A deep dive into the literary and cultural significance of the one and only Stephen King.
THE SHINING (1980) | Here's Johnny! [4K UHD]
An ad-lib from Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, "Here's Johnny!" has gone down as one of the most quotable lines in movie history.
Ultra High-Definition 4K - The best quality version you'll find on TH-cam!
In this scene from Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING, Jack Torrance (played by Jack Nicholson) has reached maximum crazy, breaking down a bathroom door with an axe in pursuit of his terrified wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall).
Stephen King is not a fan of Kubrick's adaptation of his book. While he has praised Nicholson's bonkers performance, he ultimately feels the movie short shrifts the Jack Torrance character:
"The character of Jack Torrance has no arc in that movie. Absolutely no arc at all. All he does is get crazier. In the book, he’s a guy who’s struggling with his sanity and finally loses it."

CHILDREN OF THE CORN | Harvest Your Nightmares

Children of the Corn may not come to mind when you think of your favorite horror film franchises like Halloween, Friday the 13th, or Nightmare on Elm Street. In fact it doesn't even rank in the Top 20 (according to Wikipedia) and many of the films never even saw the inside of a movie theater. And while the impetus for this long-running series was an innocuous short story in King's 1978 collecti...

LISEY'S STORY | The Tragedy of Hank Williams
มุมมอง 1262 หลายเดือนก่อน
Stephen King is fond of piling up body counts, but in LISEY'S STORY, one of the main characters has actually already died when the novel begins. Thus kicks off a story full of flashbacks and memories, a journey into the past that is led along and accentuated by the nostalgic folksiness of country music. Themes of magical salvation through music are woven into the story, with a particular focus ...

"A pent house? What is that? Sounds uncomfortable!"
The Shining is the book that broke me. I love it for that.
It will forever be one of my faves
I just finished the book. It was recommended by a friend and it was damned good. Great video as well.
So good, so eerie. And a really interesting dude to chat with, just super enthused with his work. Thanks for checking it out!
@@TheStephenKingdom you're welcome!
We should have a counter for how many times corn is mentioned 😆 I bought the dvd box set years ago and watched them in one night, there are no words
I'd say turn it into a drinking game but you'd have to get your stomach pumped halfway through the episode 😄Also you watched them all IN ONE NIGHT? I don't even know how you recover from something like that. 👏Bravoooo👏
@@TheStephenKingdom there may have been drinking involved in that too

For the algo
Much obliged...
There was a time when my friend and I considered putting out a line of very ugly dolls and calling them Cornfield Kids ❤
Ahhhhhh yeah you know I'd have the entire collection sitting on one of the shelves behind me 🤩
Thanks for sharing this. I subscribed to the Hard Case Crime books & have The Colorado Kid. Charles Ardai fan here.✍️
He's done some pretty amazing stuff with Hard Case Crimes. I always look forward to new releases by them. You can tell Charles LOVES his job
My husband brought home a paperback copy of Carrie from a coworker of his. We both fell in love with King after reading It. We saw the movie at a matinee. The theater was the audience all gasped or cried out at the surprising and shocking ending. We were in our early 20s at the time.
That must have been one hell of an experience! I wish I could go back and watch Carrie for the first time again, that would be so amazing. Thanks for sharing your love of King!
Ebert (and Siskel too) had some weird takes on these movies. Ebert loved and defended “Last Tango” and I cannot find anything that he ever reconsidered it after Maria Schneider spoke about in 2001 and 2007. In fact, Ebert had this weird obsession with Isabella Rossellini being “degraded “ and humiliated in “Blue Velvet” and compares David Lynch’s treatment of his actress unfavorably to “Last Tango.” After all, Bertolucci put Schneider in “an important film.” That is in the original 1985 review of “Blue Velvet” and he has an entire separate essay on why he hated “Blue Velvet” once again lauding Bertolucci’s treatment of Schneider. Rossellini disputed such claims. David Lynch has such a good reputation with difficult scenes involving nudity and that was one of the reasons Patricia Arquette wanted to work with him in “Lost Highway.” I guess “degradation” and nudity were fine as long as Ebert was cool with it. The actresses’ opinions on their own experiences be damned.
It's such a tricky line trying to separate the art itself from the process that created that art, especially when hundreds of people are involved in making a film, and most have nothing to do with the terrible things that can happen during production like in the case of Maria Schneider. Should that film be completely condemned? I'm not in a place to make that judgement, but at the very least, the bad players in those situations need to be dealt with and made to feel real consequences, not just a slap on the wrist and let them go on their merry way. Directors like Bertolucci should not be hailed as visionaries when they do things that are completely unacceptable. But to your point, yeah Siskel and Ebert weren't always consistent in their response to films like that...
Nicholson would have been phenomenal in Misery. Of course I love the movie as-is with Caan. Just sayin’
Would have been a totally different movie, but probably amazing
I also liked her in ‘Tim’ - an early film for Mel Gibson, she was great in that.
So good. Trying to get through as many of her films as I could before the interview was a tall order, but worth it. Still so thankful I got to chat with her before she passed last year
Wow!
The Brave One is one of my favorites. JF is phenomenal.
Incredible film for sure
Big Driver was my fave story in that collection, and I thought it could be a film. Then it was - with Maria Bello! Very good, chilling, hard to watch at times but super-good as to the story.
It's definitely gritty, but it's such a good revenge story (and very underrated in the overall King canon)
The beginning of Dead Zone is a bit like their start as a couple… before the car accident, o’ course. It’s just a great American story.
True! It's too bad that his own car accident 20 years later didn't give him similar psychic powers (that we know of...)
The 2013 version was more like the novel
Worst than the fact that he doesn't remember the 80 s.....
He sure came up with some weird stuff during that time period tho haha
@@Donathon-f6f I was a sober teen in the 1980’s and I barely remember it. Just lots of pastel and shoulder pads.
@@fishjones4618 I'm a tad older than you... for me the 80's were HS and college...and I fell prey (a little) for a while.... but honestly.. what's wrong with pastel and shoulder pads????... lolol 😂... have a great evening..pea6
The date of the accident was June 19th. The same date that was stamped onto the crate of the Creepshow adaptation of his short story The Crate. No fooling!
Which is super bizarre considering how much the number 19 appears in his works, especially throughout the Dark Tower series...
@@TheStephenKingdom it’s in most of his books. Sometimes it’s pretty blatant like the number on Jamie Morton’s father’s amateur race car in Revival, the number of cigarettes in the pack that was on the body of the Colorado Kid, the number that the psychiatric patient in N says is deadly, or the flight number of the plane in the short story The Turbulence Expert. Sometimes it’s hidden within other numbers and you have to do the math. In the (novel) The Shining, the room in the Overlook that Danny Torrance is scared of the most is 217 (2+17=19), the Pass code to get into the Frederick Building where the Finders Keepers detective agency is located is 4753 (4+7+5+3=19). Every time a group of numbers comes up in a Stephen king text, I immediately do the math to see if it adds up to 19. I’m obsessive like that.
Read it in Oct 2023 and again in Sep 2024. It is now one of my favorite books. I plan to reread every year 🖤
Suuuuch a great reread. I just might join you in that endeavor!
Reminds of the gag in Futurama, where they go into a library & there's a door with a sign reading "STEPHEN KING: A to AARDVARK"
lol whether or not you like his work, there's no denying that he's insanely prolific
@@TheStephenKingdom oh yeah, no arguing that -- at this point, he could probably go the Marvel route and start a film production company to do nothing but make adaptations of his books.
@@lovetoeatallthefood I mean the possibilities with the Dark Tower extended universe alone would be endless. I would give them all my money
@@TheStephenKingdom yep, hat kinda seemed to be what the Castle Rock series was going for, before it was cancelled.
#4 come on! Correct-year Roadmasters: easily found online. *WHY show e.g. a lowline '58 Buick, then a '60 Plymouth!?? Anything worth doing is worth doing well. *Do it well please!*
As a car guy (and also as a Stephen King fan) that was a nice idea for a list.
There's so many great (and iconic) cars in the Stephen King universe. Definitely a fun list to compile
I love her so much! Protect this girl at all costs!
She's a national treasure for sure. Always looking forward to whatever she's working on next
hey
Caterpillar crushing a car. That also happens in MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE.
Not only does it crush a car...
I mean when you've gotta get rid of an evil vehicle, you gotta have a Caterpillar , that's just common sense
@@TheStephenKingdom except in Maximum Overdrive it was the caterpillar destroying any chance for the humans to escape. In that movie all of the machines were like Christine
@@RandyBaumery-s4i I mean if you're unlucky enough to find yourself in a King story, it doesn't matter if you're a car, a cat, or a human, your chances of survival are slim haha
@@TheStephenKingdom oh I TOTALLY agree.
Such a shame he turned out to be an absolute dickhead
Wasn't there a book by another author that's a prequel to the overlook hotel?
I know that Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) was working on (or maybe finished?) a prequel script called The Overlook Hotel, but I'm pretty sure the project got scrapped unfortunately. I feel like I remember hearing about a book that was tangentially related, but it's not coming to me at the moment...
Another great video 👏🏾
Thank you!

Do you write your own books? If not You can write this So an oil company digging for oil For the government. As they find the oil. They released this toxic gas that makes everyone insane. They start arguing about Who should keep the oil? and one of the oil workers starts killing the other oil worker with a pickaxe. The government Arrives at the site And wonders what's going on And the workers start to see the government. The government tries to collect the oil. but As He goes to confront the workers. he inhales the gas He starts losing his mind. And they start fighting each other, killing each other for the oil Until it's the last man Standing This sounds like it would be a good Stephen King novel But I think you should of the honor of Writing it in Inspiration of steating king If you want help developing it, I could help with that And if you already do publish books, can I read them?
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This is why I could not listen to the audiobook.
The scene really is almost more gruesome to read/listen to than it is to watch in the movie. Not for the faint of heart, that's for damn sure
The mist is such an amazing film
It's so good, right? I've been a sucker for monster movies for as long as I can remember so I'm a huge fan
@@TheStephenKingdom I thought it was amazing and the part at the end where he kills his loved ones moments before rescue including his son has a sad ending but also a good one
@@byronboast8977 It's devastating but it works SO WELL. Really sticks with you long after you finish watching the movie
I can’t remember the exact quote from Stephen king but I remember he said something along the lines “whoever spoils the ending of this film should be hung drawn and quartered for all of time”
great reading, that was absolutely convincing
Thanks so much! It's such a great little story so I really tried to do it justice
The ending was terrible. He never would have done it. He would do anything, including die, for his son. He chose not to look for his wife, for fear of abandoning his son. He never stopped trying, and took as many with him as he could. In the end he was whispering words of hope into his sleeping sons ear. It was a complete slap in the face to the character. It made the breach into a joke, and destroyed the tension of the story. It brought the story to a crashing halt.. The Mist lived in my mind ever since I first read it wondering what may have happened to them, along with the rest of the world. It made the insane religious fanatic right. It negated the plot of the military destroying the world, messing with things they shouldn't, then being useless.. a common thread in several of his books including The Stand. I watched it in the theater and could have happily punched Darabont in the mouth for ruining one of my favorite stories for no reason except shock value.
Don't think I didn't notice you pronouncing "Saco River" right :P This was a great piece about a stunning bit of film that still stands up well. I look forward to what's next
Had to make a few minor edits after a copyright flag from TH-cam, so figured we'd go ahead and correct that while we were at it 😆 Thanks for bringing that one to our attention
i think the ending made the movie more well known and talked about. It leaves a deeper impact on people and gets them talking. A normal ending might of not had the same impact on the viewer.
Nothing like a swift emotional punch to the gut to get people talking!
No. The film’s ending ruined the story. It disrespects the Lovecraftian tale and inserts a cheap gotcha that does not fit the story at all. Imagine taking a Lovecraft story and inserting “Ha, just kiddin’” as the ending instead. A pity, but the prose story still exists, so I’ll be content with that.
It's a valid point, and while I agree that the film's ending would not have worked for the novella, I think in the cinematic adaptation that this delivers a much more raw and satisfying visual and emotional impact. But I know it's not for everybody...
This is like a tv show, how is this not on streaming? Also I'm the 30th commenter
Hey congrats Number 3-0! We'd love to have the bigger budget of a streamer, but hey, we work with what we got!
I'm pretty sure it's common to know that it was inspired by His drug addiction Due to the fact he literally mentioned that it was Cocaine Was his number one fan
My main question is, how come there's not very Many bands inspired by Stephen King. like sulpur aeon That ban is heavily inspired by HP Lovecraft. and it mentions all of HP Love crapped cathulu mythos How come we don't got bands Inspired by the Stephen King mythos Like Dolores Claiborne or The Black House or fairy tale
Well at the very least, we've got a band that includes Stephen as one of its members: the Rock Bottom Remainders
Tim Sample rocked The Sun Dog.
Just re-read that a month ago. FOUR PAST MIDNIGHT has a murderer's row of audiobook narrators. Tim Sample, plus Willem Dafoe and James Woods.
@@TheStephenKingdom Don’t forget Ken Russel reading The Library Policeman. Great reading
Somebody let this man narrate an entire audiobook

@@SaharRazavi Thank you so much!
I'm so sick of David Foster Wallace. He was a boomer who somehow captured Gen X, but in his lifetime never came close to being as prolific. He is lifted up because he is dead. Stephen King, while I don't agree with him politically and he is a boomer stuck in adolescence, I even mocked him on Twitter. I respect his work as a writer in general; he can weave a yarn like no other.
Why did you mock him? What did you say?
Well stick around because we take plenty more digs at David Foster Wallace as our story unravels 😄
Arnt you the same guy who did the video on the shinning, but on a different channel?
Not that I know of, although I have talked about The Shining once or twice on this channel. And I wrote the episode about Stephen King for PBS's "It's Lit" that was hosted by Lindsay Ellis, so maybe that's it? Or maybe I'm a shapeshifter . . . I can neither confirm nor disconfirm that
I have a response for that question, he should say it's all autobiographical.
And honestly people would probably believe it
Thank you for that bit of humor toward the end about a haircut. It helped.
Glad you enjoyed that bit lol . . . had to lighten the mood just a little after that plunge into existential darkness
This guy is an actor right? looks familiar
Maybe from the indie thriller "Bullitt County"?
