เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 4 มี.ค. 2021
Rhymney Virtual Tours is a compilation of historical and current views and information on the development of the Town of Rhymney, Caerphilly County Borough, formerly the counties of Monmouthshire and Gwent in South Wales. The series of videos provide a virtual walk through of Rhymney using Google Earth Street Scenes, aerial mapping, together with still map captures of Tithe maps, and Ordnance Survey Maps stored by the National Library of Wales Archive and ArchiUK historical maps.
The videos trace the development of the Town of Rhymney from 1800 onward. They show the significant contribution of the Rhymney Ironworks Company, established 1835, and the Rhymney Railway. In addition to these companies, the Rhymney Brewery that later was named the Andrew Buchan Brewery.
The videos also show growth for the communities of Pontlottyn, Abertysswg, Fochriw, New Town (Butetown), Tirphil, New Tredegar, Phillipstown, Brithdir, Princetown, Tarfanaubach, and Tredegar, through social news reports.

I've grown up in Rhymney so have seen everything here. Takes me back to my youth to see all the old buildings that are not there of have been converted.
My family originated in Rhymni. They moved in the 1860's to Middlesbrough. My great great great grand-parents were John Abraham and Eliza Caswell. All my family from then on were iron and steel workers at Dorman Long and Bolckow and Vaughan. They made the steel for the Victoria Falls Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. My grandma and my mam always said we were Welsh. We had a National Bible in the house and my grandma taught me phrases and to count in Welsh
Another great thing I remember from the 60s is that on one stretch of main road, it was mostly the backsteps of terraced houses. The town had so many narrow coal seams, that old miners needed to sit on the back steps of these houses to relax their stomach muscles in the evenings; usually whilst also having a smoke. That will have gone a long time ago, no doubt, but I wonder whether any one ever recorded it on film!?
Most interesting! Are ponies and sheep still using the panda crossing south of the town centre? Never seen anything so funny in my life, the way they used to put one foot on the crossing and very sensibly wait for the traffic to stop. If it still happens, it should be recorded! ;-) But you certainly have picked an interesting topic here.
i wonder how many families have died in the modern war of pretending our society isn't being Massively "Managed" by erm.. "lodge brethren". i think we're going to need a larger memorial.
Thanks mate for all the time and effort you put in to these videos. My Great Uncle, James Henry Gittins, was mentioned in this video as he is on the Rhymney memorial. Some info- When James Henry Gittins was born in 1893 in Rhymney, Monmouthshire, his father, Samuel, was 42 and his mother, Hannah, was 37. He had eight brothers and one sister. He died on 12 May 1915 whilst charging enemy lines in France at the age of 22. Rhymney War Memorial states - Gittins, James Henry, Private 10838. Died 12/05/1915. South Wales Borderers. Buried Lillers Communal Cemetery. Unfortunately, his war records incorrectly name him as "Gittens" with some amendments pointing to his correct surname of Gittins.
Fascinating stuff. I know Rhymney very well. My father worked in the Rhymney Urban District Council Office building, shown in your video. He was Chief Financial Officer there, until his untimely death in 1955, aged 40. He never recovered from his wartime activities. His name was Hugh Haydn Roberts. My family were due to move to Rhymney shortly before his death but we remained in Bedwellty Road, Aberbargoed. My teenage years were spent in Rhymney, playing football for Rhymney Youth and going to dances at the rugby club, with their resident group…..Ricky and the Crossfires. I remember the brewery very well and quaffed many a pint of PMA, after Whitbread took it over. We thought Rhymney was “posh” ….at least compared to where we lived. Many of my friends from Rhymney attended Bedwellty Grammar School with me and I still remember the girls very clearly. I won’t name any because I haven’t got permission but they were gorgeous, in my humble opinion. One gave me my first ever kiss, and had to give me some tips as I was clueless. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a prettier girl. My maths teacher, Wilfred Williams lived right next to Beulah Chapel, where he worshipped. We didn’t get on at all, probably due to my inability to understand any mathematics, despite my father having been a qualified chartered accountant! I was his worst ever pupil. My birth certificate names Rhymney as the parish. I owe it so much because it gave me friendship and so much more. I drove through recently and was greatly saddened to see so many houses and shops boarded up. Thank you for this video. It brought back memories of my grandad (Taid) teaching me Welsh words and Sol Fa! Best wishes, John Huw Roberts, Worcestershire.
Thank you for your comment. I regret a little late seeing it. Rhymney has changed.
Where can I find the 1841 map online please?
Thank you. ArchiUk has a number of early maps.
