My Thoughts on X-Men: From the Ashes so far | Retro’s Thoughts
I HATE the Storm and Wolverine pairing, yes I love T'Challa and Ororo as a pairing for the same reasons u said plus we can name on 1 hand how many black couples we have, even when things are bad between them it feels like the writers are manufacturing a split opposed to servicing the plot, as of they've got a mandate to not have them together. That's all without discussing how Wolverine truly makes no sense as his best partner and vice versa and I am a big X head
I love that you gf have u these ideas all my best ideas get vetted by my lady
@@HopeEsthiem15 same bro LMFAO i’m glad cuz i somehow yapped my way to 29 mins on this one, she always got the best ideas
Personally for me Peter Parker Spider-Man and Mary Jane are a great marriage couple and having them be with their daughter mayday Parker spider-girl are amazing story and ten times better then this terrible Paul character that nobody liked myself included and personally I wanted Paul to go away and never ever comeback period at least in my opinion.
You’re so real for the Nightwing pick. That was my first time reading his books in single issues, and it’s stuck in my mind for a great new created love interest
@@ComicKrackle SAME here, i didnt mention it but that run was the first run i read after coming back to comics after some years, i really like it a lot
Nuclear fucking take, but Wally and Linda as a couple annoy me to no end. Just the constant regurgitation of "hurr durr yurr muh lightning rod" smooch smooch over and over again gets lame really quickly
@@theflashfan3234 LMFAO AYE YKW, i aint mad at this at all bro 😭😭😭
Thanks for watching y’all, I appreciate! Just wanted to let y’all know just in case y’all aint aware lol this is MY opinion, heavy emphasis on MY, this is all in fun with Valentine’s Day coming up, don’t take it too serious if I talk about your favorite couples!
Felicia has always said Peter is one of the most important people in her life. As a friend and Ex and Friends with Benefits. Even in her solo run by Jed Mackay Spidey has always helped her and has her back. And you can't deny the chemistry between them even when they are not dating they're always there for eachother
And she's currently in Joe Kelly's Spiderman run
The reason why she broke up with Peter was because it was too healthy. And this is the first time she's been in a healthy relationship so it was new and an unknown territory for her
I’m aware of why they broke up, i just don’t think their relationship was developed well at all lol
Wolverine only good as a quickie one night mistake is cracking me upppp 😭💀💀
@@chigotgames damn right he needa get tf on otherwise!
This new Nightwing run has me hooked and excited in a way I haven't been for a long long time man. You pretty much said everything I had in mind better than I could. Idk if you remember that short Jamal Campbell Nightwing story The Director but this new villain reminds me of that person they set up for the cliffhanger of that story. If that story thread ends up going nowhere I'd just like to headcanon that this new villain is that same guy but in a new outfit or something lol. Loved the video as always brother!
Been loving this series so far, the style is really cinematic and Mark Waid is the writer so I don't even have to say what I think of the writing. My only thing is that I don't know how this is going to fit in with Dixon's Robin Year One, especially with both stories taking place roughly around the same time (I think this one would take place just before that one, Gordon is meeting Robin for the first time here) and both stories having Harvey as a major villain. Loved the review bro!
Gonna have to check out Ram V's Tec, Bitter Root and Reckless after seeing this video. You know how biased I am about this but Nightwing the Untouchable is always the first comic I recommend any of my friends hahaha
Everything Batman I've read from Ed Brubaker (except Gotham Central I still have to read that one) has been gold. I know you mentioned Murderer/Fugitive but the first volume of his run was really really solid too. I also loved his Man Who Laughs story with the retelling of the first Joker confrontation (Doug Mahnke's art is always great too). Aside from that my favorite that not a lot of people talk about is Batman 423 but yeah as you mentioned there is a barrier with it being old. City of Crime is also super solid in my opinion. Great video man!
@@comforteagle1900 thank you!! And surprisingly i have not read City of Crime so def will, 423 is a great one for sure especially as one issue defining the character

I hated bendis superman run so much why mostly because he had ruined everything with Superman and my favorite family and my boy Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy and I miss my boy jon being his little 10 year old self and I miss Superman being with his family with his wife Lois lane and his son Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy so much, and it still drives me insane that bendis had the awful idea of having my boy Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy being tortured by a mad man like Ultraman for years and aged up for garbage stories like his awful legion book that nobody liked myself included and its also not fair that we lost basically my favorite team the super sons with Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as his little 10 year old self and Damian wayne robin just for bendis to write his awful young justice book and his awful interpretation of the superman family which was just crap on so many levels it ain't even funny but just sad and depressing in my opinion. Also the whole secret identity reveal was also a terrible idea that made no sense and was freaking garbage that i am glad was retconned out of existence and i was so happy about that, but unfortunately that change could be undone but nobody wants to retcon this stupid Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy aged up garbage and give us back the real Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy back to his little 10 year old self and i will never understand why DC won't undo this mistake in my opinion. In conclusion I am glad you enjoyed bendis superman run more then I did because at the end of the day we all have are own opinions. :)
These Superman discussions are just what I needed. I hope more people see them and get a new perspective. I didn't want to dive into this run because of how controversial it is.
I’m glad you liked it!! I had a lot of fun reading this and really had alot of thoughts, definitely got some more videos on big blue
I think when you see people hate on Bendis' run, you have to factor in peoples love for Supersons. Those people weigh the loss of that series to "was what Bendis did worth it?" It tips the scales. Plus its combined with his JL run and Naomi then compared to his Marvel work. People may have expected him to come to DC and create these universe changing events like his Marvel work. They look at all that and not just take the run for what it was on its own
@@williamceyrolles4914 i have to disagree, i remember when Bendis’s Superman was running, the hate was in full force and had nothing to do with his JL and Naomi series. And the thing with Supersons is that while yeah folks liked that run alot, i did as well, is it worth keeping a run that in turn forever locks two characters at a certain age? That title banked on them staying young. If Jon didn’t age up, Damian would possibly never have had one of the most meaningful character arcs he’s had since Morrison’s Batman. This forced the both of these characters to grow up. I do wish Jon’s treatment post-Bendis was handled better tho
As a 55 year reader of Superman (I have every issue of Action since 401 and #228 of the first Superman title, I respectfully disagree, but totally believe in everyone liking what they like unapologetically! I really respect you putting out something on YT as a new creator that is going to be contrary to the mainstream opinion. I do agree Bendis was better than Tom Taylor writing Jon, but that’s a low bar for me! I will be checking out more videos!
@@atomichound1868 that’s completely fair! and i agree it’s a low bar but about the only other bar I can compare it to unfortunately Preciate the support nonetheless, hope you like em!
I love when people dive deeper into underrated runs. Subbed. Keep it up man 💯
@@YuhooComicReview thank you!!
giving Bendis a compliment always feels off, but is it a lie tho lol
@@HopeEsthiem15 i guess i understand some of the sentiment, his time at DC isnt looked upon well, but as someone who became a fan of him from his early 00s stuff, he’s always someone that deserves a chance to me lol
Bendis is overhated. He reinvented Spider-Man for the 21st century with his ultimate run and made Avengers into a household name in comics. He doesn’t wasn’t to write safe stories
@@opposite_hedgehog_753 and never should
@@RetroReviewsComicsI was once a hater because I heard nothing but bad things. But I’m amazed there is critical revaluations of the run and I read it and I’m shock how well done it was and how mature the story feels and have interesting original ideas. I think people hated it because how it took away Tomasi’s run
bendis and peter j tomasi run is so great it makes read superman comics non stop u gotta read busiek run too bro it's also underrated and please make a video about it
@@rafsedelic2534 I’ve read Busiek’s! Was going to make a video but decided to just talk about that era of Superman as a whole instead!
I've never read this run but I've about the many controversial things from it. Like it being the reason John got aged up? Definitely intrigued by this video.
@@Comicbroe405 i always say give something a chance with an open mind first, especially when its written by a creator as prolific as Bendis
@@RetroReviewsComics Yeah definitely agree with that mindset.
I think Bendis got overhated during his run because he did what he does best: Break the status quo, and find a unique perspective on a character. It won’t work for everyone, but if you’re trying to pleasing everyone, you did something wrong.
@@ComicKrackle You goddamn right, he’s one of the few remaining creators who pushes a character so far that it forces them to grow, he’s never been afraid to shake shit up, and i will always respect him for that
COOOKKKKKK!! 👨🏾🍳
@@chigotgames thank you thank you 🫶🏽🫶🏽
Honestly, especially when it comes to Batman comics, I think the best way to get someone hooked is to just give them a random back issue that's part 3 of 6 or something like that. You read it having no clue what came before, no clue what came after, and a bunch of stuff and characters get referenced that you have no context for. And I think that setup can really encourage people to go around and build their knowledge based on wanting to understand a random reference that interested them.
@@anthonyfiordaliso5689 thats lowkey how i feel about most popular comic titles tbh

Great content. Dope shirt. Ultimate Black Panther has been really good, Ultimate Spider-Man has been decent but slow, and I’m late to the Ultimates but it’s been phenomenal.
great list! i recommend working Peter J. Tomasi's Batman and Robin in alongside Snyder's run and the end of Morrison's run, also want to say i get why its controversial but Tom King's run is definitely worth reading at least once, and James Tynion IV's Detective Comics run that ran alongside it is excellent (better than Tynion's Batman run imo)
@@sodasalesman6822 Agreed! Tom King i didnt go too much into because I’m gonna make a video on that but def agree with the Tomasi/Gleason B&R, very fun run

Wasn’t it Azrael who was Batman in knightfall saga, not nightwing?
@@OhItsLuCa they both were. Azrael was Batman until Knightsend. And often the KnightsEnd and Knightfall collections include Prodigal and thats when Nightwing was Batman.
@ oh interesting, thanks. I read knightfall/quest/end but skipped prodigal and went to contagion
@ No problem! Prodigal and Troika are really fun sorta epilogue stories for that saga
I think someone starting Batman should read Dark Moon Rising and The Man who Laughs after Year One, since they all connect between each other and Year One, maybe also some issues of Legends of the Dark Knight since they are set in Batman early years
@@ThiagoDebeste something I will talk about a lil more in depth in another video but yeah, some good stuff there and both of the Wagner Batman series I actually just read recently
My absolute favorite Batman villain is Ra’s al Ghul, so The Lazarus Affair (1981, Batman 332-335, uncollected as yet, I believe), Son of the Demon (fantastic), Bride of the Demon, and Birth of the Demon (not as good in my opinion, but still worthwhile, especially with Birth giving, I believe, the first origin of Ra’s).
@@charlesross6963 lot of the O’Neil stuff outside of the Neal Adams collections are hard to find but lots of really good stories here tho
Impressive catalog. Looks like I'm going to comic shop next week 😊
@@RyanMcCarthy826 love to see it 👏🏽👏🏽
While I respect your opinion, I find it interesting so many informed comic book readers have such a negative opinion of Hush. It’s the equivalent of a Fast and Furious installment (the very best ones), a blockbuster whose main plot thread (who is Hush?) exists just to bring all (or most) of Batman’s foes and friends together to explore his relationships with them. The story can only go so deep because of how much is squeezed in and how fast it moves. The actual climax and resolution of the mystery is rather anticlimactic and underwhelming - the story peaks with the Jason Todd/Clayface confrontation in the penultimate issue. But the story does a great job of showing a new reader why Batman rules (the opening few pages are an amazing introduction of Batman as if seeing him for the first time) and this story ushered in the modern era of the Bat-God, as Grant Morrison would call him
@@JesseMurphyactor i think the negativity comes more so from it’s popularity than it’s role as a book, at least thats how i see it. It’s a fine comic, but in general there are plenty other books that do a better job and it’s not even the best Hush story, that goes to Hearts of Hush. It deserves it spot and its why i included it, but there are just stronger stories out there
I'm with you. Hush was the comic that got me into the main DC canon when I started reading comics. I think people miscalculate its value as a story. No, it's not a Hush story. But it is an excellent primer for everything Batman in the modern age right before Jason and Damian entered the picture. You can follow every major Batman storyline from there into the present.
I like the character's concept because it's a brilliant callback to the end of the Killing Joke but I think the stories where he's featured and the writing for him specifically arent as good
@@miikaaeeel thats fair enough!
Great video, honestly surprised when I checked the sub count that there wasn't a k at the end of that 168, criminally underrated

thank you - why i came to comment. must reads for comic fans in general let alone batman fans. truly transcendent of the genre.
The Untold Legend of the Batman is a good starting point for new readers in my opinion. It is a great recap of Batman and his relationship to his villains. The story has a well plotted mystery, with fascinating secrets to be revealed!

@@Comicbroe405 Morrison hasnt a touched a character they can’t write, I know some folks hate their Talia, but it’s a mistake they’ve long apologized for so it is what it is
You forgot to include All Star Batman and Robin! 😆 (just kidding, don't hate me in the comments). Great list though! I am a little surprised The Dark Knight Returns or The Killing Joke are not mentioned but it hasn't aged as well for some people, so I can kind of understand. Also think Gotham by Gaslight should be an honorable mention.
@@jaybee414-d1l Lol I did consider adding TDKR, but i do think those stories have TOO much clout, everyone pretty much knows them, I really wanted to shine some light on runs and stories that don’t get mentioned much at all. Gotham by Gaslight is fucking great tho, I general was staying away from elseworld stories tho
There's a lot of bad things in the New 52 (I'm talking to you, Wonder Woman), but also, the New 52 is what got me into reading DC. Green Lantern is my favorite DC character and he stayed the same before and during the New 52 because Geoff Johns was the main writer, but still, he was amazing. The Justice League wasn't very successful before the New 52, but it became the flagship title during this era. Batman was pretty much the same before the New 52 because of Grant Morrison. People call the New 52 a failure, but to honest, it sold more than anything DC has ever done before the New 52. Because it was a reboot, it was a fresh start (except for Green Lantern and Batman, they stayed the same and the only thing that changed was how they met, and their suits design). But honestly, when it comes to New 52 Superman, I really hated his relationship with Wonder Woman, just...WHY DID THEY HAVE TO BE A COUPLE ?.
@@ervingarcia874 they’re relationship sucked but thats such a small part of that era i dont really care 😭
Morrisons Batman and Robin is one of my all time favorites too. Frank Quietlys art in the first arc is some of the best and fits the story perfectly
Awesome Batman reading order! But a little correction about Heart of Hush, that under the cowl of Batman is still Bruce Wayne! One of the great Dark Knight stories featuring Dick Grayson is Scott Snyder's Batman Black Mirror.
