I met Hate Man in a Lower East Side laundromat in 1972. He was a refreshing change from the gruff New Yorkers I encountered. After I moved to the SF Bay Area, we met occasionally.I enjoyed photographing him.

I knew Hate when I was a street kid in '93. I used to push him for cigarettes. The first time I ever had a conversation with him, he said the most important word in life is "Care".
