    Why can't some of the big philanthropists (like Bill Gates , Mark Zuckerberg , Warren Buffet ) in California start a fund to restore the sea. Its in their own back yard for christ sake. They contribute billions to the poor, this would be no different. Or how about we make it some kind of charity so people who give can write it off their taxes, then the Federal Government pays for fixing it as it should be. Build one less fighter jet and pay to save the sea and divert a potential health disaster!!!

  • @markinfrisco
    @markinfrisco 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    It took very brave people with great imagination to harness the great Colorado river which now provides water for four states and even some going to mexico. It took those same type to plug the breach in the canal that caused the sea. But it seems these types of great people have all died. And no one now has the guts to do what they did in the past. Great public work projects, but now nothing, just excuses and studies and more studies.......like pissing on a forest fire!!

    • @brethuish
      @brethuish 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrew Kline thanks for you comment andrew but you are wrong. The point is, with the ebb and flow the colorado moved the wetlands to the south in Mexico. Now the colorado is so dry that there IS no more Colorado River in Mexico. So if the salton sea goes away so do the wetlands for the birds. The wetlands will not move south again, they will disappear. You need to watch the full documentary

    Just in passing, why do they not make some siphon tubes to bring ocean water in? Kind of like the siphons that bring the Colorado River water over the mountains. At so far below sea level, the siphons would be better efficient than the ones in use today. I'd plan a salt factory at the shore line of the new sea, and the less saline ocean water could fill some of the basin, bring some new business to the area, and keep the new ecology going. At 125F, the evaporation beds would be much more efficient than the ones by San Frisco.

  • @KyleTV21
    @KyleTV21 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Salton sea can be saved all you need to do is make a river dug from the Pacific Ocean to the Salton Sea that will bring water in and then a river dug from the Salton sea to the Gulf of California that will circulate the water and make it less slaty and no fish will die so there would be no smell and then It could be as popular as it once was! But the US government won't do that it's so dimple to dig rivers

    Join it to the Gulf of California, and let the sea water flow in. It becomes an extension of the open sea, less salty and available for recreation and everything. The local people can all switch to entertainment and recreation business, live and let live. Colorado's water should not be wasted on a pleasure dome for the few

    • @kevinnulph
      @kevinnulph 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      My thoughts exactly... Being that it's so far below sea level just dig a channel from the gulf to the Salton... Hell we wouldn't even need to dig the whole 70 miles just far enough from the gulf side to give the water a start and let gravity do the rest of the work the waters from the gulf would pour in and dig the rest... This would be nothing in comparison to the conditions we faced digging the Panama canal... Although the down side to this is all the communities as well as the Union Pacific main line that runs along the eastern edge of the lake would be submerged under 285+/- feet of water...

    • @brethuish
      @brethuish 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kevinnulph the problem is NOT just getting water into the area but also getting it out. If it leaves by evaporation only then it is still a dead sea that just becomes more saline every year.

    The pacific flyway for migratory birds and air quality in the Coachella valley is now further imperiled by the continuing expansion of a 5000 turbine wind farm a few miles to the north west of the Salton Sea. Besides birdkills the massive turbine farm generates ground level air turbulence and mobilizes dust, bioparticulates, and inorganic particulates exposing the human population in the valley. These dust streams are clearly visible down wind, though little is known about their specific health effects. That being said, human population living and visiting in the Coachella valley continues to rise. JAN 2014

    The Salton Sea is not a natural water lake. It was accidently made when water from early irrigation ditches taking water from the Colorado River west flooded and the water emptied into a dry salt pan or dry ancient lake bed. It filled it up with fresh water and so the state had it stocked with fresh water fish for anglers to catch, but with in a few years the salt pan beneath the lake started melting and the lake became too salty for the fish and most of them died. The lakes edges are covered by beaches of most billions of tiny fish vertibrae and dead fish skeletons. It may have become a haven for many fish, birds and other animals but like the inland sea that was there 1000's of years ago and dried up as the land rose or dry periods came of whatever it will eventually dry up again.

    • @claytpnpalmer1917
      @claytpnpalmer1917 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The salt from the ancient lake basin took years to soak into the Salton Sea. It its early years when it first filled in from the over flooded irrigation ditches it harbored many kinds of fresh water fish and was a paradise. But with 60 years it became too salty and most fish died, those that survive can tolerate the salty solution. All animals on the Earth have had to deal with death and extinction as the planet has changed of the millennia. Do we cry over the dinosaurs that roamed the Earth for millions of years only to go extinct or evolved into new species via natural selection?

    • @brethuish
      @brethuish 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Claytpn Palmer First: It is NOT salty because of a salty sea-bed. It is salty because it is a dead sea. Water does not leave it just evaporates leaving the salt behind. Second: It IS a natural lake, just not this time. The sea has come and and gone many times of the centuries. The last incarnation was just helped along by man. Historically the creation of the lake and its demise were natural events. You need to watch the full documentary.

    • @Rvfootprints
      @Rvfootprints 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      bret huish I completely agree with you. Additionally it is not as dead as one might think. In fact, the eco system is teaming with life.

    • @claytpnpalmer1917
      @claytpnpalmer1917 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      But because it is very salty its life is prehistoric, like brine shrimp and the like. Most fish that were stocked in the lake have died off, only the hardiest ones have survived. The edge s of the lake are surrounded with billions of vertabrea(?) of fish that have died in it since it flooded and was stocked. Many old towns along its shores have become ghost towns.

    when sea water evaporates it leaves behind its salt content, using sea water will make it saltier and kill off the wildlife. they will need a desalination plant or a way to flush the salt water from the salton sea to remove the salt content.

    If the Salton Sea dies it will create a toxic dust bowl of more than 500 square miles. All of its toxins and pollutants will become airborne reaching far beyond San Diego, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. So we can't really let it die in peace. Unless you want the death of a large part of USA.
