Beige, white, grey, brown and black: even the colours in the central painting of the exhibition are indeterminate, because they are mixed together. This and the combination of different glazes, consistencies and mixing ratios constitute the motif. Or the motifs? COME AS YOU ARE
SABRINA FRITSCH feat. CPLY juxtaposes the artist’s most recent works with already familiar series. The result is a fascinating polyphony. The title is not a superficial invitation but could be supplemented as follows: Come (as many and as diverse) as you are.
Sabrina Fritsch’s work naturally oscillates between the concrete and the figurative. Formal questions and physicality intertwine and present themselves in their simultaneity as a common multiplicity. The process of finding the image is characterised by both coarse and fine structures. Fritsch creates these from materials such as velvet and sand, as well as from the painting itself. The resulting surfaces and filigree overlays have a playful effect. In this way, our perception repeatedly emerges as the actual core of the interactions. We are challenged to remain dynamic, to follow the rhythms of the compositions.
Sabrina Fritsch (b, 1979 in Neunkirchen/Saar, lives and works in Cologne and Düsseldorf where she is Professor of Painting at the Academy of Art) explores the potential of pictorial invention and the mechanisms of perception in her paintings. They often contain rough structures, textile surfaces and filigree overlays. The relationship of images to space is explored, as is the relationship of images to their supports. Her pictorial worlds are usually the result of a playful and analytical experimentation with formal conditions, whereby memories or an interest in the human body can also find their way into the motifs. Her work is represented in numerous private and public collections, including the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Folkwang Museum, Essen, the Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf and the Kunsthaus Nordrhein-Westfalen, Aachen.
