A 5 minute sample from a longer interview of "Hate Man" who has been living in and near People's Park since the end of the '60's. In this section he discusses the conflict between the "authentic individual" who has become a street person, and the group, represented by the City of Berkeley and the University of California.

I sat on a piano stool with this man once, at La Ripaille in Manhattan, a genius pianist and kind soul who could play the entire American canon from scratch. He also picked up the giant tab. Randy Carmichael is a beautiful human being. ❤

I met Hate Man in a Lower East Side laundromat in 1972. He was a refreshing change from the gruff New Yorkers I encountered. After I moved to the SF Bay Area, we met occasionally.I enjoyed photographing him.

I knew Hate when I was a street kid in '93. I used to push him for cigarettes. The first time I ever had a conversation with him, he said the most important word in life is "Care". He said you can't hate someone, or love someone, unless you care about them. He said the worse thing is not HATING others. The worse thing is to not CARE about others.

Hey do you by chance remember Brenda she came to peoples park with three runaways. She’s the one that found hate man’s doll. She used to sleep by the church across the road and also on top of the little roof by the bathroom. I don’t remember what her nickname was but her real name was Brenda. She did a lot of acid and drink a lot back then. Do you know her by chance? If you do please contact me on Instagram @rocco.acab

Hateman was very important and losing him meant losing peoples park , a place he held down as a base. His other spots were cooler like garage on Dwight. But later on Hate slept amongst the people and was respected and loved by all creed. A true superhuman That will missed

Talking cock-suckers, RIGHT THIS WAY! Fall 1973, LA Times Online's Robin Abcarian approached me and Toni Ratner, at Wheeler, right before class, to announce she did a Stones tour date in SoCal, whereupon Keith Richards roamed the tits, swinging in the front row, for females, inclined to moves like Jagger, same time as he makes 'em, SO? Robin was a frogette, fluent in French, so Robin found out the Stones were waiting in southern French villas for me to tune up by the snack table, or no five hit albums, 1971-1973, and all the way through MIXED EMOTIONS. Or Mick doesn't get out, nine years after: "IF IT'S A BUBERIAN? SEND IT TO ME!" Robin had 'em, honey-bear-titty-fanciers, Toni had knockers, I liked to aim at 'em, so I got talked into hanging with Toni, for some reason in Po, since she wasn't tricking a lot in town, or her and her other ho galpal Alison in Paris, 1976, their junior year, out fucking. RIGHT BEFORE THE BIZ WHIPPED OUT VAN HALEN, to trump the crap out of my sound. What's taking you whores so long to admit there's concert dangers, over playing MY hits, since Bataclan, re Filipino bangers and Fab Mab+? CAL 1973 pre-Haas bus.adm., Reagan siggie degree wasn't worth the trouble, still brewing. You do NOT go to Berkeley, when none of you got it Brock Turner AND his Swedes AND his drunk girl AND Jose AND Kate Steinle are ALL MUJAHIDIN, little fuzzy retards, in or contemplating fucking things up WORSE, in Berkeley, while inciting riot, AROUND THE CAL-PUNKED WORLD, so there's trouble around ME. undiscovered by corporate media, courts, and suppressed, in shitty Berkeley, still trying to queer-racketeer me, with punks out of CAL. SO SUSPECTED ISLAMIST ATTACKS AROUND OPPRESSION OF MY PERSON GO ALL THE WAY, BACK TO THE 2002 SANTANA ROW FIRE, punks who suck Neil Schon gnads, while all the Catholic scuds could do without MY guitar is way short of RATT or JOURNEY, more like Tommy James and the Shondells, is as far as they get, without ripping me. So a common trick is to move my riff, to keyboards, to put out shitty muzak or Brit-shit. You don't go to Berkeley, you don't attend CAL, you don't hook up where 8 and 1/2 is gonna get some help, from BLOW UP, and when this happens? Ain't any more CAL, hos! You go to CAL, if you have a scholarship, to study why Fukushima happened, and then, there's gonna be diarrhea and fatal episodes, for your egregious displays of local corruption. Mr.Sluggo at Cruz will always be 17 shots over your lousy heads, at this. YOU WILL BE HATED, AND YOU WILL FAIL. Avoid Stanford, also, unless you cop fellowship. See all the HATE MAN schtick? It's leading to Mark Hawthorne's final moments, April 2017. Hate BOY? No wonder ciggie-smoking Mark's gone, now. That was probably a concession. Mark Hawthorne has a mountain named after him. WHERE IS IT, KIDDIES? A: ANT-fucking-ARCTICA. Fuck you! Reply to a former Barrington Hall resident, re BEASTIE BOYS: You know when FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT was ripped? It was when I had the Gibby out at Vince McGovern's Palo Alto flat. I was trying to get him to play, but he kept dragging, since he knew AC-ZZ were ripping me, since hey. I was a Barringtonian, with Castro guys, and we were on KT's Aerial Circus teams, like actually won B-league, one year, with a lot of participation, at all sports. Vince is a WAY better athlete, than shit on stage. Fastest of all circus players. Best-looking, too, so when he sagged? I knew Kenny Tucker gobbing smack about having moves like Jagger would probably get ripped and Lt.Dan-o'd, as in the movies would nail Lt. Dan with a lot of guys I knew or would meet, like Kenny Tucker, with a patch on his left eye. Gary Sinise does peculiars, like my IM guys, Judge Vogt of Frezberg, etc. And Vince McGovern, playing drums, like he had NO LEGS, that one night, last time I saw him. ALL IN GUMP. So what do YOU know about Pink Cloud? He took my Washburn that I couldn't play on accounta I am a electric git in the 1970s who couldn't play acoustic but for wandering. So Cloud gets good turnarounds, up for Banjo Bitch, who as MaryAnn Watts wasn't letting me tune the Washburn to her banjo, so I could get it about acoustic, with a more experienced performer. Which wasn't happening at electric guitar, since I picked it up and BLASTED. ALL OF YOU. OFF THE STAGE, so the corporations put up PRETENDERS. AND AC-ZZ. And you go see U2 or Eags? You deserve Adam's bomb. Hear the birds, g.f. They know where the Beasties stole guitar riffs. And George Lucas used Pink (Ronald Richard Brown) Cloud as the nexus to hire Carrie Fisher as Leia, with Mark Hamill as Luke because he evoked MaryAnn Watts, on banjo, and the both evoked The KINKS ripping me off to do LOLA. See the shape of Pinko's FACE? Now compare, to Carrie Fisher. She had to put out for Jabba and his schnauzer buddy or something, to get Cloud. YOU AND YOUR SMACK ARE STILL UNDER SURVEILLANCE, g.f.
