Took train from El Paso to LA in the 70s. Hit a pickup truck which held us up few hours (looking for pieces and parts), which put us on a siding waiting for a slow freight going the other way. Got in 12 hours late.

Love these videos. As a former Roadmaster, seems silly to have the setup at 6:57. Years ago they should've kept double track all the way to the split and had a double crossover before the road crossing.

I knew the Texas Eagle did not go from El Paso to Bowie, Texas. The closet that comes is at my hometown Fort Worth Amtrak Station but I went along with it. Bowie is about 69 miles nnw of Fort Worth and no train service. And someone said you must have meant the Sunset limited. And in California it’s called Bowie Flats. Anyway, nice ride no matter where it was going. Back in the 1960s when I was in the Marines I rode the train from san Francisco or Los Angeles to Fort Worth several times. Still a long deserts ride. It doesn’t get green until about 150 miles west of Fort Worth. Then that prairie, my southern prairie, got to be the most beautiful spot on earth.

Check your ticket--this is not the Texas Eagle but the Sunset Limited. There might have been a transfer of cars at San Antonio, but this footage was taken on the Sunset Limited.

Thank you! Very enjoyable. Several times through the years I had ridden Amtrak from North Texas to California and back. This section of the line is always interesting. One time going through here the area was getting a light dusting of snow. Also, I had driven this route as well. Interesting to take the highway via Columbus, NM and Douglas, AZ to see the remains of SP's former EP&SW line (also known as the "South Line"). Some of SP's passenger trains utilized the South Line as opposed to all going via Lordsburg, NM.

The Sunset Route refers to the ex-Southern Pacific line from New Orleans to Los Angeles. At Sierra Blanca it merges with the ex-Texas and Pacific Line from Fort Worth and Dallas.

Having lived in Deming, NM for 15 plus years, I recognized Akela right away. On your right, going west the jagged peak is Cooke's Peak, elevation 8,400 feet. On the left are the Florida Mountains, elevation 7,400 feet.

Oh my God, I always wonder how this Railway line was built. How people live at these heights. ? Oxygen in Air is so low. It can cause difficulty in breathing or life threatening medical problems. Hats off to these people 👏

It's a peculiar looking locomotive. An 0-4-4. It looks like an odd mash-up of tank engine and tender engine, with the bunker and tank at the back but all on one frame.
