    Cyd Charrise taught my mother. Says something about who she was to willingly teach black students. Sadly, ballet wasn't the only genre of dance that blacks weren't allowed to, encouraged to, acknowledged as being good enough to perform. My grandmother couldn't dance at the Cotton Club because she wasn't NOTICABLY lighter than a paper bag. No was she able to be a Rockette although one of her best friends who could pass danced at Radio City for the longest time. We got tickets every year... some compensation

    What a pity what those dancers had to face. Raven Wilkinson couldn't mention that she was black and ultimately was told there there was no future in ballet and to open a school for African dance--all because of race!

    • @JusBlazeWifey1000
      @JusBlazeWifey1000 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LaReginaPatrizia Thats some fucked up shit, excuse my french but it just pisses me off. Not one single person should be rejected for anything based on race/skin color. Its so unfair. And then to be told you can only perform with a "white face" !!!!! Obviously she was good enough to get the role, why not let her perform in her own skin! Like wtf! Knowing the struggle these beautiful dancers went through makes me sad. Its sad there is still forms or racism and discrimination out there. I feel such a sense of pride when I see ballerinas of color dance. They should have been allowed to grace the stage from day one.

  • @mccarthybrown
    @mccarthybrown 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    YES! Its from the PBS Documentary called, "I'll Make Me A World." There are 6 tapes (hour long episodes), I believe these clips came from volume IV, "Dreamkeepers."

  • @mccarthybrown
    @mccarthybrown 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its a documentary series - amazing and wonderful, but QUITE LONG. Its called I'll Make Me A World, episode 4 - Dreamkeepers (I believe tape number 4 out of 6, but it could be tape 3). Sometimes you can get it at the library, its an expensive set to get on your own, but sometimes they have some of the tapes on Amazon. Good luck!

    ``And then the best man in the class walked over to me and said `Ms. Brown``` goosebumps :) And Raven Wilkinson was so brave to do what she did in those times. Both of those dancers were truly pioneers and symbols for Black ballet dancers today. Great video

    nope not as career but as a tool for discipline and structure along with self control.

  • @mccarthybrown
    @mccarthybrown 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well its certainly a great discipline to study at any age. Just wasn't sure if you were talking about a career - but I'm thinking MMA isn't generally taken up for career purposes either.

  • @TheWhyteRabbit9
    @TheWhyteRabbit9 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am a female and I always had a love for ballet but my parents didn't have the time or the money. It's this or MMA so who knows, but I am guessing it is very rare for females to start this late though.

  • @mccarthybrown
    @mccarthybrown 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, depends....are you male or female? As unfair as it is, it is easier for men for serveral reasons. If not a man, then yes, but as a amatuer, recreation, or hobby, as for a professional ballerina, 99% percent of the time, you would have had to begin sooner - but never asy never right?

  • @TheWhyteRabbit9
    @TheWhyteRabbit9 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    can you start ballet at age 20?

  • @mccarthybrown
    @mccarthybrown 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes! Its a wonderful documentary. Unfortunately, its rather pricey. Its from a discontinued series on PBS called, "I'll Make Me A World." There are about 4 one hour videos (maybe six?).I've been able to get them from libraries. I have a myself couple too - got on Amazon. They detail the entry of African Americans into film, dance (ballet/modern), literature/poetry, art (sculpture/painting), music (jazz/rap). Its an amazing series, but gets very long for children if you try to show it all.

  • @mccarthybrown
    @mccarthybrown 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is part of an AMAZING documentary, with 5 or 6 videos called I'll Make Me A World. The portion you watched was an excerpt from the video "Dreamkeepers" (I can't remember if it was video 2 or 3). The series works in chronological order to chronicle Blacks intrance into all of the humanities from the 1920s to the 1980s. It was produced by PBS I believe. Le me know if you need more help finding it, I got a couple of the videos on Amazon.

    While your encouragement of the dance form is noted, I should have also included in the description that these students were introduced to the dance form two days prior to the this taping.
