TASTEFUL Baroque Piano Pedaling | Scarlatti Techniques
Hello there. Thanks for your great video. I am struggling with measures 25-26 just before the "stretto" section. I can play both hands separately and together and think I have good fingering for the left hand but I can't make it sound how it should /how I have heard it on recordings I was wondering whether I was over-pedalling this section or if I should play it faster but without pedal. the repetition of the B flat -F -B flat chord (right hand )in measure 25 sounds particularly clumsy .If you could give some advice I would be grateful, I realise it's difficult to assess without hearing me play. Thanks
That’s a very difficult section for sure! Use full damper pedal but try changing every time you play your left hand 5th finger in bars 25-26. You can buy my piano lesson course on this piece for only $13 and you’ll get the sheet music with my fingering and pedal markings, if you’re interested. You can access the course at BrillantePianoDuo.com Thanks for your comment!
@@BRILLANTEPianoLessons thank you
I've been using Hanon and Biehl, trying to keep the tempo slow, and paying attention to musicality. I use the Brown Scale Book to remind myself of tricky fingering (to me, anyway) during scale runs up and down the keyboard. Thank you for your tips on left hand strength. I certainly need them!
It’s great that you’re practicing scales and exercises! I recommend pushing yourself on the speed with these exercises books (speed comes with practice and time). But always play at a tempo that you can play even and keep your hands exactly together. Thanks for your comment!
Nice, thanks :-)
You’re so welcome! Thanks for the comment 💫
Congrats !

@@BRILLANTEPianoLessons Yes, we can see you re serious professionals!

Nice!
Thanks so much for your support!
Beautiful !!!
Thank you! It’s such an incredible piece right?
@@BRILLANTEPianoLessons Yes!!! I fell in love with it, now I'm studing it. Thanks!!!
Great tips :) i'm actually working on bachs prelude and fugue right now! Very helpful!
Thank you! That’s a must learn. Enjoy!
Chopin revolutionary is my go to for warming my left hand till today :) also thanks for the hanon tip... I hardly play left hand separate on any of his exercises and when I do the weakness in that hand is clear! So yes I will take that as a note and do more left on the hanon exercises.
Well Hanon isn’t as fun as Chopin Revolutionary! Thanks for commenting 🥰
Wow but when am practicing scales i find it difficult to master speed should i first play one key until i master speed in contrary motion
Ah well I wouldn’t just play one scale. I recommend using a scale book series and gradually work through each level. The scale books I listed in the description build on concepts and are organized by the circle of 5ths. Happy practicing!
This is really helpful for me. I just started learning and was focusing on trying to grasp all of the keys to quickly. Now I'm just starting slow mastering C (scale chords arpeggios), then on to the next key.
I’m so glad to hear this was helpful! If you get a scale book that I linked in the description it will help you progress gradually. It builds on concepts and is organized in the circle of 5ths order.
U look like gerogia meloni's younger sister
Hmmm I’ve never heard that one! I guess I’ll take it as a compliment 😘

So great to hear! Thank you
If you practice chords without a song you create songs!!! Hello? McFly?
Ha! Yes of course you can create songs with chords but most people don’t have the skills to do that.
While the golden age of the piano maybe 100 years ago, the golden age of video is here and now. It's the impressive dexterity and style in how people use their fingers to play the video recording and creation tools. Excellent, excellent video. Can't overemphasize that aspect.
Such a nice comment!!! Thank you soooo much.
What a wonderful teacher who is so delightful to listen to. This lesson on pedalling contained so much information, all explained so clearly, and including some points that I had been completely confused about. Thank you!
This means so much. Thank you!!! It’s so good to hear that it was helpful.
Thank you!! One of my most favorite pieces. Will be sure to grab the full version this weekend. I played half of it in the past and gave up so happy to see this
We’re so appreciative of your support! 💖
very good session
I’m so happy you found it helpful! Thanks for the comment.
It is belived that rachminoff had a dream he was in a coffin and thats why the song sounds like that
I haven’t heard that! Interesting!
No proof of this. I only hear this story on the internet and you tube. He was commissioned to write small preludes and needed money. This song is based on the bells of the burning St Petersburg church.
Yes hence the nickname “The Bells of Moscow” Thanks for your input!
Hmm...My opinion is at least for me,that fingering is the best way for me too memorize a piece. Granted it does take a few months depending on the piece Also I would recommend, Everybody Work on there relative pitch before you play by Memory., in a concert or recital. Very few of us have absolute pitch.
Yes I mentioned fingering towards the beginning of my video. And ear training is very helpful. I didn’t mention much about ear training. Good point! Thank you
Teaching for 30 years! What, did you start when you were 2?
I started teaching at age 16. That’s been the main comment from this video! 😆
Do you recommend the same Faber books for older people learning the piano, us older folks 65+. or suggest different ? Thank you and your mom for the time and effort put into these video's.
Thank you so much for the nice comment! That gives us the motivation to keep going with this channel. I think Faber is a great series for any age honestly. You could try the Accelerated Piano Adventures series by Faber that is geared towards older beginners and progresses a little quicker.
Lot of great info here, thank you so much!
So good to know it was helpful! Thanks for letting us know 💖
I had the agitato part quite challenging. And also, the pedaling is too fast, gotta be very careful and precise.
Yes the Agitato section is very difficult! I did a more in-depth piano lesson on this piece and talked about tips for the middle section.
Presenters always point to their left for the next video, but nothing appears on my screen.
You didn’t see the next video that I recommended at the end? Hmmm it shows up for me. But just an fyi the next video is usually linked in the description if that happens. Thanks for your comment.
thank you just what I needed
Oh good! Thanks for letting me know. 💫
will you consider teaching Moonlight Sonata 1st Mvmt, Pathetique 2nd, Etude 10, 3, and Mozart 545 2nd or first 12 measures of it or them please?
You would like a full piano lesson on these pieces? We are definitely planning to post a lot of piano lessons on famous classical pieces like the ones you mentioned. We’re running as fast as we can! 😅This TH-cam thing is an insane amount of work! But thank you for your suggestions! We appreciate it.
@BRILLANTEPianoLessons either full lesson or just the first 12 measures of them would be good too... like I am able to play the full Moonlight Sonata 1st mvmt, but have to keep playing or else I will forget after 2 months. Some other pieces may be too difficult to me if it is beyond the first 12 or 20 measures. Thank you. Maybe if you treat TH-cam as a hobby, then it wouldn't have any time pressure because you treat it as a fun thing to do. But I know, TH-cam has some kind of algorithm to decide whether to promote your videos... sort of like, if I remember the SAT word like abstruse, they think I am smart and should go to a good school but if I think it is not a word that is often used and don't learn it and don't follow the system, they think I am not good and don't let me go to a good school. The same if I memorize software interview questions and answers. If I memorize it and recite it during an interview, they may hire me, while if I don't bother to memorize them to "crack" the interview, they think I am no good (there are 2000 of such questions and answers in the database called LeetCode. Each one of these could take 10 to 30 minutes to solve but in the past it took people days or even years to solve.) Now they want you to memorize them all to "show that you are good", but some experienced engineers consider it quite silly to memorize questions and answers like this.
@@BRILLANTEPianoLessons (by the way, the teacher Josh Wright teaches a portion on TH-cam and sell the rest of the lesson on Teachable... not sure how you want to do it. Pianote did have a full lesson for Moonlight Sonata 1st mvmt.
Yes if you want to be successful on TH-cam and have your videos seen you have to post regularly. Stay tuned for our piano lessons on specific classical pieces! We do have piano lesson courses on our website like Josh Wright does. We’re just getting started though. Thank you!
I have never had an issue with memorization. Memorization seems to extend from correct practice. Musicians seem to think that "running a piece" is the same as "practice". Practice and playing your instrument are NOT the same thing. To practice, you should be isolating small sections, i.e. 2 notes, 2 beats, a bar, 2 bars, and solving the problems presented in each bar. Play these small sections slowly, very slowly, correctly, then play each small section many times exactly the same way each time. If you find that the approach you've tried doesn't work, try a different fingering, or hand motion. Yes, sections as small as 2 neighboring notes, or even a single note or chord. If you practice correctly, I don't understand how you could ever struggle with memory.
Memorizing is very easy for some people. I’ve personally struggled with it, mostly because I have bad performance anxiety. So using the cognitive memory techniques from this video really helps me to feel confident and keep my pieces memorized long-term. Thanks for your comment!
Every piano teacher under the sun advocates starting with the key of C, and I get it: no sharps or flats, all white keys, easy to read. Chopin disagreed, and I'm in his camp. C is the hardest key to play in because it's furthest from the natural reference position of the hand. Counterintuitive though it may sound, start your students in the key of B major and they'll have a much better time: the long fingers will be falling on the black (high) keys, and they'll learn very quickly to slide in and out of the black-key zone, keep their wrists up (you can't slide smoothly into and out of the high-key zone without doing that), and they won't get in the nasty habit of curling their fingers because they're used to having to try to get all the fingertips (including the thumb and pinky) in a straight line. Progress to black-key-rich keys like F#/Gb, Db, Ab, and E, then Eb, A, Bb, and D, and finally, F and G#. Save C for the very last because, although it's the easiest key to read, it's the hardest to play with good body mechanics. Your students will thank you later in their careers once they realize the favour you did them.
Yes the key of C Major is definitely difficult and I always talk to my students about why that is. It’s important to learn the circle of 5ths though and I was trying to create a simple practice plan in this video that people could follow. Thanks for your comment!
The worst memory is motor memory, simply don't use it at all. After many years of playing the piano, I almost only use cognitive memory. Especially just the mental image of playing a piece note for note and the mental image of the theoretical structure of the piece. The real problem is long-term memory. If I don't play a piece, over time I lose the ability to play it from memory.
Yes motor memory can cause us musicians a lot of problems! Many people think they have a piece memorized when it’s really only in their fingers. It can stop us from reading the music and working on cognitive memorization techniques. Thanks for your comment!
@BRILLANTEPianoLessons this is how I play my pieces I sight read them first, and then when I became familiar with them, I am humbly speaking able yo memorise them, a example of this is when I recently taught myself the Mozart piano sonatas k331 and k332, it's amazing how incredible our brain 🧠 is to be able to do this, all thanks to our creator the true God JEHOVAH, iam now learning the piano sonata k570 no17 1st movement, and hope I can commit to memory, this sonata soon thanks for the video, greetings from wales uk 😀
Yes our brains are truly incredible! And it sounds like you have a special gift of memorizing easily!
@BRILLANTEPianoLessons thank you for your kind and encouraging comment, I definitely agree, our brains are wonderfull, it's like I see the notes iam playing in my head, and also the pattern of how the notes are played, a good example is a piece like Beethovens Moonlight sonata 1st movement, the triplets are in my head and as iam playing its like my brain 🧠 is scanning the notes and also the pattern of these notes and the sequence they are played, and that is the same of all my pieces, of course iam imperfect I made mistakes, but my brain immediately let's me know, and then iam able yo correct my mistake, truly only God's creation of the brain can ever explain this, all the best from wales uk
Merci 🙏 ☺️
You’re so welcome! Thank you for the nice comment 💖
Sadly music teachers are not teaching students how to learn. Ive had piano teachers before and all they dobis play some music, send you home with it, but dont teach you how to memorize the music or any other details. Or even how to practice. I've quit every piano teacher I've had over the years because they just dont know how to teach. Just because you know how to play, doesn't mean you know how to teach. And 30 minutes is not long enough for a lesson lol. Thanks for this vid, its eye opening!!
I definitely agree that playing well doesn’t mean you can teach well! I am sad that you had a bad experience with piano teachers. I know a lot of amazing teachers. But there are some bad ones out there for sure! I hope you’ll watch our channel and get some new tips. Thanks for commenting!
I really liked that the concept of repetition for remembering was a addressed in a thoughtful way. It really added extra authority to what you were saying. Motor memory is a thing, ‘muscle’ memory isn’t! 😊 Thanks for sharing your experience.
Oh did I accidentally say muscle memory in the video? 😬 I’m very nervous on camera. Thank you for the nice comment!
@@BRILLANTEPianoLessons .No, you didn’t, (unlike almost every other video on the subject!). That’s what I appreciated so much, and sets you apart. Well done and thanks again.

Some loverly pieces, that look fun to play, being humbly speaking s self taught pianist from the age of 15yrs old iam 53 yrs old now, I've just managed to teach myself to play the 3 movements of mozarts piano sonata k332 in f major, to go with my A major k331 theme and 6 variations and the rondo alla turca, ( menuetto and trio next) and the sonata in C major k545 1st movement learning the other 2 movements, I do feel humbly speaking proud of what I've accomplished, and I may give these fun pieces a go to help to keep improving with my technique, greetings from wales uk 😀
Very impressive that you’re self taught and playing such advanced pieces! Yes give these a try! My students love them.
@BRILLANTEPianoLessons thank you for your kind comment, I recently purchased a Casio s110 digital piano, and it as a fantastic, grand piano sound and mechanism, which gives me the motive to keep learning more pieces, I humbly speaking realise there are loads of pianists better than me, but yes I do feel a sense of achievement, In that I taught myself to read music and play these pieces I've always wanted to play, all the best from wales uk. 👍
It’s so great that you’re enjoying playing and loving your instrument! Thanks for your comments.
Thank you
You’re welcome! Thanks for the comment 💖
Hey! Thanks for the video. I have some questions in the following steps you said: Step 1) I wanna practice 1 hour p/day, so, i should do 1 key, starting from the C and follow the circle of 5⁰, per day? Or i should just change the key, when i masterize it? Step 3) (Sight reading): Can i use the hanon 100 progressive studies Op 139, vol 1., to practice the sight reading, in order, 1-100, pick up 1 study from it, and just go to the next one when i masterize it? Thanks!
Hi! For technique, stick with one key until you master it (1-2 weeks). Push yourself on the speed with the metronome. I recommend the Keith Snell Scale Skills series. Czerny, Hanon and Fingerpower is the exercise part of your technique (not sight reading). I would stick with 1 exercise and work up the speed for 1-2 weeks before moving on to the next exercise. I hope this helps! Thanks for reaching out.
I only find sightreading videos playing childish music. Well, I need to sight reading Scriabin, Bartok, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff music. How to do that ? 😮😮😮
You can absolutely sight read classical works from the great composers! You just need to gradually work up your sight reading level. You should be able to play hands together on the first day and count when you sight read. Gradually work up your level of difficulty by practicing a lot and learning a lot of pieces.
@@BRILLANTEPianoLessons Thank you very much for the insight. 🙏👍
You’re so welcome!
wow
Thank you!
💥 Could you apply these techniques on Scriabin prelude Op 11 # 8 ? It would be amazing watching someone sightreading it without looking at the keys. 🎉❤
Are you asking ME to sight read Scriabin’s Prelude and make a video of it? You can absolutely use the same techniques from this video for sight reading any piece. Thanks for your comment! ✨
@@BRILLANTEPianoLessons Indeed, I'm asking you to sightread it, if you can, but please, don't play it before you really record in realtime, so that we can appreciate your insights on how to better approach the difficulties of the piece. There's some difficulties, specially on large jumps, and with the rhythm. Another suggestion would be, if you please, try to sightread Scriabin prelude Op 27 no 1. This would be amazing to watch. Thank you very much and congratulations for the excellent lesson on sight reading. 🙏👍❤️
Ok it’s a great suggestion to make a video of me sight reading a brand new piece. Thank you! You love Scriabin? 🤔
@@BRILLANTEPianoLessons Thank you very much. Yes, I love Scriabin music, specially the preludes, poems, mazurkas... Indeed, everything. But I also love Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel, and many others. 🙏👍❤️
Good advice as I truly suffer from lack of time (or lack of making the time) and boredom... with your tips I hope to overcome both of these 👍
Yes this is so common! I hope you’ll try some of these ideas out and find some inspiration to keep going! Thanks for your comment 💖
