Krithi: Kaarana Madhaga

Raagam: Sindhu Bhairavi
Thaalam: Khanda Jaathi Thirupadai Thaalam
The thirupugazh is Arunagirinadhar's plea to Lord Murugan for the redemption from the influence of karma on birth, to request to be free from the effects of time ( symbolised as Kala) so as to attain a state of eternal consciousness, liberation and union with the divine. It describes Lord Murugan's profound and transformative dance of wisdom as something that enthrals Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu, the beings of wisdom and divine beauty. The hymn concludes with describing Lord Murugan as Devayani's husband, with 6 faces and 12 eyes, Velavaa (another name for Lord Murugan), victorious in battles and standing radiant like his spear (Vel) on the hills of Pazhamudhircholai.

Thanks for the feature SRJ Studio! 🙏🏽
No worries Roshini, great to collaborate with you!
Great work guys! Looking forward to seeing how the full video comes out.
Great work Balaram!
Hi! Could you maybe please make a video explaining how to play dhin/dheem because I can get the sound but my fingering is not good (According to my teacher)
Hi there, and thank you for your interest in our videos. Dhin especially is a complicated stroke, played quite differently by different schools of mridangam. It is probably most straightforward for you to ask your teacher about this, to ensure that the fingering you learn is consistent with your school's style of play. They can also then correct any issues in real time. All the best!
Nice performance
Thank you for your kind words.

Thanks Uncle.
Sir please tell how play this nadai and finger tips One video
Hi there, thanks for your interest, the fingering has been described in one of the other comments below.
Fingers solunga
Hi there, thanks for your interest. In terms of the fingering for the original phrase ('thaangu dheengu dhin'), this is num- ki dhin- ki dhin. 'Thom kita thaka dheengu dhin' is the same, except that the 'num- ki' is replaced by 'num kita thaki'. The most suitable ending options are 'num kita thaka thom kita thaka thom tha' (num kita thaki num kita thaki thom ki) as demonstrated in this video, or 'num kita thaka thaangu thom kita thaka' (num kita thaki num ki num kita thaki). Adding in coordination of the left hand with the right is a little complex, and often varies between different players. It is easier to learn this one-on-one with an experienced mridangam teacher, preferably face-to-face or (if not possible) online. They may also be able to show you other similar lessons, and modify the above fingering so that it is consistent with the style (bani) that you play. Hope that helps and all the best!
Nice work Balaram, great clarity!
Do we use this for misra chappu as there are 28 beats (4 cycles)?
Hey Harsith! Yeah so the 28 counts actually refers to the number of mathirais (sub-beats). There are four sub-beats per beat in Chathusra Nadai, hence they're seven-beat theermanams. So yeah if you start them from Samum in Misra Chapu, it'll finish perfectly after two cycles (3.5 + 3.5). Try see if you can put thaalam for it, and ask Balaram if you need help with that: once you can say them with thaalam then you can easily play them all with confidence.
Great song and great accompaniment
Thanks Harsith! We've now included a link to the full video just above the video title, feel free to have a go playing along! It's pretty quick, so if need be you can reduce it to 0.75x as well.
Thank you
You're welcome Harsith! I've put all of the theermanam videos into a playlist just now for ease of access th-cam.com/play/PLh1qKB2K9gOepRWY_DiAgH72hM8_7d59q.html. Even if you pick one video and play it on repeat for 5-10 minutes once a week, you'll find within a couple of months that you have a whole lot of theermanams up your sleeve, which you can then use when playing for songs/solos!
@@srj-studio I will do that. 👍
Nice singing and excellent mridangam accompaniment!👍💐
Thanks Uncle, great work fostering and developing Aishwarya's interest in Carnatic music! Looking forward to future collaborations.

Thank you.
What is the fingering for these lessons? (I have a mridangam teacher already but it's just he doesn't play this as he teaches me and doesn't play songs in class)
Hi there, nice to hear from you again. In terms of the fingering we are using: Thath dheeng kita thaka = num dhin kita thaki Thaangu dheengu dhin = num ki dhin ki dhin Thaka dhingu thaka dhin = numki dhin thom numki dhin (that particular thom becomes a tha in the alternate line) Thath dhin thaka dhin = num dhin thaki dhin Yeah to be honest with you, our school is pretty similar in that the expectation is that students progress through the basic lessons and all four major thaalams before accompanying songs. The reason being that it is important to develop the technical expertise first, and it gives you more variety in phrases to then apply in the accompaniment setting. Equally though there are others who learn primarily to play for bhajans where variety may be less of a concern, and hence some people go straight to playing for songs. I guess it depends on the bani and also the student's goals, and there's not necessarily one correct approach for all. You could ask your teacher if your school have similar lessons as I'm sure they will exist. That way, when your teacher feels you are ready, you can learn these types of lessons both with supervision and in a style consistent with all of your other learning. Good luck!

Superb!
Thank you.
For the song Bhaja Govindam, what exercises would suggest playing? (Could you also list the fingering in case I don't know)
Whilst I am more than happy to explain the lessons that we play, I do think that learning how to play the mridangam is something that should be done under the guidance of an experienced teacher, either face-to-face or online. You definitely seem quite interested in playing, so if you can find a teacher nearby to you, then they can show you both the basics of the instrument as well as how to accompany for specific songs including Bhaja Govindam. All the best!
Hi, its me again! What are the fingerings for the exercises?
Hi there, great to hear from you again. The right hand for the basic lesson played in each nadai is listed below. Khandham: thaka thath dhimi (num ki num dhin ki) Thisram: thaangu thath tha dhimi (num ki num num dhin ki, same as in the other video) Misram: thath dhimi thaka dhimi (num dhin ki num ki dhin ki) Chathusram: thaka thath dhimi thath dhimi (num ki num dhin ki num dhin ki) Again coordination of the left hand and the theermanams probably require more significant teaching input, best done in a face-to-face class setting or online.
Super.
Thank you.
Thank you 🙏🏽
What is the fingering for these lessons? ❤
Hi there. In terms of the right hand, they are as follows: 1. Num dhin dhin (x4) 2. Num dhin numki (x4) 3. Num ki num num dhin ki (x4) 4. Num kita thaka num dhin ki (x4) 5. Num kita thaka num kita thaka (x4) 6. Num kita thaka num kita thaka dhin - thom Num kita thaka num kita thaka dhin - thom Num kita thaka num kita thaka dhin Coordinating the left hand (where the 'thom's and 'tha's are played) is a bit harder to explain over text and is also school-dependent. So it's easier if you learn the coordination of the left hand from an experienced mridangam teacher directly, either in person or online.
Fabulous Keep up this fantastic work Wish you all the best
Thanks very much Sir.

Hi, anna! I'm from Sri Lanka. How did you learn the Aussie accent. I think you growing up in Australia from childhood is probably the reason why you speak like an Australian. 😊
Hi there! Yeah that's correct, I was born in and grew up in Brisbane (Australia), which is the same as a lot of the students in our school. So yeah it does mean we have Australian accents, but also means when I speak Tamil it unfortunately has an Australian accent too haha! Great to hear from you and hope you enjoyed the video.
@@srj-studio Yeah, I really enjoyed the video. I can speak like an Australian little bit. That's because I've been imitating like native English-speakers from childhood. But I can't continue speaking because I don't speak naturally. It's hard, honestly. So I want to learn Aussie English thoroughly and speak like an Australian naturally. Will I also be able to speak Australian English naturally just like you if I practice everyday? ☺
We are not experts on accents haha, but I think you should just speak English however suits you! Many of our parents (including Amma and Appa who have now spent the majority of their lives in Australia) speak English with a Tamil accent, and it is not a worry at all here. Over 20% of Australians speak a language other than English at home, and while there still are elements of discrimination, it is a very multicultural country. Based on your writing your English is much, much better than my Tamil, regardless of any accent. All the best!
