Sweeeeet, a new mantis U video!
Thank you very much, Joshua!
Man I wish I could rip off my skeleton and inflate myself like a balloon. Invertebrates are wild.
They be hungry bois and görls
I would’ve thought one bug and he’d be done eating but not necessarily 😉
Love how you're just casually gaming with your mantis hanging off your hand eating lol
I think people are always surprised by how smart they are, and the fact that they actually learn things. My first orchid mantis caught a fruit fly as an L2 nymph and started eating it backwards, and the fly was able to get away by kicking and moving around so much. Every single time after that, no matter what prey she was eating, she would make sure she ate it headfirst so it would become incapacitated and stop wiggling around in her grasp. I couldn’t believe that one tiny thing that happened when she was a nymph stuck with her for her entire life. I know they prefer eating prey headfirst in general, but she had eaten several fruit flies backwards before one got away and she switched things up. I used to love watching her grab something and spin it around to make sure she wasn’t going to lose it.
Love this, I'm just getting into mantises but I'm falling hard for them.
Shoutout to the TH-cam algorithm for recommending this to me, mantises are so awesome
0:03 what the mantis reaching for
I would’ve loved having these videos when I first started keeping mantises, I’m so glad future keepers will have this as a resource. Great work as always Josh 😊
Loving your channel Keep up the videos because it will definitely help a lot of people!
I use those same mesh enclosures for my Carolina mantids,my three females are still with me and oddly enough still producing fertile eggs even though they’re older.
I have that same plushie, plus I feed my Carolina mantids whatever I catch, crickets, roaches, small spiders, even tiny frogs and geckos for breeding or pregnant females.
Brilliant! I live in Australia and I just got a Hierodula majuscula and its been really hard to find trustworthy sources
would love to see specific spotlight videos on the different individual species you have!!
Planning on doing this down the line, especially for the more unusual/difficult species.
I find the price of fly pupae not bad, but I keep one mantis, not a whole lab!
Compost piles are a godsend for me! More than enough flies.
I used to feed my lil guy masqitos larva
My first male mantis, before I knew better, was fed primarily fruit flies until subadult(stagmo Carolina) He lived about 2 months and successfully mated 7 times with no injuries. He was a BIG flier, I ended up moving onto flies when he hit subadult and he had no issues. I’m glad I moved to flies before he was finished developing. As an adult he was unreasonably picky/skiddish when it came to food. Even in adulthood a housefly would leave him hugging the ceiling. He was quite a bit turned off by roaches too, though would eat them if gut fed. The only thing I found that he consistently went for were firebrats. I kid you not when I tell you this mantis ate the equivalent of like two adult roaches female red runners his entire adult life. He WOULD NOT EAT, but he was a thirsty little bugger. All he wanted was to make love to the females near him. He would finish msting and be trying to get at the other females 8 hours later. His stamina was unbelievable… miss that boy
My first mantis was a male S. Carolina too. They’re crazy little things.
@@thewolven6075I’ve had both as I breed them,of course the females are way better, males are way to flighty.
😊 Thanks for all the info - awesome
Also, feeder?? I hardly know her!! 🤣 Also your bug videos are super cool and so educational!
IM YOUR VERY FIRST VIEW!!! I WIN!!!! I put the MAN in MANTIS!!! 💪🏼💪🏼
Time for some MANTIS ACTION *bow-chicka-wowwow
Class is in session!
Glad I’ve seen how macros are mounting, when I tried I got so scared it seemed so chaotic, same as this 😂
Your mantises are always so beautiful and healthy.
Mantis’ and dragonflies are my absolute favorite insects.
I'm hoping that fruit flies will suffice. Live in an apartment so roaches wouldn't be conducive for the environment. Lol
Unfortunately, fruit flies aren't going to work well once your mantis has molted more than two or three times. Fruit flies don't seem to be nutritionally complete for older mantises, even for small species that still want to catch them. You can improve their nutritional value by gut-loading them on things like baby food or gecko diet, but moving to larger prey like flies, moths, roaches, grasshoppers, etc is just plain necessary. The cockroach species mentioned in this video, as well as many others available, do not infest homes and are pretty easy to keep contained.
@MantisMeet It's a Catch 22 for me because I'm horrified by moths but decided to house two mantids that were outside. I find them so fascinating, otherworldly, and inquisitive. Fortunately, the lights here bring lots of moths. It's been super fun bring able to give these two homes (separate tanks).
@@justsid That's a great solution! If you live where it's abundant and safe, wild-caught food can be an ideal solution for a small number of mantises. If you have adult females, they'll only need to eat a couple times a week, so it can be pretty manageable. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your knowledge. I don't speak English well.Im from Thailand.I breed a few praying mantises.
I wouldn’t have thought a paintbrush would be so helpful with mantis care.
This is good! Thanks for teaching us Joshua!
I always liked the orchid mantis the best!!
very informative Josh!
Thanks for the info - learned a lot. 😊
Impressive and very informative!! 😊
