He lies why he/they wrote the book. They wrote the book because they were fired, plain and simple. If it was truly because of Elvis' drug use, they could have/would have written the book much sooner. Then he recorded the conversation with Elvis who basically begged him not to publish the book and then published the recording. TRAITOR. Elvis trusted these men and they betrayed him.

Great, hilarious film but they couldn’t get a better looking guy to play Elvis ! Michael Shannon a fine actor but nobody, especially women, would swoon over Shannon ! Johnny Depp would have been a better choice ! Even a young Richard Grieco or Pierce Brosnan !

I was at the June 9 friday night performance at MS.G. I sat in the 4th row right to Elvis's left. The audience was wound up.Chanting and stomping there feet "ELVIS, ELVIS,ELVIS he had a wooden barrier about 10 yards from his stage to protect him and the band. The fucking place almost ripped the comedian off the stage because everyone wanted Elvis. He looked scared shitless and walk off before his bit was done, he's lucky the riot squad had to come in and push the women back from the barrier, Elvis would, through a scarf and the women would beat the shit out of each other and the cops would billyclubs them, it was great to see these broads going ape shit at each other. Red and Sonny had to come out on stage that night to protect Elvis. He never saw it coming and either did Sonny or Red. What happened.

There was no mistake made in Elvis not touring Europe and this is why. Elvis could not come to Europe to Tour because of the Drugs, the Guns and the size of the venues. Most European Countries, if not all of them, would not have allowed Elvis and his entourage to enter their countries fully armed as they were and with the amount of guns they carried. Elvis would have had to have had Dr Nick inform the countries exactly what drugs he was bringing into them and also the amounts, that would have caused a scandal right off the bat. While today we can enjoy many supersized venues at the time of the sixties and seventies these venues did not exist and neither did any venue the size of those today exist. Because of Elvis' popularity he would have had to have spent months in one country before moving onto the next and so on and so on. The overheads would have been astronomical Out of the Memphis Mafia Clique had that formed (Billy, Lamar, Marty, Sonny & Red West) I always liked Red West the most because he appeared the most genuine, but he too was prone to exaggerating and whether he liked it or not, he was party to a book that was reported by those who were with Elvis at the time had deeply hurt Elvis and he did it for money, only later did he add it was to help Elvis. There is no love in the book, it felt like there was vengeance at its heart; a desire to hurt Elvis as much as they were hurting and given those reports, it had worked. Do I think Red regretted the book? Yes, I think he did. Do I think Red stopped loving Elvis because of what he had had to say in the book? No. But he still shouldn't have been party to it - and he shouldn't have recorded and made public a private conversation he had had with Elvis either - most especially because Elvis would have been unaware of him doing it

    • @edbigtruck

West implies that he was let go because he tried to stop the pills. He didn't say how Elvis bought them and their wives separately several expensive cars, horses, motorbikes, medical expenses, flights including personal ones for wives, houses, holidays etc. He said nothing about how the West cousins were unnecessary violent towards some fans and Elvis had to pay hundreds of thousands dollars. He said nothing about how for several years after Elvis's death they mocked and lied about Elvis( on TH-cam is video proving how he lied) plus sneering at and insulting those that remained loyal to Elvis. When they realized after years of insulting and mocking Elvis, that Elvis's fans remained loyal to him and they didn't destroy his reputation, they then suddenly loved him again and they were the "true" Memphis Mafia.

In another interview Red West said that Elvis would not have been as famous if he had started out in the nineties because according to him Elvis made an impact because he moved his leg. That was total rubbish. I'm from South Africa and we were Elvis fans for years because of his records and only after years when we saw him for the first time in a movie, Jailhouse Rock. Furthermore check on TH-cam people who were born decades after his death doing reactions on his songs and were blown away by his talents, voice control, delivering the songs, singing as if he meant those words and then became fans themselves.

Wow, great interview. I'm aways surprised when people ask them about the book. Have these people read it? Obviously not. I have and 90% of it is very favorable to Elvis. It's sad to me that the MM has to answer for his death. Elvis was a grown man. It's his fault that he took drugs and died. The MM did all they could and more. RIP Red.

13:43 Brilliant scene. Anybody who knew Elvis said that he knew how to talk to civilians, or as he called them 'normals'. He had a gift for making other people feel special. I like how the guard explains that it 'may take a few days' and Elvis just chuckles knowing his cultural icon status will get him whatever he wants, whenever he wants it "Ha ha ha, the normal expects me to wait." Incredibly complex man, one of the most complex men of the 20th century.

This should have been a mini series on Netflix or Hulu. When Elvis went to see Nixon, he was fighting with his father and wife Priscilla over money. Elvis left the house for the first time on his own since 1956 or something like that. He flew to DC first, then to LA to see Jerry. While in LA, Jerry had to work so Elvis took a walk though the neighborhood. So much more happened. There is another movie called, "Elvis Meets Nixon" which has a lot if personal stuff of Elvis. There is a three hour town hall on where Jerry and Sonny West talk about the day Elvis met Nixon. They are both worth watching
