The Densmore Repatriation Project
มุมมอง 2.5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The Densmore Repatriation Project is named for ethnomusicologist Frances Densmore of Red Wing, Minnesota, who made her first visit to the Standing Rock Reservation in 1911. She recorded traditional songs on a hand-cranked, wax cylinder recorder and spoke with dozens of tribal elders. The songs she recorded, many over 100 years old, had been passed down for generations. Densmore documented this ...

lela was'te wakan, koda. WOPILA. A'ho
Ive followed the canku luta n’ mato sapa wakan for decades. Hunka with Mato. Bear White Paw’s portrait had been on my wall for years so to hear his spoken n’ singing voice was beyond wakan! Wopila to you all for putting these out. Synchronicity led me to learning his most sacred bear meditation song. A’ho, wisosni.
Anyone notice that Indians worship the sun yet many of them look like they've stayed out in it too long.
No photos of sundance arena. Never a picture of the mother cottonwood tree. Ive been to three wiwanyag wacipi, and the medicine there over five days will transform you. From tree day to all the suffering ordeal medicine endured by the dancers is a sacred sight to behold. I had the honor of tending the fire n serving two lodges with the inyan oyate. I was but one of three other fireman serving the stones/grandmothers n grandfathers. Peace ✌️ n mitakuye oyasin. Wopila. A’ho
Tankaishlia pilamayaye lo Wakan Tanka PILAMAYAYE LO MITAKUYE OYSIN
Sounds like a dakota song
Pilamaya pilo for this surge of native spirituality nowadays. From France.
The catholic church .. destroying cultures and employing psycological warfare to scare and brainwash children. Utterly repulsive.
Thank you 💙🪶, appreciate your preservation of these Old Sacred songs💪🏽🪶💙
Woke up this morning, smiled at the rising sun, 3 little birds....
My attempts at an upvote were to the singer and the appreciation of the whole video. I learned some more history. It's so important, if we want to understand the present.
Respect.
O' Wis Te' ~ "Truth blows hard in the wind, you must obtain the ear of the white man, make him listen to the wind, only then, make him learn from truth, greed is troubled in the white man until he ceases the pursuit"
Wow! Being mixed, Shawnee and Scot, I feel this intimately and deeply. I've been on the wrong side of my ancestors for far too long, speaking words they wouldn't care to know, concepts they would find alien, and even gone against my own when I didn't even know my ancestors were also native. I say prayers daily to apologize for my unkindness and derogatory way that I've treated others. Only now do I work to reconnect, and learn, and it is never too late! I now understand that my hatred of others was merely the reflection of my own self loathing and hatred, thus I pray to Kokumthena and ask for forgiveness and direction. Neyiwe and never stop speaking truth.
I have always had a precognitive respect for this ritual. One five day long prayer...
All Sundance comes from Mandan People. The Okipa was a reenactment if the beginning times. Speckled Eagle and lone man. The sioux sundance is a shorter mandan version and the songs are mandan translated into lakota or dakota. words from Frank Fools Crow.
Thank you for this…🙏
Something tells me they are not fluent in the language, it might be their second language.
Please tell me that this channel is not dead

Pilamiye yelo! Hece tu yelo
A little note if I may, the Nakota are not seen as part of the Oceti Sakowin, nor their language a division of the Sioux. What is coined as the Nakota are the Assiniboine and Stoney people, they branched off of the rest of the Oceti Sakowin aroun the 16th century, in fact the Lakota were known to war with them during the 19th century. Otherwise this video is beautiful and informative.
True. You are correct. The Yankton and Yanktonai are Dakota. Elderly Yanktonai on Standing Rock have never referred to themselves as Nakota. They would always call themselves Dakota. For this reason the Yankton and Yanktonai often feel like the invisible and forgotten bands of the Ocheti Sakowin. Half of Standing Rock's population is Yanktonai btw.
Can i just say how incredible this is? Until now i have never heard or found a recording of Lakota speech from the early 20th century. I never knew any actual songs, the words in them, most of what you find are some basic songs given out of context or westernised Lakota music. I didn't know that Sitting Bull was a renowned singer nor that he sang a song when surrendering. It must be understood that due to how the narrative is, the best repository of knowledge for Lakota history and indigenous history in general is the oral histories and anecdotes known only within the circles of the deacendants of those who lived these histories. Otherwise there are many details and nuances lost to the history and ethnography of the Lakota people as you find it in mainstream sources, not to mention mistakes, misinterpretations and westernisations. More people need to record these oral tellings and anecdotes lest they be lost forever 😢
