Of Sound Mind Dialogues: An Introduction (with Garrett Oyama & Nina Kraus)
The following is a preamble to a series of dialogues discussing Professor Kraus's book, Of Sound Mind: How our Brain Constructs a Meaningful Sonic World. This is Professor Kraus and I speaking about ideas in the book more broadly, but our hope is to help clarify and expand upon the ideas in this book chapter by chapter.

Nina Kraus & Charles Limb ARO 2016: Music in Mind - with American Sign Language Interpreter
I have an auditory processing delay and growing up, I really struggled with processing speech. After I became a musician, it completely changed and my social skills significantly improved. I had always suspected that music was the reason ❤ music saved me and gave my life purpose.
Loved this conversation! Some standout ideas from this chat: - People's rich background over the boundaries of several fields can lead to innovation. It may have been that Iain McGilchrist 's understanding of the brain as a clinician and researcher led him to insights into the hemispheres of the brain. - Music is fundamental to humans and not completely separate from language. There isn't a big distinction between infant musical and speech vocalizations. - Metaphor is embedded so deeply in our language that we forget it is a tool for understanding. There isn't parity, for instance, between a computer/machine and the brain. Looking forward to reading Of Sound Mind :)
Excellent

Great info, loved the song!!❤️6
Very interesting! How would the ffr of an allucinatory input in schizophrenic patients be like?
As an autistic person and also a musician i would have some questions for Dr. Nina Kraus
Thanks, nina, for pointing me to your site.
Mind Blowing 😮 🧠
My Mom is Dr. Patricia Scherer. She told me all about her time with you discussing the benefits of music even with deaf children. I love hearing how you have continued your research. Music is so powerful!
Headbanger here. Watched this whole thing (which was great) but its got nothing to do with headbanging.
what is the EFR?
Unethical ELF brain torture?
Startling, no less! Tracked this down via the Brainvolts site after reading Prof Kraus excellent book 'Of Sound Mind'. Would like to know whether the subject was listening to live voice or to a loudspeaker. Tried playing the versions in parallel: the sync and total length match except for just a couple of brief delays on peaks in the brain version. How very odd!
As an elementary general music teacher, I’m excited to learn the neurological benefits of musical training but frustrated by the limitations of my own program. I see my students once a week for 40 min. (K-5th grade) and my students have no way to practice at home on the between days. Our reading scores are abismal across the board, and I’d love to help maximize their cognitive development. What can I do given the inmate limitations of my schedule?
As an elementary general music teacher, I’m excited to learn the neurological benefits of consistent musical training but also frustrated by the limitations of my own program. I see my students once a week for 40 min. (K-5th grade). Our reading and math scores are abismal across the board, and I’d love to help them improve. I can’t duplicate the Harmony Project, provide instruments for them to take home, or even meet my students several days per week. What can I do in my weekly general music lessons to enhance their cognitive development, in spite of these limitations?
Brilliant. thanks for the talk and for sharing your enthusiasm about the subject with us!

Found the Brainvolts site via Nina Kraus's recent superb book - Of Sound Mind. If you love sound, or music, or science, or take a keen interest as I do in hearing/psychology/education... well it is a must read. Rarely is a brilliant researcher also such a great writer. Disclaimer: I'm not connected or rewarded in any way!
I don't quite understand about gender differences? How global are they? Like, if I'm a man, do I hear music worse or what (Harmonics, etc.)? Not only does this offend me, but Krizman's research contradicts a number of data that frequency discrimination in men is better than in women. Or I don't understand something. Please explain.
Stop being so easily offended
This is incredibly interesting! Thank you so much for sharing keep up the amazing research :))
Impressive presentation. Thank you for all your work and advancing the field in such an impactful manner. Thank you also for all your efforts to make this knowledge accessible to clinicians. Some day soon, FFR will be a standard component of an audiological assessment.
More than inspiring - this misted me up when Dr Kraus highlighted the power of music to develop children's minds. Here in UK, schools music provision is patchy, to put it politely. How lucky we were, 60 years ago, that music was on our secondary school curriculum - a follow up to weekly Music and Movement from BBC radio in primary school. We had a full time music teacher (r.i.p. kindly Mr 'Horse' Blumsen, Dansette and all). He loved Holst, while we were more into skiffle - but that created valuable discussion. l Dr Kraus' audible playback of brain signals is jaw-dropping! I hope folk will Share this YT with teachers, musicians, influencers. As she says, "The healthiest thing we can do for our brains is to make music".
If cats purr at 100Hz. Then I'd rather be a cat living in Europe with a power frequency of 50Hz humming around me. :-)
The western world is the new cancer to our planet. All countries are infected with pop music in 4/4 time and equal tempered tuning (sells a lot of plastic electronic keyboards). Really sickening. Whatever happened to imagination? Will imagination eventually become forbidden?

Awesome channel!! 🙂 Keep up the good work! Why aren’t you using promosm!? Lot’s of channels are using it to promote their videos.

God I wish I could work on researching smth like this. Connecting neuroscience and music... This is so awesome! Off to read all of your papers)
Thank for this info. Could u give me a email. I'd really like to listen to the sounds please and thank u
This is incredibly interesting for musicians
Thank you Dr. Nina. You mentioned your website 19:20, can you please spell out the URL? I'd love to learn more 🙏

The first few sentences of this just changed me, ‘I was more comfortable across boundaries’ wow helps me explain so much about my own experience, that had created a bit of a war in me in the past, thank you professor kraus
this is awesome thank you for this! I strongly believe in the 2 year rule. Athletes make the best musicians!!!!
Fascinating video! Please share more. This was so enlightening.
Really enjoyed this speech. Very informative. Thank you.
the sound is choppy
can I work with you ?
Awesome! The audience loved it, too!
Good job and thanks for tje caps. Im french and I could see that Google's artificial intelligence could not translate words into a noisy environment either too.
I found this to be very interesting and informative! I'm doing a presentation tomorrow at school for my senior project and I chose Music Education as my topic. I really appreciate these videos and I've also come to admire Dr. Kraus's work as well!
Thank you! Wonderful work you share!
Never thought just how the brain deals so fast with sounds. For the first time I am hearing sounds I had forgotten due to buying very sophisticated hearing aids.
Gostaria deu uma legenda em português.
Esta investigación es muy interesante, quiere decir que la buena música puede evitar el deterioro cognitivo.
Great content. Keep it up!
WTF she got on? Audio only i guess hells bells. Great info nonetheless
Like it keep going on
