@StevenCusic 😂
The arcade game from 1988 is pretty nice, and it looks like it would have come straight out of the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) with those graphics and sounds.
Yes a Mega Drive port probably would have been very nice if the timings had matched up. It would have sold a ton of units as well, seeing as the arcade & home computer ports were so popular.
Ocean got the license early before the movie was a hit, Data East then came to them about leasing the rights to the Arcades to them and the two decided to loosely collaborate with each other (apparently they had a good working relationship previously). Ocean's programmers were shown early unfinished versions of the arcade game while it was being made and they worked on the 8-bit micro versions simultaneously, the arcade machine and 8-bit home computer games were released at about the same time, I think around late November 1988. The version that sold really well in the UK was the ZX Spectrum version, the Amstrad version was also quite popular for that system. The C64 version is an unfinished mess, funnily enough the developers notoriously set the time limit for one stage too low for it to be completed in time, just so they could hide the fact that the later levels of the game did not exist as they hadn't gotten around to programming them yet at the time of release!
Fascinating information, thanks for sharing that, the time lonesome seemed so odd and I couldn't make sense of it at all with the sparse information that I found. The c64 circumstance was out right naughty! Video games back then was like the wild west at times 😂
Okay so heres the issue with the sound theres 2 audio chips the one in the og megadrive the YM2612, and the one in the mega drive model 2 the YM3438 version va3 being the best cause ot has stereo which released in april 1993. its the same fm chip in the shadow dancer arcade bassically a ym2612 with better filters and tech which makes it sound less twangy, deeper bass and much cleaner PCM (which is actually pcm converted into FM using a special dac to make it sound like true samples) . So gunstar hereos that was released in september 1993 was developed around the YM3438 and thats why if you use certain emulators pc/console its gonna sound twangy/earpiercing aka not right because its emulating the ym2612 they should give people a choice. A good comparison of the audio would be by searching * vgmrips thunder force AC * which uses YM3438 and * Vgmrips thunder force 3 * ym2612 same composition different chips.
Nice 👍🏽, thanks for the explanation and I do remember the difference in sound with certain games on the two different hardware models. I had the first release in the UK (1990 I believe it's been so long ) then my cousin had the revised mark 2, I think it was Altered Beast & or Thunder force 3 which sounded quite different to my ears at the time. It was so long ago that I can't remember if the difference was huge or not but I do remember noting that I preferred the mark1 sound as it tended to sound "crisper" on the older titles pre mark 2. I will assume Chakan the forever man & Greendog: the beached Surfer dude audio sounded that way because it was designed around the mark 2? Anyway thanks for watching the video, I looked at the pictures you posted 👍🏽
Those were both released in 1992 and used the GEMS sound engine that *most* American companies used. it's bassically a bunch of standard sounds with little to no effects I call it 'good enough machine sounds' lol. That's also why games using gems sound the same on the brightside for the companies it saves alot of memory. Also It was probably pretty difficult for alot of Americans to do the sound cause unlike Europeans and japanese we didn't have of systems or computers like Europe and Japan which had with specialized chips (I didn't know anyone with an amiga or atari St/ or a nec pc 88/98. Everyone either had apples and macs (mostly schools), c64 or dos) so it's a lack of skill set and equipment + lazy/cost effective. If your curious about the sound engines if you search ' Mega Drive/Genesis Sound Drivers ' it will list all the games and what sound engines they use.
@StevenCusic cheers I will do, I seems so strange to think that you guys didn't really have Amigas or Atari STs
@Unikronn yea man, most of the people that uses them were proffesionals for audio and video. it's wild how music evolved in different places and somehow amalgamated due to people going back in forth between them. Like for instance over here like yawl we had house music and hip hop which evolved into bass music than added breaks which evolved into baltimore club music it's a 8:4 so its like 2 beats + bump i called it the double stuffed cookie(if you have the time look up a documentary on big/miss Tony) Whereas yawl evolved into drum and bass/ jungle. Eventually everyone started spinning both with hip hop lol maybe even throw in some punk or metal everyonce in a while. I used to love getting vhs turntablist videos from bmore, Chicago, LA, Detroit NY the Uk etc and tournaments seeing the different styles. A little bit off topic but I remember being at one party and my brother got to dance with DJ rap
@StevenCusic and here's thinking drum n bass and Jungle music wasn't just a European thing, I just thought it was part of certain north American club scenes. Off topic but that's the main reason why I like the wipeout series because of their sound tracks
I haven’t thought about Chakan the Forever Man in a hot minute! Out of curiosity, I did a random Google dive on it to see if there’s a modern scene around it. The only thing of interest I found is, allegedly, Chakan had a scrapped sequel that is believed to have been reworked into Blood Omen 2. I found an interview with Steve Ross, the artist for both games, whom stated that he was in a state of crunch and didn’t even realize he included elements from one project in the other. So, even that turned out to be uninteresting! lol!
Wow, I never knew that, Chakan the forever man is a game that tormented me, I dislike it's playability with a passion. It's so unforgiving, some of the music is odd too. Even my brother couldn't beat it and he beat almost everything on the Sega Mega Drive that he played (normally on the hardest level). For me I didn't think the game was good enough or horrendous enough to be a cult game let alone have a scene. I really don't like to speak ill of video games but that one in particular haunted me with it's enemy layout and platform sections. Oh & before I forget the odd power up things that you had to put into those yellow slots to see what random stuff you created! 😫😠😩... Thanks for watching the video.
MS XX is a slog in certain places, the colors drab, and it isn’t as bombastic as the classic games. The pre-rendered style backgrounds started in MS 6 and I didn’t like it there either. That art book is dope! Also, I like the Ikari Warriors being included but why no Shock Troopers? Southern Cross and Big Mama need a revival!
Yep Shock Troopers should have been included as well, the later MS seem to have lost their soul compared to the first 4 games (MS 1,2,X,3). It saddened me to see the Playmore efforts compared to the OG SNK versions.
Playing it on a Mister FPGA on a production CRT monitor is as close to the original you will ever get.
Nice 👍🏽

@@PixelsNcreatureSthat's odd? Is the PCB somehow hard coded to not display above a certain display size? Actually that doesn't even make sense now that I've read it back to myself 😓. Is this an issue with your one or do you know if it is aimed sort of quirk with their boards?
The Arcade game was a masterpiece and a hit at the time.
Yes it was a big hit, I can't think of a licensed game that was this popular in 1988. Its visuals & audio are this impressive to this day...but the gameplay is it's weak point imo so for me I can't call it a masterpiece. I can call it a flawed masterpiece though.
Robocop 2 with 2 player co-op is twice the fun.
@adamkane7513 I remember having more time with RoboCop 2 and liking it but unfortunately I never got to play it co-op on the arcade 😫
In the NES port, I mentally swap Robocop with Mr. X, Detroit with Raccoon City and the dogs and punks with cerberus and crimson heads. The gameplay still sucks, but it’s somewhat more interesting at least. Also, as far as the Rolling Thunder branch of run & gun games go, Huntdown is probably the best game out now. Not of all run and gun games, but of that slower gameplay loop.
I played Huntdown quite a bit when it was released but unfortunately I couldn't complete it. I remember being stuck on a particular boss fight but not exactly which one 🤔 As for Nes RoboCop that sounds like some DLC neuro implants to make it actually appealing 😂. You may have given Capcom some ideas. I generally prefer slower run and gun games, it seems like the most popular type are the contra clones these days so I don't play too many as I just get frustrated. My brain just can't seem to keep up with the 100s of bullets coming from all over the place 🤷🏽♂️. Once again thanks for watching the video, it's very much appreciated & I hope it was entertaining.
That diagonal shooting ruined it for me. I think the arcade was actually a port of the home versions.
The home versions were first? Could very well be, I was surprised to read that it (arcade) launched in February 1988. I saw it a bit later in late 88 or 89🤔. The diagonal shooting wasn't an issue for me while I was playing it for the video but I was using my preferred controller, if I had been using some random black crappy (most of the arcade sticks back then were generally awful) arcade stick I probably would agree with you. Thanks for watching the video & leaving a comment 👍🏽
It's confusing because the only date on the NES game is the on box which says 1987. Which is the "RoboCop" licence date. But the game actually came out in 1989. Intro and ending doesn't show any copyright dates, it's very strange
Perhaps when the nes deal was made it was in 87 but they sat on the licence until they realised that the other games were a hit and quickly popped out the Nes version? Who knows, you're right though it's all rather strange with the dates or at least the registered dates we have access to 🤷🏽♂️
@@Unikronnit's goofy because EVERY game based on the first movie says "1988" but I know the Gameboy version was 1990. I couldn't have come out a year before the GB existed 😂
@@PixelsNcreatureS 😂 RoboCop games did a Terminator and went back in time and changed the trajectory of the video game industry as we know it😱...but they didn't clean up their mess lol.

This game always messes up my nostalgia, i always confuse this with similar playing game i can't remember the name of with a girl in a dress getting kidnapped and thrown in a van, the the main protagonists having same color scheme expect both look more like the Che Guevara clone enemies, and i for some reason remember a mounting weapon haha. i only saw this once back in the late 80's in some Pizza shop in east side B-more. also i wonder if the enemy in the mask inspired point break movie. and the audio yea.... another case of Ram being expensive in the 80's if you look up ' Power Instinct Matrimelee - Kanji Kokuin (Neo Geo AES) 新豪血寺一族 闘婚 -Matrimelee- 弧空院 千滋 ' and listen and pay attention to the background you can hear that the ADPCM-B channel on the YM2610 can do audio like a low Bi-rate MP3
🤔 a girl getting kidnapped and thrown into a van.... unfortunately I don't know it. The only ones I can think of are brawlers like Double Dragon & Final Fight 🤷🏽♂️

Its kind of crazy they gave us emulated genesis games on the ps2/psp but ports of neo geo games and snes etc. Even emulation on the pc at that time wasnt 100%. Those were some interesting points you made. And. I had almost same tv specs back in the states it was meant for the xbox series x. Vrr atmos ready, 120hz micro led, 65 inches newest hdmi ports mf was BAD! SO yea i can explain to you what's happening 2 things when you played on psp the input are connected down to the metal. Ps4 had a jenki old usb and wireless format and no vrr. The genesis runs at 59.922742 hz so your ps5 can run at that refresh rate with vrr and also the ps5 was a much faster usb and wireless reciever that really kills the lag
Thank you Steve, I was so confused as to what happened to my input lag situation. That makes sense to me 👍🏼. Yeah I had a crazy journey trying to get "that perfect NTSC shadow dancer experience" 😂 but I now have it even though Sega didn't really help me 👎🏼. Thanks for watching my video, imma pin your response as it literally answers my question in the video 😬
Hunting down the perfect version of Shadow Dancer... Now that's dedication to the cause, I love it! It's such a great game and you're right, Sega don't treat it with enough respect. My first time playing Shadow Dancer was on an imported Jap Mega Drive, which I'd rented the whole system from a video rental shop for a weekend and it totally blew me away. Like you, it's in my top 3 games for the system. Oh and I won't talk about romhacks, because that'd be naughty 😜Quality video as per usual, cheers mate!
Trust me it has been a struggle to find Shadow Dancer and it plays correctly 😫. The years Sega treated this game with contempt and disdain but I persevered and now I have a couple versions which all play well..... finally 😂🤞🏼. Thanks for watching the video, much appreciated 👍🏼
Thank you for breaking down each version.
My pleasure, thank you for watching my video, hopefully you found it enjoyable
The game has just got a big patch that made the vine sections easier. It also made the game save per lvl in adventure mode (the first). If you're struggling or can't beat entire worlds in one sitting, it's recommended to play in adventure mode first. Then you can use that save file to practice for the higher difficulties. The coop is part of the chaos lol. Kritias is actually the strongest character, he just needs more time and practice to figure out than others. If you dislike getting knocked into pits, play Sais, she now takes 60% less knockback from each damaging hit suffered. Check their patch notes for more. See you at the true ending! Lol, it's tough but satisfying to get. I hope I could help. I beat the game in any way you could think of, one of my faves this year.
Well Damn! That's a big patch. I think my save game issue was probably a bug and not representative of the game for everyone but I didn't know anyone else who owned the game to ask. Thank you for letting me know. I will pin your comment so that people can see the update 👍🏽.
I feel rope sections are to 2D games what sewer sections are to 3D games. Straight up slogs!
OMG! Yes that's an excellent analogy. Rope sections just didn't need to be brought back. I'm surprised they didn't have the "slippery ice platform" stages 🫣
@@Unikronn Yeah! lol!
😂
You're right, I think it'd be absolute chaos with 4 players... And there's nothing worse than losing progress with a save file error. I'd be proper upset about that, on any game.
Yep, very frustrating & basically put my total experience on hold because I just don't want to play it anymore after that happened. I hope it's a bug and not how the "save" system actually works as intended
Rastan!!! This game is okay, I need to play it some more. The levels feel too long at times.
Perhaps some big mid level set pieces would have helped? It does feel like it's missing something though, or maybe trim the levels down a smidge.

@@Unikronn waaaaaw thnks for honest answer you just told me my sony pulse 3D audio headphones 🎧 i bought 2020 1st edition is better 👍🏻 i over used it nd still good as new nothing wore out at all not even the colors or leather’s quality literally as perfect as i bought it i’ll keep using it then coz after 4 5 or 6 hours if its really bothering me i use my AirPods or take lil break if i can then all ok 👌🏻 thanks bro i guess im not changing at all 👍🏻
@@SUPERMAN.1985 the H7s are extremely comfortable and I treated them very carefully because they cost quite a bit of money at the time in the UK but just after a year they just quit on me, totally fell apart 😫. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful
@@Unikronn your answers helped me a lot sir you just told me keep using nd taking care of my pulse 3D nd don’t buy H7 👍🏻 your answer helped
@@SUPERMAN.1985 👍🏽
Yeah, Desk is crazy! I love his videos!
Yep, that bastard kicked my arse...I'll upload the video one of these days.
I did a clear of the first one about a month ago. The controls and some of the hit detection was straight jankyard trash, but it had a lot of neat ideas. I wish they would have continued that format in the sequels since they play significantly better though!
I played the third one the other day (probably a month or two ago realistically) it was pretty cool till about half way through then it got very odd with enemies (especially the bosses) with weird hit boxes and almost unavoidable attacks. I did manage to beat it but I won't be bothered with part one or two, the zero looks like that's where the franchise peaked. I'd like to see a modern retro take on the franchise today as I reckon it would be pretty good with a decent budget and competent dev team.
Double Dragon and Streets of Rage were more my thing, so I didn't really play much of Golden Axe past the first few levels, but I can totally understand why you've got so much love for it my man. Great video, really enjoyed the personal connection. And you're right, that PC-Engine port is hilariously bad!
Yeah, Golden Axe was one of my original big 2 along with double dragon in my early days of the arcade. Obviously because the Mega Drive was so good, SoR 1&2 became the new standard for brawlers in the home space (truth be told it was better than most Capcom & Konami arcade brawlers too). As a hack n clash Golden Axe is a great co-op game on the arcade & Mega Drive which is a bit shallow by today's standards but still very enjoyable. The 8bit versions are so disappointing...damn they suck. Thanks for watching the video 👍🏽
the cross d pad is the best in my opinion i miss inputs more with the other two
I was the opposite, I found the circular option easier for me 😅
Always like these oddball title, played this 2p and it was enjoyable experience. the other 3 for the pce games are like totally different games
That's the thing I miss out on now, that 2 player experience because of ..."life". I have to say that I really enjoyed this game though 😀
@@Unikronn I feel you. I’m in my 40’s and have one friend that we still attempt to have retro game nights. We’re doing good to meet up six or seven times in a year.
@@pinkphilmingo6032 that's really good, I wish that I could currently do that, I'll have to pester some of my old school gaming cousins to see if I can get some co-op sessions in next year 🤷🏽♂️, We'll see I guess.
This game is way too fast to be enjoyable. Moreover, the AI is sadistic and pure evil. Only avtistic masochists find pleasure in Super Street Fighter II Turbo.
😂🤣😂 exactly, SSF2T isn't what I'd call fun at all. It's a huge skip/pass for me. I didn't mind watching experts play it back in the day though.
I learned a lot about og street fighter 2 watching this and with that gba version i feel you on that 💯 my favorite port of street fighter alpha 2 is the snes version maybe its cause it was the last version to be made so the game plays solid but with emulators having an overclock feature its even better. And yea the Cps2 uses 16 channels of 8-bit ADPCM (if you hear an album like ioknow mike jacksons thriller that and anything above is PCM but those are usaully recorded in 16-24-32-bit format) so adpcm is something like that but games can use it to call on a recording as needed and the higher the bit depth the cleaner and louder the sound. 8 bit was very quite and needed an amp and lofi and hi fi filters. So for instance like channel 1 will be for bass recordings, channel2 for a guitar, channel 3 for pianos ect. Its works like midi but the samples are complete its actually more like tracker music used to make jungle and amiga stuff. Qsound is just the left and right speakers turning on and of at different speeds to give the illusion of surround sound. So the cps1 using FM was already at 16 bit so the sound was already at top quality but it used a 4-bit adpcm for drums and sound effects. Which is why they sound super crunchy
Ah okay thank you for breaking down the sound of cps2 & cps1 so that it's easily understandable especially with the examples you referenced. It's crazy how much "audio" can make or break a game, even if that last statement is too extreme "sound" can raise a game or at least make it mediocre to the player/gamer. Gameplay as always is king and tweaks to said gameplay systems can also make the experience far more enjoyable if done correctly but as we can both attest it can have a negative impact if implemented poorly. As always thank you for watching my video & blessing us with your audio wisdom 🫡
for the snes it would have been nice to see semi-transparent shadows and life bars.
that scanline filter on this footage looks perfect. When SFII came out, the graphics where mind blowing. The Characters where so huge and detailed and the parallax really gave such a feeling of depth.
Looks like I'm gonna have to try that gameboy advance version then! Great vid my man, appreciate your thoughts.
No problem 👍🏽, yes that GBA version is a treat to play & just an all around fun SSF2T game to play. It's got some cool modes and unique tweaks as well. The music is probably its weakest part but overall I think it's great. Thanks for watching the video.
After SF2 TWW, Konami practically swallowed it's own tail with the next few instalments of the game. I think by the end there was a serious amount of SF fatigue, then they released Alpha which then went on to divide the community. Personally, my fav has always been SF1 and 2 (TWW). SF 1 just for the memories (probably the first fighting arcade I ever saw!) and SF2 TWW for, well, I think we know what it did for the genre at the time! I know SF2 TWW is imbalanced, particularly in terms of the damage, but still at the time when arcades were packed with kids playing it no one complained. Anyway, thanks for uploading!
I agree, everyone these days is worried about balance, updates, FGC (fighting game community), season passes etc which all can be a good thing but for me it's ruined what I loved about fighting games. The arcades felt pure, you against the CPU or the guy beside you. The sf2 series at its peak (probably champion edition?) in the UK was fabulous and I'm just glad I was there for it. You're also correct that it literally ate its own tale but it did like the spin offs (some of them), thank you for watching the video 👍🏽
@@Unikronn Yes bud I think Champion Edition was probably the pinnacle (in terms of building the franchise), after that it got silly. I remember with SF2 TWW it was always versus, the arcade I played at was just filled with kids constantly challenging one another and a case of winner stays on. There was always the best players in the arcade or the 'pro' friend who was called on to beat some other 'pro'. I had the privilege of being one of those pros and so was called upon to beat various people over and over on behalf of my friends which meant I could spend all day playing in the arcade and not have spent a penny (cost 10p a game back then!). Great memories - my fav character was Ken, Guile wasn't really on my radar at that point but oh boy when he did appear, well, let's just say I nearly got into a few fights over how well I could play with him, beating other pro's who were also ring leaders in small gangs was risky business. I remember one time being challenged to play some gang leader bully-type kid who was apparently the best in area (well, the nearby housing estate anyway) and when we met to play at least 5 of his mates rat mates where hanging off the side of the machine and every now and again would, when it was clear I was getting the upper hand, start slapping my buttons and grabbing at the stick in order to put me off. When I eventually came through and won thought I was in for an actual hiding because that's where it looked like it was heading as his mates started pushing about after I wo but the big leader guy quickly stepped in and told his rat mates to back off and shook my hand and then I went on my way. A proper karate kid moment. What a game, what a time!
@EvilestGem damn! Playing street fighter 2 sounded dangerous in your area😨. Thankfully it wasn't nowhere near as bad for me. I do remember having a ton of close matches with sweaty palms & brows, I'll go into more detail in a future video. It's great to hear about yours & other people's arcade cab stories with similarities plus the differences, tbh this is why I started doing these videos on TH-cam, getting to have interactions with people while sharing our "war" stories 😁
I saw the original cab in a 7-11 up the street when it was fresh and remember using dhalsim but i just figured i hit people across the stage 😂. To this day zangiefs atomic buster is the only move that makes me feel the pain in the soul cause aint no one wants to get giefed. In Bmore ,When CE came out in arcades it was a toss up between this and art of fighting, at home most people owned sf2 on the snes, and if you had a genesis u got mortal kombat, honestly dont remember any genesis owner with sf2. Talking about the presentation think after alot of people stopped going to stage plays with real back drops it hurt alot of people's depth perspective looking at flat screens in our case tubes at home, so i always loved the CPS1 level design because tokura fujiwara of ghouls and ghosts always saw the paralax like they were one of the stage plays and passed on that insite to cps1 teams and even the ground seems to change depth in SF its really wild he even mentions it in an interview after releasing ghosts and goblins resurrection. I never seen that again in a game, alpha, SF3, vs series its all so flat. In sf2 cps1 the parralax popped. Also the sound composer Yoko Shimomura knew how to get the most out of the cps1 her best work is on varth imo
Yes sf2 & CE has excellent Parallax scrolling and if I'm being honest it was crazy how good it looked in 1992. The sound of cps1 sf2 is far better than cps2 ssf2 games imo, "Q sound" didn't do it for me when it came to ssf2 but I really liked it in alpha 2 and love it the musical scores in all of the Darkstalkers games. Thanks for watching the video 👍🏽
Noice! Hyper Fighting Ken is my favorite too! I prefer how air tatsu goes straight like a helicopter. It doubles as a sort of air dash!
Exactly, it looked (and still does) so cool and is literally my first experience using a sort of air dash. Tbh Hyper Ken is that go to character for me in any game he happens to be in.
Great video! I remember going to the Fiesta grocery store across the street from where I lived and putting my quarter on the screen.
Ah nice 👍🏽, who was your favourite character or go to character back then? Did you ever get the chance to play any of the home ports? Thanks for watching the video.
The Castlevania IP definitely has a lot of sales potential with this new wave of gothic horror + the Netflix show, but I also don't know where they'd take the story. Perhaps they could make a game set in the Netflix universe, since the main game canon doesn't really have any loose ends anymore. Games like Bloodstained do prove that brand-new IP's are worth investing into, though.
Excellent point, I never thought about a netflix timeline or universe which would really be cool. Using your idea could also really add some interesting new gameplay ideas as well
