If you are a WWII film buff, look for DECISION BEFORE DAWN, after watching this video. This is from the top of page 3 of my book, A BRIDGE TO TIME... WURZBURG, GERMANY, 4,652 miles to the east on the day that I was placed upon my grandparent’s living room chair, 20th Century Fox was filming a war movie. “An astounding story: with all the scope and power and human drama, a life or death mission in settings that can never again be duplicated!” That November morning an establishing shot was being made at the Old Main River Bridge; its center span was demolished five years ago by the retreating German Army. A prefabricated Bailey bridge presently spans the missing section of masonry put there by Combat Engineers of the advancing American Army. (The very bridge featured on the cover of this book; Saint Kilian is the third statue behind the US soldier.) Taking full advantage of the morning light, the boom mounted cameraman starts his shot with a close-up of the larger than life statue of an Irish missionary, Saint Kilian, who helped bring Christianity to this part of Germany. The shot will appear in the final cut of the film. It moves down from the statue’s face toward its sandaled feet panning slowly right while widening to bring a hilltop fortress, Fortress Marienberg, into view while pedestrians and vehicles cross the ancient bridge. (The film would have us believe it is Mannheim.)
