Parallax is also used to measure celestial distances to visible objects. Imagine the Earth at 180-degrees on the other side of its orbit around the Sun (ie measurements taken about 6 months apart) with a telescope. The shift due to the parallax effect is capable of being used to accurately calculate the distance.
Albert...sending you a howdy from the Lone Star State of Texas 🤠
Glad to see you again
That's funny.😂 Rule if thumb.
Hey Albert musst dich unbedingt mal bei so ner Outdoor show bewerben wie z.b. 7 vs. Wild 😜. Gruß Sascha

Good to see you enjoying the great outdoors :)

Albert! I missed your videos. Great to see one popping up again. :)
Awesome
For a minute there, I was questioning my own English. You don't often hear anyone using "multiplicate" in a sentence. It's generally "multiply". Anyway, great explanation & cool video. Nice to see simple things on TH-cam once in a while.
No math but then uses all kinds of it. Love the vid tho bro.
😉💪
All the thumbless people: "motherf....😢"
I bet you don't know but the "rule of thumb" has an interisting origin. In ancient England it was legal for a man to beat his wife with a stick so long as the stick was no thicker than his thumb !!!. Fortunatly the law has been repealed.
Never used rule of thumb, but interesting to find out where the saying came from. I use it measuring steel or anything. Use feet. X1 foot =12 inches. My feet are just over 11" so to measure and a rough measurement boot measurements. Yard is a stride.
No math needed, you only need to know how to multiplicated.
1 meter is 3 feet, not one foot. 20x10=200. 20 meters x 10=600 feet
"... I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking..."
znalazles ich:)
Nie , ale nie Poddaje sie 😁
Too many variables😂
In the desert add 5 miles to what u think it is😂
😁
Of course I’m so bad at guessing distances that there’s no way I would have guessed 20 meters between the thumb and power line
We are all bad in the beginning , try few times and you get better
What a beautiful bench. Where is that?
It’s in Bavaria . Germany
Absolutely great video
Thank you
Great, loved that rule of thumb! And it´s also proverbial in German, we just say "Pi mal Daumen" (Pi times thumb).
Since I have only one good eye, I use a laser range finder for distances up to 1600 yds / 1400+ meters.
I always wanted to have one like this , but there is so many BS out there that it’s hard to find a affordable one . What do you use ? And can you recommend one ?
@@yyyalbert I've been using a Bushnell Kilo 1220 for >3 years. I don't think it's made anymore. It has a range of up to 1600 yards (advertised) 4x20mm optics. Most are around $100-$200. They've come down in price since I bought mine. There are a few for less than $100 on Amazon that carry a 5-star review. Depends upon how much trust you put into the reviews. They are all about the same when you compare by range of target acquisition and optics. Can't compare a 600yd range scope with a 1600 range scope. There's a $500 / 600yd range finder and a $150 / 1000 yd range fineder. So you can't compare based upon prices. My guess is the optics of the $500 one is superior to others. Most are geared toward hunters; some are geared toward golfers. It really doesn't matter what you use it for.
@@yyyalbert My mistake. I have a SIG Kilo 1200 range finder.
what about people with eyes closer together or further apart than average.
If you want to get it exact you have to do a little measuring ( arm length and pupils to eachother ) and then you get the write multiplayer . ( x9,8 or x10,1) But I think x10 is a good Allrounder and easy to multiply so I would go with x10
The "rule of thumb" was/ is (?) a legal term with a very negative story. It was legal to beat your wife with a stick the same circumference of your thumb but no larger. Maybe call it a different moniker?
What do you do if you're blind in your left eye?
There is a link at the end of the Video to a Part 2 . I give there some ideas on how to make it work with only one eye .so maybe check it out .
J'ai un doute car à mon avis il faut aussi prendre en compte la distance du pouce jusqu'à l'arbre.
I dont get it?🤔... 2 meters is just over 6ft... How do you get that from the tree to the road is only 6 ft?🤔... Then you x 10 = 60ft or 20m 🤔... My point is where or how did you arrive at the distance between your thumbs were only 2 meters???🤔
Hey , at the end of the Video is a Link to Part 2 . I explain there everything in more Details .So maybe check it out because I’m bad in explaining with writing
Im still confused
1:57 "No math nedeed"🤣 Great job tho
dont really get how you guess "i think thats 2 meters"
At the end of the Video is a Link to Part2 .I explain there Everything . its easyer for me to say than Write so maybe Check it out
Nice. But...as a knife maker I cringed seeing your Mora stuck in the dirt. Rocks in soil can chip high carbon steel knife tips. The sand also doesn't do the edge any favors. Now go and sin no more :)
Im very sorry for my Bad behavior , i will do better from now on 😁
@@yyyalbert no worries. There is no penalty phase 😀
Looks at object in distance. Yep. Its far away. Easy.
😁
The actual Rule of Thumb goes back to the late 1600s when a man was allowed to discipline his wife or children by thrashing them with a stick so long as the stick was no bigger than his thumb. Thank goodness we took something barbaric and used the same scale to do something positive and creative.
4:55 *I think most people that can guess the approximate distance between the two sighted thumbs without actually walking to the target, can most likely guess the distance between them and the target destination anyway without using this "rule of thumb".* *What I wonder is, if anyone has invented a way to guesstimate the distance between the sighted thumbs in the first place. Assuming the person doesn't have any clue about how high distant objects are. Now THAT would be a game changer!* *Interesting video, thanks*
Now that's pretty cool 😎 👌 👍
Well if an emp knocks out all technology this will be useful lets all hope we never need to use it and lets all hope we keep our thumbs and dont have to use a stick
It only works in metric. In the US liberty system, you would have to convert inches into yards.
yards x10
danke
You Are welcome
Please use this method to measure the distance to the moon and sun !! They are not fat away. then post
Pretty sure that x10 is using math
😁
Why would I want or need to know the distance to an object?
Ahh, ze Germanz. Fingering out ze entire Woarld from ze woodn Sofa...
I don't understand how to find the distance between the target and your thumb. Also, it doesn't work with inches/feet - unless, again, I'm not understanding. Thank you 😊
At the end of the Video is a link to Part 2 . I explain there everything in Details . So maybe Check it out
Crazy... the horizontal distance due to eye shift Will remain unchanged in all situations. And how come that horizontal shift be 2 meter.? I don't think it is the right method. Or am I missing something? 😮🤔
At the end of the Video is a Link to a Part 2 . I explain ther everythinh in Details , so maybe Check it out
Remember to bring your thumb with you wherever you go
Very cool 😎👍 Do us guys a little narrow betwixt the eyes 👁️👁️ need to recalibrate anything?
I think x10 is a good number for evrybody
Sorry, I didn't understand the rule
It is actually very easy , what did. you Not understand ?
