Stick Chair Spindle Bushing
มุมมอง 480ปีที่แล้ว
The Stick Chair Bushing is a 5/8" to 1/2" plastic bushing for drilling spindle mortises into the seat using our 1/2" Drill Extension. You place the bushing in the already drilled spindle mortise in the arm bow, and then use the drill extension to drill the spindle mortise in the seat. It has the accuracy needed with just the right amount of "wiggle" room. Go to bbcustomtools.com to order.

    i would have screamed if you had flipped it 90 and done a face flange... started doing that lately on the metal lathe, shallow angle or face tapers. noone seems to use the idea of taper turning attachments at right angles... take it a bit further, add a fixed stop, some links, pivots... you can carve parabolas and other curves with no sweat. and always repeatable.

    • @Kyle.Barton
      @Kyle.Barton ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, and yes I have seen this type of setup (what I call "pattern turning") used for making spheres, long sweeping curves, etc.

    You never seen to use backer pieces when drilling through an arm bow. I find even with a very sharp brad point, the exit can really shred the wood. How are you achieving this? Extremely sharp bit? Drilling speed? Just strong wood that resists tearing out at the exit?

    • @Kyle.Barton
      @Kyle.Barton ปีที่แล้ว

      Our line of Stiletto Drill Bits is the best solution. They greatly reduce tear-out on the backside of the hole.

  • @acanadianwoodworker
    @acanadianwoodworker ปีที่แล้ว

    Ahh, brilliant, you've combined the pointer and tenon fit thing into one reversible piece.

  • @acanadianwoodworker
    @acanadianwoodworker ปีที่แล้ว

    Ive been putting together a cheap and cheerful version of this guide. I have to say - getting all the components to work together with no play is quite difficult. Hats off to you for your mastery of the McMaster catalogue. One of the most critical components is the bushing the extender rod sits in. If either part is .005 off it either doesn't fit, or wiggles - thus defeating the whole purpose. What is it inside - like a nylon or low friction plastic? Yours seems to have a perfect tolerance, it spins easily but is held perfectly in line with the target.

    • @Kyle.Barton
      @Kyle.Barton ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! It’s nothing complicated, just a 1/2 linear shaft and a 1/2 Drill Bushing. Both are hardened steel.

    • @acanadianwoodworker
      @acanadianwoodworker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kyle.Barton Interesting, I always seemed to see some dark plastic type material inside, but I guess the bushing is hardened steel all the way. I'm assuming the stuff at McMaster (I'm also assuming you order from McMaster lol) is perfectly aligned with each other. Like the linear shaft is 0.500 and the bushing has an ID of 0.500, or with just enough play to slide and spin. For instance, I'm just using a cheap aluminum 1/2 rod from Home Depot, which is is like 0.510, and that 1/100th makes a massive difference and seizes the whole operation.

    • @Kyle.Barton
      @Kyle.Barton ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acanadianwoodworker Yes, that is correct. You really have to use a linear or rotary shaft for the tolerances to be acceptable.

  • @acanadianwoodworker
    @acanadianwoodworker ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant work! After researching and struggling to understand all the mirror / laser / etc. techniques, I happened upon a random photo of a wood version of another design like this. After making my own wood version, someone on instagram pointed me towards your work. This is what I was looking for, a very well resolved, robust and thought out jig. I have a really hard time understanding angles - the 'connect the dots' idea behind this made sense to me for the first time. Thanks Kyle!
