The flag of the United States, commonly known as the Stars and Stripes, consists of 13 horizontal stripes of red and white and a blue rectangle in the canton (the upper left corner) with 50 white stars. The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Britain, while the 50 stars symbolize the 50 states of the union. The red stripes stand for valor and bravery, the white stripes for purity and innocence, and the blue rectangle represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
