might find comfort in Jesus’ prediction about things that without fall apart in his disciples’ lifetimes. As strange as it seems, there is a great deal of hope in the turbulent 13th chapter of Mark-if we know how to find it!
Do Unto Others: Love
Love your neighbor, Jesus said. How? When we feel such distance between “us” and “them,” what does love even look like? Let’s consider “agape,” the Greek word used in this commandment. Love may be possible, after all-and we certainly need it now, more than ever!
Mixed Emotions
It is All Saints’ Day, when we remember those who have gone before us. So many emotions! We remember that even Jesus wept. There is healing in the act of grieving, and hope…in our God, who will wipe away the tears from every face. Today, light a candle for someone you wish to remember, and hold sacred space for the feelings. Those who mourn will be comforted.
Do Unto Others: Respect
The metaphor of the body (1 Corinthians 12) is used to teach us to respect the different gifts we each have, as members of the human family-but how do we respect those who are exceptionally gifted at getting under our skin? Our clue comes from the Latin root of “respect.” It begins with seeing….
Do Unto Others: Humility
It’s not the virtue that wins you the popularity contest, but humility is something the world needs, now more than ever! Let’s explore the humility required for followers of Christ, from the teaching of Ephesians 4:1-6.
Do Unto Others: Compassion
We were created for compassion-to “feel with” each other. The prophetic vision of a compassionate world is our model, but how on earth do we attain it? Some reflections on compassion, how we cultivate it and why it matters more than ever. From Isaiah 11:6-9.
Do Unto Others: Kindness
First in a series of sermons called “Do Unto Others,” we consider how Jesus’ teaching from Luke 6:31-36 informs our treatment of those with whom we disagree….In such a time as this, we need his message more than ever! (Worship series inspired by Marcia McFee & Worship Design Studio)
First Place
Much of our energy is spent striving to get ahead…so, how are we to understand Jesus’ teaching about coming in first by being last? Some thoughts on Mark 9:33-37.

Dear Nancy, I’m so sorry for your losses, including an anticipated loss. The price of love, right? I’m grateful that anything I could say might have been a little helpful. None of our words can fix the hurt of another, but knowing that we’re not the only ones feeling it-that helps. And remembering that even Jesus wept-that gets me every time. Bless you, Nancy. You and your family will always be incredibly dear to me. ❤

I think m also about to reach my crossroad where I will have to choose to follow God or not. Please pray for me, m really not kidding about my crossroad. Thinking of it also terrifies me sometimes. By the way, the volume is on the lower side even with full volume on my earphone.

What do you say when you hear a message from God’s word well presented? I enjoyed it? Good job? Well, no, you can only thank God for His Word and for faithful messengers and thank the messenger for being faithful. Thank you, Alison.

Excellent and uplifting message, Alison. I was so glad to hear you mention Christ’s resurrection, especially at this time of lent and the expectation of Easter. It’s easy to preach about Jesus’s love but skip over his determination to go to Jerusalem to die, knowing he would rise from the dead, having made it possible for all who want to to come to him in faith to live with him forever. That’s the core truth of the Gospel and the ultimate love of Jesus. Keep sharing the true faith and his love, sister, and I will pray for you. 💕

Yes, Alison, that false and hurtful and quite trite message, often spoken carelessly to those suffering-“oh, everything happens for a reason”-is so pervasive among both those who believe in God and also those who have some kind of “faith” in what can only be described as fate. Among Christians, it’s confused with the promise of God found in Romans 8:28: “All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose,” or, better, I think, “God works for the good of those who love him in all things…”. This scripture is worlds apart from the trite and hollow platitude those in the “world”-and some Christians, unfortunately-use so flippantly.
