SABLE’S STORY, The ‘Hot Cold’ Horse (14) Groundwork: Introduction To Long-Lining
In this week’s video, Sable and I are expanding on the finer tunes of our interactive vocabulary by adding the long-lines to our groundwork in the round pen. Once our horses are comfortable with responding to our directing their speed and direction via free-lunging, long-lining is a great way to help them increase their strength, balance and joyful movement without having to carry a rider.
For those of you who haven’t watched any of the previous videos about Sable’s story, the term ‘hot-cold’ means that a horse will vacillate between shut-down, slow-resistant and tense, sometimes explosive, run-away types of behaviors.
The following questions will be addressed in this video:
1. Why is it important to use the long-lines on the ground along the same guidance principles as when I ride my horse?
2. How can I invite my horse to stretch forward-downward on the long-lines?
3. What are some low-stress movements I can practice with my horse when first introducing her/him to long-lining?
If you enjoyed this episode, you may also like to watch the previous videos on the ‘Sable’s Story, The Hot-Cold Horse’ playlist at th-cam.com/play/PLtodxVOWhoLNKKSP78akXxiOQUf35in_X.html

“Being a kind rider and trainer, to me, means learning how to ride with reasonable expectations according to where we find ourselves and our horses on our developmental journey. It also means that we need to continue to refine our technical riding skills so we can support our horses with more finely tuned aids as we are moving more joyfully and more in sync with one another.”
Katja applies the concept of a friendly, trust-based, two-way communication system to riding Dressage, work-in-hand as well as groundwork such as halter-work, longeing/lungeing and longlining.
Additionally, Katja, a Martha Beck certified master life coach, works with people who are looking for relief from anxiety, depression and/or other challenges in their lives.

THE SITTING TROT: When, Why And How To Ride The Sitting Trot
มุมมอง 30619 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In this video, Philly and I will demonstrate how you can ease yourself and your horse into a relaxed, ‘bounce-free’ sitting trot. Many riders, even after years of practice, have a hard time with the sitting trot and aren’t sure how to improve on it. As with many things in Dressage, there are many good tips and methods to help you increase your balance and strength in the saddle, but ultimately ...
SABLE’S STORY, The ‘Hot-Cold’ Horse (13) Groundwork: Free-Lungeing To Prepare For Long-Lining
มุมมอง 7614 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video, you will see how Sable and I continue our conversation about peaceful leadership principles during a free-lunging session in the round pen. Free-lunging is a great way to prepare a horse for long-lining as it will teach us how to direct our horses’ speed and direction without any tack or lines on them. This way, our horses will learn to orient their movements according to our bod...

    Oh my goodness, this video came in perfect timing! My pony has decided that he doesn't like to trot anymore and jumps right into a canter and so this was a very helpful video for me. A nice review and lots of nuggets that I will be using. I have been using half halts and keeping a more consistent post and within two weeks we have gotton from troting 2 strides to a whole long side! I found that incredibly useful! It's one thing achieving an effective half-halt on a well schooled horse, but your advice on teaching these aids to a greener horse will be absolutely invaluable to me right now. I really needed to watch someone else, and your simplification of the steps needed have given me so much more confidence. Thank you.. 💚

      Thank you so much for your kind comment! I’m so glad my video is helpful to you! Your explanations are exactly what I didn’t know I needed to truly understand how to be a better partner for my horse. I’m so excited to absorb every single one of your generous sharing of knowledge videos. I’m an older former Saddleseat rider who discovered dressage after meeting my current partner and heart horse of a lifetime, a former Amish carriage horse. Thank you for the very interesting video! This is the first video of this series I have seen, so sorry if this was already addressed previously. But to me it looks like when she is walking away from the camera, the lower parts of her hind legs are kind of twisting/wobbling in all kinds of directions. Would you agree with this or is her movement normal?

    • @katjaelk
      @katjaelk 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your kind comment and great question! Before starting my work with Sable she was vet-checked top to toe for any health issues and nothing came up in regards to her hind legs. That doesn't mean that there couldn't be something that hadn't been found yet but at the time of the video she was cleared for regular Dressage work. There are a number of reasons for this type of movement though and some horses are just moving like that due to their conformation. What an interesting exercise to do 👍, will introduce this in-hand first (above all the leg-yielding part around a circle on the ground), then try to translate it into saddle afterwards. I guess this is an excellent exercise to supple the horse & even collect it a bit (?). Anyway, love hearing about the "lightness of aids", is actually what I'm constantly striving for (an ongoing process I find 😉). Thanks for sharing ❤

      Thank you for your kind feedback, Elizabeth! Great idea to start with the leg-yielding on the ground before trying it under saddle. And you're so right, all of this is in service of creating a more balanced, supple horse and therefore a lighter feel for the rider as well. So nice to see that these things came across. Thank you so much for your kind comment, Connie! I'm so glad you and your horse are making good use of this exercise. And yes, in principle the same weight aids (sitting a bit more on your outside seat bone), leg aids (inside leg is predominately driving) and rein aids (inside leg against outside rein feel) work for this exercise in the trot. My next/upcoming video will show this in the context of trot-canter transitions which I think you'll find helpful. :)

    Have finally found the time to catch up a bit on the videos you've posted lately (there are still some new ones to watch 🤓). What I especially liked is how you introduce the canter on a smaller circle, then letting Sable out on a larger one once she's in canter. Of course I liked your "pass auf" ❤ & the way you ask her to stretch & lower her head - I noticed you do so by lowering your hand holding the lunge line & bringing it closer to your thigh/knee .... 🤔 . I often struggle with "counter bend" (Aussenstellung) when lunging & find it helps the horse to bend correctly by giving gentle impulses to the inside by lowering my hand. I assume you know Babette Teschen - in her lunging courses she speaks of imagining the horse is walking on a wall & as a handler, you don't want to pull them off that wall by "harsh" interventions (i.e. pulling to the inside). I find correct lunging is an art of its own - thank you for sharing ❤

    • @katjaelk
      @katjaelk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for your kind comment, Elizabeth! And thank you for verbalizing what you're noticing in such detail. It helps me in turn to know what I'm doing and how to communicate it when I teach. Great mental picture of the horse balancing on a wall, very nice. And I agree, lungeing is a skill and a conscious application of tactile and energetic exchanges between horse and handler that grows with practice, patience and openness to learn new things. So fascinating! :)

    This is spot on what I need to do regularly for some time with the horse that I ride. He's a 9 year old show jumper and I do dressage work on him a couple of times per week or more. Being on the bit is more the result of the work for us than the purpose, which is engaging his hind end and make him want to lift his back. But this exercis will suit us perfectly, thank you!

      Thank you so much for your comment! I love to hear that you're incorporating regular Dressage work with your jumper. And so happy you find this exercise helpful. It's one of my favorites and also really useful for walk-canter departs. :)

    I'm not sure if I would be able to tell when he releases the jaw... Are you seeing him chew or is it a feel on the hand?

    • @katjaelk
      @katjaelk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since you are flexing your horse's head slightly inward when you're holding the inside rein you should definitely watch and see when your horse releases his jaw so you can immediately give forward with both hands right afterward. Later when you and your horse are able to use this technique in a more finely tuned manner you may be able to feel the 'chew' but it's always ok to look and make sure your horse will really release in order to get the benefit of this movement.

    This was wonderful to watch and so helpful. The pole idea is great, and I'm glad to have some perspective on my horse's behavior on the lunge: bucking and squealing, but offering everything promptly and correctly... You have helped me think about that fine line!

      Thank you so much, Milka! I'm so happy the slow and steady work we do resonates with you! It's so much fun and so much better than trying to rush things. And Sable is such a good example for the happy vibes we can enjoy with our horses. :)

    Are these the same aids when you trot?

    • @katjaelk
      @katjaelk 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Connie! Yes, in principle they are the same, but riding the movements in the two-beat of the trot is slightly different. You may find this video helpful: th-cam.com/video/RuNTekZJiu8/w-d-xo.html. :)

    Thanks so much! I’m starting a 4 year old QH she likes to GO and I’m developing strong muscles I feel, trying to keep her from going fast. She is getting a little better however is there something else I can do to explain to her. I don’t want her to develop a hard mouth

      You're welcome, and thank you for watching and your question! I'd say start by focussing on riding your youngster more from the seat than with your hands. There are a number of videos that may give you some ideas on how to approach this goal. First have a look at the other videos in this series (and there will be more to come): Inviting My Horse To Be ON THE BIT (1) ‘The Circle Of Aids’ & Riding In ‘Shoulder-To-Shoulder Mode’ - th-cam.com/video/OlR7tP29Bn8/w-d-xo.html Inviting My Horse To Be ON THE BIT (2) Understanding And Building A Vocabulary With My Horse - th-cam.com/video/x_EaRcTcfCw/w-d-xo.html Inviting My Horse To Be ON THE BIT (3) Introducing Counter Flexion On Curved Lines In The Walk - th-cam.com/video/_u__gf8n3l4/w-d-xo.html Inviting My Horse To Be ON THE BIT (4) Walk-Trot Transitions On Curved Lines - th-cam.com/video/VlCXF6eERcU/w-d-xo.html Inviting My Horse To Be ON THE BIT (5) Walk-Trot Transitions On Straight Lines - th-cam.com/video/dJ_KAd1zHRI/w-d-xo.html And also, have a look at the ones in my playlists called 'Exercises For 'Hot, Run-Away Horses,' 'Dressage Seat & Aids' and 'Dressage Basics.' I love that you're so thoughtful in your approach with your mare. Let me know how it goes! :)

    Looking forward to your future videos showing the next stages of what you call the red thread 🤓, really like you emphasizing the importance of establishing solid "building blocks" for later work under saddle. Asking the hindlegs to move forward by using the touchier whip reminds me of teaching the very first steps of piaffe (?), would be great if we could accompany you & Sable on your journey "up the levels". I'm a huge fan of your in-hand work - so valuable for the training of our beloved companions. Thank you so much for sharing ❤. Ps: I assume you showed the first steps of Übertreten (what's it called in English? Stepping over/under 🤔😉).

    • @katjaelk
      @katjaelk 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much, Elizabeth! Always such a pleasure to read your thoughtful comments! Yes, most people know that the building blocks for harmonious riding start on the ground, but few seem to have the time, patience or insight to follow that idea. I'm just offering glimpses. And I don't know that there is a proper term in the English language for 'übertreten lassen.' Maybe someone reading this can help? I think I refer to it as 'letting the horse's hindlegs cross.' Thank you again! :)
