    I love this! Love that they're happy to show the nerves, the bruises, the aches that come with age, as well as the age/gender range. Better paddlers than me, but great they're showing the less polished side of things, too

    👏👏👏👏 incredible film. I enjoyed this a hell of a lot more than the river runner that made it to Netflix, as an enthusiastic amateur this was much more relatable. I am now just extremely jealous of the rivers you have over in NZ!

    Thank you so much for sharing the passion, this movie deserves to be seen world-wide. As a 67yo I learned to paddle "eau vive" (=water alive) in the French Alpes this year. The feeling and joy of doing it together and taking in the extreme doses of adrenalin and fear of death, fast learning to use the power of the water, it has changed me into a lucky man. This new passion has opened up new worlds and freedom. Your movie shows well how and why. I could never dream up how happy I am for doing it and find so much fun and beauty. This is the improved me for the rest of my life.

      No, unfortunately. I had to make the decision to output in 720 because I was using a lot of lower resolution footage in addition to the footage we shot. Trying to force low res footage into a 1080 environment never works, and it is better in that case to bump the whole thing down.

    Just watched this a second time after almost a year and if anything was more impressed than the first time. I simply can not imagine the amount of time, work, and devotion it took to make this movie. I paddled canoes for years and did a teeny bit of easy class II & III white water so I have some idea of the skill it takes to paddle at these levels. And as a photographer of outdoor adventure and marine scenics I can also appreciate the difficulty of capturing such striking imagery. A job way, way, way, more than well done! I loved this movie!

      Aidan and I started talking about it in 2012, I think. I know I got the camera I shot a lot of it with in Novemberish 2012 and the oldest footage in the film is from that time. The walk up the Hooker River was the first big shoot and somewhat a proof of concept. Drones were still home-built affairs. Paul hauled a tractor battery(!) two hours up the trail to charge the quad copter. It was very tricky to fly. Stability was a contour camera wrapped in rags, and duct taped to the copter on top of a thawed medical gel pack. (You can really see the tech leap between that shoot and the Murchison River in 2015--one of the last shoots we did.) It was fully completed in early 2016 and screened that March. I have no idea how much time was spent editing--probably close to 1000 hours. What I do know is that I never could have done it without a wonderful group of talented and dedicated friends and acquaintances who all jumped on board to help out. The sound was mixed by a paddler from North Carolina who donated his skills (he is a professional) to the project after hearing about it. Truly an amazing community. Thank you for the kind comment. I am really glad you enjoyed it.

    I'm glad to see this was shot in New Zealand. In Idaho, USA, we feel a special kinship with them. NZ is the whitewater and jet boat capital of the southern hemisphere, and Idaho is their northern counterpart. Everybody here knows someone who is a boater, rafter, or a paddler, and I'm sure it's the same for them. We have whitewater running in our veins.

    • @riveringmovie5046

      My first ever whitewater experience was a jetboat trip down Hell's Canyon in 1985. I was 15 and we had taken a cross country trip from Connecticut across Canada and back via the northern US.

    Thank you so much for sharing! This has to be one of the best movies when it comes to explaining the essence of whitewater paddling: The challenges, the fun, the camaraderie, the trust between paddling buddies, the skills one gets to learn running whitewater that are directly applicable to life. I couldn't help but think:"I wish that they would also mention or show this..." only to have it pop up in the movie later. Really well done! I will share this to my paddling buddies and show it to my children, because I think that this didn't get enough publicity when it came out.

    Retired boater due to age and injuries but loved the show. My trip to NZ a couple of years back was fantastic. the people, scenery, and yes! The rivers! Mostly walking and fly fishing to enjoy the rivers, but did see a few nice rapids along the way. Evan Garcia of USA's Columbia River Gorge made a nice NZ kayaking short film a few years back. That's worth a watch too. Well done.

    Easily the best documentary I have ever seen on white water kayaking! From the graceful precisely intentional ballet of slow easy Class 2 & 3 drops through the desperate attempts at surviving the brutal unseen and unseeable complexities of Class 5 & 6 drops, this beautifully done documentary covers it all! And covers it beautifully and with a spirit of modesty and reverence. Years ago while living in San Francisco I watched a documentary account of several Sierra Club kayakers running a difficult section of the Snake River. A friend and I agreed that it had been like watching seagulls buoyantly riding air currents. This film was all that and more...I loved watching it and would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to those who made it, as well as to those paddlers who took part.

    • @riveringmovie5046
      @riveringmovie5046 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I respectfully disagree with you that this is a poor video. We did a lot with the limitations we were working under--and if you have ever recorded sound in a wild river environment, you soon learn it is very difficult and compromises are sometimes made. As for music, that is subjective. If is not to your taste, fair enough, but that does not make it poor.

      I could not disagree more - the music really adds to the overall video, which is brilliant. Each to their own I suppose.
