I love the alteration at the end. The book just shows he melted. But in this one, the boy, credited as "James", finds the scarf in his pocket that he got from Santa. Its kinda melancholy, but he realises it wasnt all a dream; the snowman may have gone, but that little adventure he had was real.

So I’ve seen the comments about the tall ghost being William Hill who bricked himself into the wall and was poppy’s husband, but there’s another part that (I think) happened. He had an affair with Mr. Dudley’s mom (the woman who takes Abigail’s hand in ep. 9. The guilt of that was a big factor in why he bricked himself in, or at least that’s what I’ve read.

Peter Auty sang "Walking in the air" for The Snowman animated movie. He was a member of the St Paul's Cathedral choir but his name was not put into the closing credits until 20yrs after. The reason Aled Jones recorded the song was after the film's music score made a big success "Walking In The Air" needed recording to be sold as a record but Auty's voice had broken. So they found another choirboy who was from Bangor Cathedral choir and suddenly Aled Jones was the vocal hero. Listen to the two of them. Aled Jone's sang it on Top of The Pops. In my opinion Peter Auty is more pure and almost haunting..

But this was the 80s when kids knew if they were a boy or a girl and people didn't get offended because the snowman was too white 🤷🏻‍♂️

This film is a masterpiece and teaches children a very important lesson about life (and loss). Raymond Briggs' book is an absolute classic :) The ending is perfect and a sanitised version (which you've proposed) would've been awful lmao.

It is a choir boy, Peter Auty of the London St Paul’s Cathedral choir. However, he sadly doesn’t get the credit. In 1985, Welsh chorister Aled Jones recorded a version of the song and it got to No.5 in the charts, and likely due to Auty not being credited as the singer in the film’s credits, it’s led to a common misconception that Jones sung it in the film.

My dad used to make put this on for me at Christmas as a kid, having lost his own father on Christmas day to a heart attack while he was still a child he understood the message behind this film better than most. Just finished watching it with my own son for the first time.

Hahaha, yeah regarding the ending - Welcome to the 80s! XD There were a lot of shows 'for kids' that had brutal moments back then (I see someone else suggested 1978's 'Watership Down', I would also highly recommend that). That being said, the sad ending makes the joy of rewatching it so special. Believe me, I have seen it countless times throughout my life and love every second of it, even though I know I am probably (definitely) going to be glassy eyed by the end. :) Glad you enjoyed it!

There was another video called Father Christmas, which was done by the same people. And at the point when he comes to the snowman party, he sees the boy and the snowman again, and he says the words “I’m glad you made it again and I’m not meaning just a snowman!” which I think gave lovely closure to it. Meaning that every Christmas he could remake the snowman, so it wasn’t a complete goodbye.
