Episode 29 - Maine Department of Transportation Joins The DOT POD
Last month, New York State Department of Transportation's Office of Traffic Safety & Mobility welcomed their counterparts from Maine DOT to learn from each other in through peer exchange experiences.
Josh and Anya welcome back Becky Gibson-Schott, Director of Transportation Systems Management and Operations in the Office of Traffic Safety and Mobility for NYSDOT, and Colby Fortier-Brown, an Assistant State Traffic Engineer for Maine DOT.
They discuss the value of this type of peer exchange and how this kind of knowledge-sharing of innovative ideas and technology plays a huge role in our vast transportation systems throughout the US. They also discuss the some of the exciting things that are being worked on to help shape the future of the transportation field.

The state should reroute I-81 to part of I-481 and I-690 back to I-81.
Only America would think that putting a STOP on a highway on ramp is a good idea. This is why we have the most dangerous roads of any developed country, our lawmakers are complete idiots
Many countries have ramp meters they are used in Europe, Aus and NZ too

That's cool ..but on a hectic road/day, traffic is not clearing and there is oncoming traffic continuously for 3-4 times then blinking yellow turns solid, and then red solid again & again. Then what to do?
I'm not sure I understand how this works. From what I can gather, if the ramp fills up to capacity the light will turn green to prevent traffic from backing up. But what if there's a bunch of traffic coming down the freeway at that particular moment? Are they going to be expected to move over? It seems scary to be trying to get up to highway speed from a standing stop when you've got a semi barreling towards you.
Usually, ramp meters have two lanes. One of the main purposes of ramp meters is to break up multi-car (platoon) intrusions into a highway. (More info cam from Road Guy Rob)
I wonder how many people are going to die in ambulances that are stuck in traffic
I would imagine that if you’re in Cicero, North Syracuse, or Clay, then pray! Not being able to take 81 through the city is going to put so much time on the clock. If it’s winter time, pray that plows actually plowed the city streets!
The Dewitt and Fayetteville exit on 481 already get backed up, I imagine it will only get worse.
