Overcoming The Fear Of Other People's Opinions | Dr. Michael Gervais
If you liked the book "The Courage To Be Disliked" or you're just looking for some help building self esteem, you'll love this interview! Could the lingering fear of what others think be the invisible chain holding you back from true authenticity and peak performance? Join me as Dr. Michael Gervais, a renowned high-performance psychologist, takes us on an exploration of FOPO - fear of other people's opinions - and its deep-seated impact on our lives. As we discuss his new book, "The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying About What People Think of You", we'll uncover how this primal fear not only shapes our self-identity but also constrains us within an armor of pretense, stripping away the joy of living in the moment and pursuing our true potential.
This episode is a treasure trove of transformative insights, weaving together powerful stories from the worlds of music, sports, and history. You'll hear about U2's early struggles, an NBA player's turning point, and a study on golfers that reveals the intricate dance of identity and pressure. We'll also unpack the physiological turmoil triggered by public speaking and spotlight moments, offering strategies to shift from a performance-based identity to one that's rooted in purpose. Listen to the inspiring tales of figures like Florence Nightingale, who transcended fear to forge a purpose-driven legacy.
Dr. Gervais and I also reflect on the symbiotic relationship between mental fortitude and physical presence, sharing anecdotes from the UFC and personal life that highlight this dynamic. We also tackle the challenge of excessive worry about others' opinions in today's polarized society and how embracing our individuality can foster deeper connections.
With love and ease,
Susie

I’ve struggled with this. While I cater to others, I do share my opinions but listen to others. I’m naturally a caretaker. My father was an alcoholic. I hated to see him embarrassed or humiliated or stressed. It hurts me emotionally to see others hurt so I do my best to lift them up and sacrifice what seems reasonable to me. I believe we should love other like Christ and be selfless. If I were to dismiss someone, be harsh, or not comfort them when they are distressed, I would be acting in a way that is inauthentic. Do you think some people simply have a caregiving and loving archetype, like Jesus?

Adhd is genetic. When my son was born, i was super happy and excited for him. I was being taken care like some royality during whole pregnancy. Yet when he was born, i could tell that something is there. He was hyperactive and difficult since very begining. He has been very much loved by everyone in family, including grand parents and uncle.. kind of well pampeted. He is 3 now, i dont find anything in the environment to fix. Its just that now i know, i had adhd the whole time and so do my mother. Its annoying to forget important and small things all the time, its overwhelming to say the least and along with my own insecurities its super difficult to raise such a strong willed boy. One more point to add is that i am a psychiatrist as well, so the knowledge adds more fear only when it comes to raising this child. My husband is the biggest support in this but nobody understands that he cant overgrow it in 5-6 yrs. I would wish if he could.

Over the past couple of years I have come to realize that I have A.D.D. (I don't seem the have the "hyperactivity" aspect of the malady. But I didn't always have this. My brain was normal functioning until I had gallbladder surgery in 1990, and immediately experienced memory loss and confusion. I've boiled it down to one of two things, or a combination... the first suspected cause would be Post Operative Cognitive Dysfunction from a reaction to Anesthesia, and the other would be that I was extremely jaundiced due to liver infection from gall bladder disease. Both are known to cause Brain Damage. From that point on increasingly, I developed symptoms of ADD, but didn't know it had a name. I am very relieved to know because now I am trying coping strategies and tips and trips which are becoming more readily available online.

Western women in general just need to be more cognizant of everything going on outside of them and their lives. The fact that you can turn on your camera and start talking to the internet is part of the problem. Women need to get off the internet. Women meed to focus on their families and communities, because the communities have never been more neglected. Weve never been more self-centred and yet non-sensical as a race.

What a great conversation. Susie always asks the best questions, because you can tell she's read the book and spent time thinking about it. And Robin is always full of wisdom. I liked the reminder that's what yours is yours and can never be taken away. This is why we don’t live to please man, we live to please God. And the phrase,” live your truth” really just means that I can accept whatever I want and discard whatever I don’t want. Truth doesn’t work that way. Truth is. It doesn’t change with feelings, emotions, or anything of the sort. Truth is objective, not subjective. Unfortunately, this is why we have a generation of confused individuals, bc they believe they’re “living their truth.” Truth is.. God assigns gender. We don’t. But bc we feel a certain way, we allow those feelings to dictate the way we navigate through life. It’s unfortunate and sad. If you’re looking for truth, it’s in the Bible😊
