    Thank you for this very important info for me and my husband. Our question, pls: We have a very much settled son and daughter with families now. Both my husband and I live in our own paid-off house; having done so much work in the house, my husband preferred, after our departure in this lifetime, that it be left to one of our children, not to sell the house, but to live or continue to look after it, which my daughter wishes to, but not my son who is not after it. Kindly advise where we should start - much appreciated.

    31:00 Start 34:55 Opening statements 45:15 What personal qualities do you bring to the role of mayor. How does that play into your vision for the city? 55:45 The draft Official Plan calls for the city to look within it's boundaries for serviced employment lands. Many years have been spent trying to negotiate agreements with neighboring municipalities along the Highway 115 Corridor. What will be your approach to working with neighboring municipalities to create more serviced employment land, or do you plan to focus within city boundaries? 1:03:53 The planning and approval process for building new developments can be time-consuming and uncertain. Businesses are struggling to attract talent, partly due to the lack of available housing. The province introduced Bill 109 - 'More Homes For Everyone' Act in an attempt to streamline and speed up some of that process. What parts of the building approval process will you address to streamline development? 1:15:04 Many residents and businesses throughout the region are interconnected and heavily dependant on working as a region on things like tourism, economic development, transportation, and housing. How will you engage our partners in Peterborough County, First Nations communities, and beyond to grow most effectively as a region? 1:20:06 How do you plan to bring new business to Peterborough, and what type of new business will you try to recruit? 1:28:11 Many businesses are on the frontlines dealing with the devastating effects of the opioid epidemic as well as the shortcomings in addressing mental health and homelessness. What will you do to work with the province to address these pressing public health issues. 1:34:06 The city has made it clear, it plans to address climate change. It's going to take leadership from government but, ultimately, the private sector will play a key role in meaningful greenhouse gas emission reductions. How should the city engage local businesses to work toward climate change goals? 1:38:22 According to the Canadian Chamber Of Commerce, more than a quarter of businesses in Canada report rising costs in real estate, leasing, and property tax as a barrier to growth. What will you do as mayor to address the rising costs of having a physical business location? 1:46:58 Rising inflation is ranked as the number one barrier to business and that includes input cost, rising wages, transportation... we've all felt it in various ways. Recognizing that this is happening across the country, and around the world, what is something the municipality can do at the local level to provide some relief to businesses and residents? 1:51:50 Closing remarks

    Nice to see an Ontario Party candidate being given equal treatment with the other candidates. In the Ottawa Centre debate there was no Ontario Party candidate but the True Blue candidate was only allowed to make closing statements along with an independent and the candidate for an obscure left wing party. There are six parties that had members in Queen's Park at the dissolution of the legislature, and it seemed an arbitrary division. You might say that only the PCs and the Liberals are official parties in the Ontario legislature, and only their candidates should be allowed to debate. The other candidates should all, at most, be allowed to make closing statements. I tried to put the following question to the candidates in my riding, Ottawa-Centre, for the May 12 virtual debate, but the moderator, CBC radio host Amanda Pfeffer, never asked it. I am posting it here and I hope that some or all of the candidates will respond on behalf of their parties: ‘TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin has been sycophantic towards the Liberal Party of Canada for a decade or more now. Last year, it deliberately withheld information from its viewers that the Trudeau government planned to send inflation soaring prior to the 2021 election to help ensure its re-election. This was confirmed with the background document for the 2021 renewal of the inflation-control agreement, which showed that Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland negotiated what was essentially a change to the same inflationary framework as was announced by the US Federal Reserve Board in August 2020. Given its outrageous behaviour, do you agree that TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin must be cancelled?’ By the way, on May 18 Statistics Canada announced the inflation rate rose to 6.8%. This was the highest inflation rate since January 1991, and, adjusting for changes in measurement bias, the highest inflation rate since March 1983. The provincial government is pretty much a bit player in the ongoing inflation surge; this was largely the creation of the Bank of Canada at the instigation of the federal government.

    First impression - opening statements : Ontario Party guy seems level-headed. NDP seems likeable. Liberal guy seems like a good talker. Conservative seems to be fighting the 2018 election(seriously, those talking points are giving me deja vu). Green candidate didn't leave an impression. First impression - housing : Tom sees the investment problem as an issue of foreign money. Jen sees CoL/wages issue. Greg sees... I had to repeat him three times and I'm still not sure. 'Support' for people on fixed incomes - whatever that means. Dave sees a supply shortage, solutions via cutting red tape. Robert sees housing density issue, wants to preserve and improve the red tape(it's necessary). First impression - anticipated lack of skilled hands : Jen sees lack of education funding, mental health issues. Greg sees kids falling behind in education, wants to promote trades to kids. Dave sees a need to bribe students into the trades through grants and $500/week (which is "enough" to live on, but too much for OW/ODSP)... Sorry, let's try that again. Dave sees an issue with unaffordable education for the skilled trades and wants to supplement your payments with government grants. Also, we can encourage cheap foreign labour. Robert wants free college tuition(for a year?) and guaranteed work for 60,000 young people. He'll also increase home inspections(?) and incentivize businesses to transition to a green economy. Tom sees flaws with what we teach students, competition with foreign students for jobs, funding is insufficient to provide further subsidised education. First impressions - plans for small businesses and people affected by housing crisis/mental health and addictions : Greg sees security issues downtown, tax holiday for two years. Dave sees need for safe spaces for addictions. Robert will provide housing and personal support for drug users. Tom sees drugs as a health issue, need mental health support, recognises issue across Ontario downtowns. Jen will introduce $1000 tourism rebate, raise minimum wage to $20. Some rebuttals about funding for safe-use site. 34:15 First impressions - internet infrastructure development : Dave current initiatives will see High-speed to another 1/3mill homes by summer and 2/3mill more by 2025. Robert supports efforts to increase high-speed internet. Tom in concerned 5G hasn't been studied enough to prevent health issues or something, thinks Starlink is a good investment for internet in remote areas. Recognises need, but infrastructure cost is potential issue. Jen says the conservatives have only spent 0.2% of promised funding on internet infrastructure. in 4 years, NDP is committed to delivery of service to remote areas. Greg will spend funding to provide service, 'can't zoom outside ptbo, can't work from home'. 40:30 some rebuttals. First impressions - childcare recruitment : Robert will increase wages for childcare because it's skilled work. Tom says taxpayers won't be able to shoulder the cost of subsidised daycare. Jen says we need to invest in childcare, commited to $10/day. Greg says issue is due to Ford's delay in getting childcare funding. Dave says $10/day by 2025, negotiated deal for 6 years of subsidy instead of 5. 50:15 Rebuttals again, now featuring bill 124 First impressions - cost of living : Tom says stop using wallstreet to fund spending, use the BoC to borrow instead. Jen says raise minimum wage, trickle-up economics. Also, pharmacare. Greg food - no tax on meals under $20. Fuel - $1 per ride transit, $9500 subsidised electric vehicles. Housing - rent control, affordable housing construction. Dave says no provincial income tax on income under $50,000(wow). Robert will invest in basic income and fix legislated poverty(low support for OW/ODSP). 58:00 Rebuttals. Half-time Break

    • @thegreenxeno9430
      @thegreenxeno9430 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First Impressions - support for review of construction act : Jen - unsure. Greg says co-operation is necessary, changes are on the table if necessary. Dave says work is under way to address housing issue. Robert wants to increase density, so construction act review is on the table. Tom - also passes due to lack of knowledge. 1:15:00 Rebuttals First Impressions - recovery of local businesses : Greg 2 year tax holiday for businesses. Dave says cancelled contracts for energy saved money. Robert sees the need to better prepare the economy for disruption. Tom says lockdowns and masks and pandemic spending were unnecessary. Jen says we need to support small businesses with rebates and raise minimum wage. 1:21:49 Rebuttals : Dave - "My mistake has been trying to keep people alive during covid." /ooc First Impressions - investing in aging at home : Dave - $10,000 in rebates for installing aging-related accomodations, has invested in long-term and at-home care (non-specific). Robert - double ODSP payments. Tom - system is crumbling due to current and past mismanagement. Jen - bill 124 directly affected quality of care, long-term care needs to be a social safety net, not a private investment. Gerg - end for-profit care, $25 wage for homecare. 1:29:45 Rebuttals First Impression : Learning gaps : Robert - step 1 solve pandemic crisis, mental health support. Tom - covid-0 is a irresponsible approach, early childhood gender education is damaging to children's sense of self. Jen - mental health support is priority, cap of 20 student per class in kindergarten, lowering caps up to grade 8. Greg - cap class sizes at 20, bring back grade 13, stop highway 413. Dave - real mental health supports are being setup for students. 1:37:20 Rebuttals First Impression - energy future : Tom - fan of renewable, price is down, should invest in infrastructure to prevent buying from USA. Jen - climate justice -> invest in renewable energy, rebates for electric cars, proper consultations with Ring of Fire. Greg - Libs cancelled coal plants, aiming at net-zero ASAP. Dave - small modular reactors -> distributed energy production for efficiency and medical isotope production. Robert - reduce subsidies for wealthy people, something about trading (carbon credits?). First Impressions - Tiny homes / secondary suites : Jen - interesting, not a 'full' solution. Greg - agree with Jen, bring back basic income pilot. Dave - legislation has been passed that allows for municipalities to pass a bylaw to allow a secondary suite in every home - but PTBO hasn't taken that action. Robert - Interest exists in building these homes, not a cure-all, but will be helpful. Tom - the market wants them, but due to need, not want. We should fix that. First Impressions - Closing statements : Dave - reduced cost of hockey, served ptbo longer than just as mpp, need 4 more years to git-r-dun. Greg - thank you, plz vote for education, not smog, cheap transit, end for-profit long-term care, increase at-home care, support small businesses hit by covid, fight climate emergency, get results at Queen's Park. Jen - Cons and Libs r bad, I will work for you. Tom - Conservatives are bad with money, too much tax. Blue is the new red. We won't 'whip' votes. Robert - economy and the environment are intrinsically linked, send more Greens to Queens.

    • @thegreenxeno9430
      @thegreenxeno9430 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom impressed me, though I'm not sure how much of his platform is backed up by data. I like the NDP, but is it weird if I think their plans aren't ambitious enough? The Green suffered from the platform not being out yet. Red platform seemed lackluster. I like the minimum income idea, I question whether another pilot is necessary. Like that, to some degree, for most of what he said. Also some weird spending. Like... $1 transit sounds nice, but it'll be a big shock to low-income budgets when that stops. Blue seemed confident in their plan. I don't share that confidence. They did not communicate their confidence to me. I'll have to go digging on a website. I feel the regulation cutting is a bit reckless.

Who says this won't last forever Covid keeps mutating we need a broader perspective then just vaccine policy it doesn't fit everyones shoes. Who to say we keep paying Pharmacare every year for a new shot? Why aren't we pushing for better practices with hand washing, wearing masks, janitoring more often in schools, bringing in new air filtration units for these things.

      Ok so the honest opinion on Universal basic income is that its not affordable at this time being that we are in chaos mode in debt as a country. Thats why over the pandemic they only really wanted to support those that had a job because they were the ones keeping the country together. Its a sad fact I hate saying it but its just a dream right now. We do have programs like the CRB & UBI based on case to case individuals when needing assistance no where near the $2000 a month but still its thankful to have people on welfare I believe need a bit of a boost you can't live on that. Housing on the other hand? Yeah that in itself needs addressing 100%
