Hymn for Easter: Thine Be the Glory
We celebrate with another favourite Easter hymn!
From Hymnary.org: This hymn perfectly displays the glory and brilliance of Christ’s resurrection. The first stanza discusses the power of the resurrection, the second verse tells Christ’s people to shed their doubt now that Christ has conquered the grave, the third verse tells us to quench our fear now that the Prince of peace reigns. The powerful lyrics and the universally-liked tune no doubt led to the hymns’ enormous popularity.

Beautifully performed. Rachel Laurin was an amazing person, full of smiles, empathy and understanding. As the person who commissioned her Sonata No. 1 for Organ and heard her first official performance of it in Halifax, it means a lot to me to see it performed by others. I am sure she would be grateful and humbled by it all. She is deeply missed, but her contributions to music will continue. Thank you for this.

I'm happy Matthew has found ways around his friends' injunction to avoid improvised hymn reharmonizations for Lent :) This set of variations took me on a lovely spiritual and emotional journey. I liked the architecture of the whole improvisation, but also particular moments like the harmonies at 2:23 and 3:57 and the resolution at 4:10. I look forward to seeing what music Matthew produces in the future! Btw, it seems like this may have been recorded close to the console. If you're able to get a device like a Zoom H4n and put it somewhere in the middle of the church, I think you're likely to get better audio results. If money is an object for a recording device, I'd be happy to help contribute to that (you'd have my e-mail on file from the hymn-playing Zoom workshop). Have a good evening!

Thanks for the generous comment, Alessandro! I've been in a bit of trouble the last few weeks - every hymn I've accompanied I've gotten a little carried away and broken my Lenten restrictions. Oopsies! I can guarantee I will again this morning with Hosanna, Loud Hosanna.... I'm glad you enjoyed this! I find this is one of the best hymns for 'harmonic exploration' (I've coined a new phrase!) - you can hear a couple times my exploration doesn't quite reach the right destination :-). Thank you for your really kind offer of contributing to purchasing a Zoom H4n! I actually have access to one at the church. I would be using it but I get in this really spontaneous moods while I'm practicing and just throw my phone on the tripod and start recording. I'll try in the future to get the Zoom mic out before and place it in the aisle. It definitely would show off the more full sound of the instrument. Take care, Alessandro! :-)

That was delightful! Fraser's improvisation showed great musicianship and inventiveness. I was wondering if the bombarde(?) division (top manual) was going to be used and was not disappointed! Many thanks for sharing this special treat for Christmas.

So glad you enjoyed it, Alessandro! Thanks for your kind comment. The 'party-horns' on the bombarde were sounding a little wonky because of fluctuations in temperature this fall/winter, so I had to save them for a brief moment near the end when I was in a good key (where all the notes were tuned right!). Happy New Year!
