Thornton-le-Street History Group launched its Heritage Lottery-funded archaeology and history project with an Open Day in the village hall in February 2017. The funding came from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and we would like to thank the Lottery players without whom this project would not have been possible. We completed the first phase of our project and our group continues promoting archaeology and history within the Vale of Mowbray in North Yorkshire. We are currently organising and hosting a series of online webinars. Follow us on eventbrite for more details.

Beningboroughs Rediscovered by Mark Newman, National Trust
มุมมอง 2633 ปีที่แล้ว
Beningbrough Hall, on superficial acquaintance, seems to be a straightforward, archetypal, early eighteenth century baroque country house and park. However, sustained archaeological and historical research by the National Trust has gradually revealed how unexpectedly complex Beningbrough’s previous lives have been, including discovery of a substantial lost seventeenth century gardened landscape...
Fin Cop

The Iron Age hillfort of Fin Cop dominates the landscape of Monsal Dale in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Dating to the late prehistoric period, hillforts can take many forms, and there has been considerable debate over how we should interpret such monuments: were they a defensive response to a warlike society? Were they conspicuous displays of wealth and power? As with all such ...

Wharram Percy in North Yorkshire is undoubtedly the best known deserted medieval village in Europe, made famous by decades of research and by the involvement of students and volunteers from around the world. It is also one of the best understood sites of its type, although only a fraction of the total area of the village has been excavated and many important questions have yet to be answered. N...
