DEMONS, IMAGINATION, AND MENTAL ILLNESS - M. Huth (University of Würzburg)
In late 16th-century Wittenberg, medical disputations explored supernatural mental states-lycanthropy, ecstasy, and witchcraft-linking them to demonic influence, disorders of phantasia, or both. Influenced by Aristotle, "phantasia", namely the faculty of imagination responsible for the connection between the mind and the senses, became central to understanding mental illness.
In this lecture, Manuel Huth traces the evolving discourse on "phantasia", contextualising it within contemporary theories and illustrating its role in rationalising seemingly supernatural mental phenomena.

Galen on Contagion and Material Imagination - B. Holmes (Princeton)
มุมมอง 89วันที่ผ่านมา
The concept of contagion in the learned Greek medical tradition has long been recognized as having an ambiguous status due to the challenges it poses to established aetiological strategies. One mark of this status is the referral of several paradigmatic infectious diseases to the primarily Peripatetic genre of “physical problems,” where they appear as cases of 'sympathy' ("sympatheia"). In this...

The Human Body According to al-Farabi - C. Martini Bonadeo (University of Padua)
มุมมอง 1722 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this lecture Prof. Cecilia Martini Bonadeo explores al-Fārābī’s physiological views exposed in the "Epistle on the Refutation of Galen" and "Principles of the Perfect City", where he presents the human body as a microcosm of the cosmos. Through these works, al-Fārābī connects medicine, physics, and political order, using the body’s structure as a model for an ideal society. Enjoy!

Ambroise Paré and His Context - E. Berger (Russian Academy of Sciences)
มุมมอง 602 หลายเดือนก่อน
Paré’s achievement in expanding the boundaries of the medical profession brought with it a new attitude towards surgery and surgeons. He insisted that surgery could now be regarded as equal to other branches of medicine, despite the fact that it was still divided into guilds and schools, relied occasionally on the help of barbers, and was not taught as a university subject. In this lecture, Ele...

Galen on Nutrition and Diet in the Roman Empire - J. Wilkins (Exeter)
มุมมอง 2866 หลายเดือนก่อน
Galen is one of the best sources on ancient nutrition and diet: he has little interest in luxury fashions, he records regular seasonal famines, and is at home in the fields talking to peasants as much as he is in the salons of his wealthy clients. In this lecture, Prof. John Wilkins explores Galen's treatises on Foods and Juices, and devles into his theory of the ‘similarity’ or ‘appropriatenes...

Interesting esoteric views of Roger Bacon. It is important to understand that all his "Christian" concepts were most likely used in the Gnostic, or perhaps Rosicrucian, sense, not in the literal Christian sense. This includes the symbols "God", "soul", "body", "death", "immortality", "eternity", "fire", "air", "water", "earth" etcetera. These terms, and many others, would be used in their esoteric sense and not in their exoteric sense by Bacon, in order to both conceal Knowledge from the foolish and the unworthy, and to simultaneously reveal this Knowledge to those who are both wise and humble. To Know the Mysteries of Heaven are given not to the People but only to the Disciples, as the Nazarene Master Jeshu once said.
Too quiet.
