Hi I'm Andy, I'm a Guitar player who likes to tinker, I'm never satisfied and have a real problem with buying and selling gear, but I have a lot of fun with it all, this is my journey.
The Best Budget Humbuckers? Probuckers vs Toneriders!
Tonerider AC2 Classics vs Epiphone Probuckers - Epiphone Les Paul 50s
I swap out the Probuckers in my Epiphone inspired by Gibson Les Paul 50s Standard for the Tonerider AC2 Classics along with the wiring harness. But was this a waste of time or a worthy upgrade? Can you hear any difference?

Well Done Andy , I just subscribed !
Good playing, ❤
Thanks 👍🏻
Tone Rider pickups sounds as cheap as they are, purchased them(Alnico 2, single coil and humbuckers), they sound cheap and plastic/harsh(in unpleasant way) compared to Fender single coils, Gibson humbuckers, Seymour Duncan humbuckers.
Fair enough 😊 thankfully there are plenty of options for every taste and budget, thanks for watching 👍🏻
I got news for ya Mate... The ToneRider factory makes pickups for nearly all the major guitar manufacturers. They are just branded differently. The only difference is in your mind.
Even when I’ve ordered a guitar it’s been through a shop where I played it first. Both Americans instruments I’ve bought I’ve had for years now. Another reason why I buy from shops is because they are the reason Fender , Gibson and most manufacturers even exist.
Hi Andy, Recently I bought the Epiphone Les Paul Standard 50's and rewired the whole thing and put the Tonerider Alnico 2 classics in and they sound great! But then I got to thinking, was it worth the money? I could have just taken all the wiring out and replaced it and been good but I thought surely they (the Toneriders) would be better! Now I'm wondering if I didn't just waste my money but I still have the Probuckers for future endeavors if I decide to I guess. I was wanting to put the Seth Lover pickups in but the Toneriders were cheaper. Yeah, I jumped into all that prematurely! I have 2 Strats that I put the Seth Lover humbuckers in that sound fantastic! I liked your post, you remind me of me !!! lol 🤣
Haha yes that sounds very familiar 😂
I have this guitar and mine needed a lot of work to be any good. New nut, new bridge, new tuners, sanded the goop off the neck. But now it's my most played guitar. Plugged and unplugged it is a joy.
Demon fx is the best budget pedal brand, period the end. Their tube screamers sound exactly like the originals. They have the clone sequence down pat.
No mistake in buying a Casino. I have 3 a 1994 Peerless, 1965 John Lennon Limited Edition and a Worn Ebony….I need more.
What an awesome demo on the Casino. I also thought you guitar work was exceptionally good and definitely help make the band whole and comlete.
Thanks 😊👍🏻
Relax, buying a Casino is never a mistake. But I would never buy a guitar (or car/bike) I hadn't tried first
Does this have an actual spring inside?
What a great outro.
Thanks 👍🏻
Take the covers off the Toneriders. Or the Probuckers. Or both! It'll make make both sets sound like they got over a bad cold
Doubt it. Both pickups have nickel covers, which are non magnetic. So they shouldn't be affecting the tone in any way. Maybe you would get some more highs. But you can achieve the same thing by just turning up the treble on your amp.
@SohamBhattacharya3105 It's high mids you get. Watch the results thru a spectrum analyser to confirm or deny.
Great playing! The Casino sounds great! I’m considering buying one but I’m concerned with feedback on stage. You don’t seem to have any issues with it playing live.
Thanks! Yeah it’s a great guitar, I haven’t had any feedback issues, I don’t use a lot of gain and I’m never super loud though.
I don‘t buy anything impulsive, and so with guitars. And that‘s why I don't sell anything either. I like to tinker on guitars, till I like them very much. Then they are forever mine! Only one time I light hearted put my bid on ebay on a lightly used BC Rich koa mockingbird as a „joke“, not hoping that it would sell that low. Won the auction and almost regreted first, but turns out to be one of my best guitars now out of 9. 🤷🏻♂️
In your amp setting, the difference between both pickups is pretty small. The Burstbucker sound dryer, more focus around the fundamntal note, while Toneriders have a little bit wider range and therefore a certain sweetness and airiness. Fine overtones making the notes sound richer. A very subtile addition. I have the Toneriders, and they sound great on my Harley Benton LP knockoff. Edit: Did you thought of adjusting the height of the pole screws? I find the D string notoriously too weak sounding, in this vid it’s hearable too. So I raised the screw 1.2 mm. Accordingly the other screws too, ending up in a double staircase pattern: lowest G and E, then 0.5-0.7 mm raise on A and B, and highest: e- 1mm, D- 1.2mm. Sometimes the whole pickup has to be lowered after that by a tiny bit (about 1mm) Great comparison! Thank you!👍🏼
Thanks for watching! I think I set the pole pieces to the radius of the fretboard, I’m not sure, but I might try what you mentioned 👍🏻
fav tune is roys toy awesome
For me, i wouldnt count thinking of buying one for years, forgetting, then seeing one in a guitar store and jumping on it since it was the last one, then spending upwards of $300 on purely cosmetic modifications as "impulsive"
Purely cosmetic because i think the guitar sounds good on its own.
ah, tonemaster deluxe reverb spotted!
🤘🤘
Peter Greeny🤘🤘
Can't tell the difference but both sound great. I have the ACII's in a LP and think they're fantastic pickups. Great playing too.
Yeah they are very similar eh, thanks 👍🏻
I have the same guitar in sunburst and it's a real pleasure to play, currently my No1. Had the 59 standard as well, but had to return it due to a chipped neck and it wasn't even nearly as good quality wise. My luthier wasn't happy about it at all - lesser quality wood he said. I quite like the Probuckers, but after your comparison, I might swap them for the Toneriders... or Mojotone. Cheers!
Hey, great video! I was thinking about this swap on my 50s Epi LP, but haven't made the decision yet. After your comparison, I can clearly hear some more harmonic richness and sweetness of the AC2 pups (that's how I imagine the old PAFs sounded), quite surprised about that.
Nice playing! It’s nice to see something other than metal shredding!
Thanks 😊👍🏻
Thanks 😊👍🏻
Thanks 😊👍🏻
No offence intended but when I was watching the first part of the video before any playing, I started to have a little think about how you would play. I watch so many videos and some people talk it up with all the knowledge and then they play and you think, mate you need to stop giving advice 😂. As we all do I was playing the guessing game on how you would play and i thought to myself ahhh this guy will be one of those who is so so but won't be much good really. My god was I wrong 😂. It was one of those great youtube moments where you literally get humbled and surprised. Beautiful playing, delicious decision making, great phrasing and all round wow. I've been playing for 2 years now but you just get used to people giving lessons and advice and then it turns out they can hardly play...but I was made up when you played, made up that it wasn't another one of those immediately end video moments 😂. Fantastic!
Oh wow! Thank you very much! I’m made up now 😊👍🏻
Imitador de artista
Impulsive indeed, but usually i find stuff that needs to be tinkered with, currently eyeballing a Cort Sourse with sketchy wiring. Thinking of rebel90 p90ies I found your vid of the casino to see what p90ies sound like in a hollowbody. Nice gitaar & playing. Should I.....
Thanks! Yeah do it, why not eh! 😊👍🏻
Can someone who's bought this tell me what its like with an overdriven tone? I read one review that said it clips if you have it in the fx loop, if you have it pushed a bit too far.
There’s a Joey Landreth pedal? So that’s why he reminds me of Gary Clark sometimes. Does Gary uses that pedal?
I doubt very much he does but it’s the only fuzz I had at the time, it’s pretty versatile. 😊
Those T.R ac2's brought a beautiful coloured sweetness & quality tone w/ smooth tops.. geez , i can hear the difference ...
Just discovered this poking around on YT. Great video and explanation. I went through most of what you went through on my way to buying a worn olive drab. I love the guitar. I will not touch the stock electronics as I’ve fallen in love with how it sounds against my other guitars…unique. It’s is quite an easy guitar to play also (the thin neck). In the end it’s an option for me.
Can I tell any difference...frankly no. It seems to me that the Probuckers and the Tonerider AC2's must be voiced very similarly, they also have a similar impedance, and well, to me sound identical. I actually have a guitar with a Tonerider AC2 installed (Yamaha Pacifica 212VQM) but I bought it second hand, and therefore I don't know how the original (Alnico 5) humbucker sounded.
I love my Casino .......
Guitars are 100% impulsive…..I also bought this guitar…
Man you can play! And great choice of music! Tell you the truth, they both sound awesome to me.
hahahaha, I have ADHD as an adult, both the hyperactive type and the inattentive type, I understand what you mean!
I was thinking about replacing the Probuckers in the Epi 50s Les Paul but honestly (at least through TH-cam) the Tonerider AC2s more or less the same. They do seem to have a new Alnico 5 set called the Birmingham. Maybe that will sound different enough to warrant swapping the pickups. Either way, I will certainly be holding on to the Probuckers. They are excellent A2 PAF style pickups.
I’m having a total brain fart, what song is the first riff?
Super tasty playing, i am 100% with you re: gear. Worship player in the states, loadout ease definitely matters!! Great presentation , i hope your channel just explodes. Subbed.
Hey! Thanks! 👍
I'd put DemonFX pedals against anything on the market. Realistic pricing is the key.
Great intro! You really hit the notes that are unique to Muddy for sure. I saw Muddy in a small club back in the 70s with his band including the young Hollywood Fats. I sat about six feet from the stage, right in line with Muddy. He was absolutely fantastic, not just his guitar playing and vocals, but his powerful charismatic personality. I have never experienced that with anyone else since.
Wow, yeah I bet that was awesome!
Real nice video. Great intro and opens the door for a lot more. I like your sound and groove. I saw Hollywood Fats when he was 18 years old, playing with Muddy Waters. He was an extremely talented guitar player who later made some great records, and who died way too young
Seems like i need it
Hey Andy....great video and examples of how versatile the casino is. BTW, couldn't agree more about obsessing then buying your next great guitar then selling it on Reverb 🤣. Guilty as charged!!!!
I heard someone even say why wait for a king of tone, just get 2 princes
Nice!
It does sound familiar!
It has a major drawback: it won't remember the time settings for the delay after you powered it off. I set it to my likings, turned everything off for the night, wanted to play again next day, I hadn't changed anything, but delay time had reset to somewhere in the middle, probably some default setting. This is a real let down. I decided to keep it for all the options and possibilities and because I got it at a bargain during sale, but that one thing is bugging me. Maybe I have a faulty unit but it's too late to return it now.
Too bad Gibson forgot that a 50's Les Paul Standard had a LONG NECK TENON, Epi didnt!
😂
