Firehouse - Love of a Lifetime (1990) (HQ Audio)
39 Years ago today, Firehouse a rock band formed in my hometown state North Carolina, in Charlotte. Released their first self-titled album around the same day the attacks on the world trade center happened 11 years later.
Many say it's a coincidence. But for those brave men who went up in those towers to save the lives of many that were unfortunately lost, this song and band serves as an honor to those brave firemen who risked their very lives for the lives of others.

You run, run, run away It's your heart that you betray Feeding on your hungry eyes I bet you're not so civilized Well, isn't love primitive A wild gift that you want to give Break out of captivity And follow me stereo jungle child Love is the kill You're heart's still wild Shooting at the walls of heartache bang, bang I am the warrior Well, I am the warrior And heart to heart you'll win If you survive, the warrior, the warrior You talk, talk, talk to me You're eyes touch me physically Stay with me, we'll take the night As passion takes another bite Oh, who's the hunter, who's the game I feel the beat call your name I hold you close in victory I don't want to tame your animal style You won't be caged In the call of the wild Shooting at the walls of heartache bang, bang I am the warrior Well, I am the warrior And heart to heart you'll win If you survive, the warrior, the warrior I am the warrior Shooting at the walls of heartache (shooting at the walls of heartache) The warrior I am the warrior And heart to heart you'll win Heart to heart you'll win If you survive, the warrior, the warrior Shooting at the walls of heartache I am the warrior Yes, I am the warrior And victory is mine Shooting at the walls of heartache I am the warrior Shooting at the walls of heartache bang, bang I am the warrior

To me, this is probably my favorite Styx song, although they did have a lot of great songs, especially here on The Grand Illusion. But JY definitely crafted an extremely killer riff and the lyrics are just so bitter angry and cutting. Few will probably remember that in 1977 when TGI came out that the Miss America pageant was still this vulgar heaping monstrosity of a display and just felt to me, even at 16, that the lovely ladies were being ridiculously, hideously, over exploited. I felt it even before I heard this song, and it was like somehow James Young had just read my mind, and he unleashed this feral torrent of brutally raw rock power, and I almost felt sorry for whoever the next Miss America got to be, because, in truth? After the coiled rattlesnake strike of James's guitar riff, and the searing poisonous venom dripping from his microphone as he sang the brutally honest yet scorchingly deadly lyrics? I couldn't imagine that it wouldn't just deflate the next contestants in the next pageant? I just saw the bloated Hindenburg blimp of that pageant catching fire and exploding into flames and the newscaster screaming "Oh the Humanity!" as the Hindenburgian Miss America pageant just literally blew itself to flaming bits under the weight of the furious bloody recriminations of James's lyrics. I mean really? How could that farce even continue when it was ripped open so forcefully by that song? My favorite verses that have been searingly imprinted forever on my musical DNA are towards the end of the song where James just lets loose the most lethal volley of riffs and scorched earth lyrics: "Well it's true Just take a look The cover sometimes Makes the book And the judges Did they ever ask To read between Your lines In your cage At the Human Zoo They all stop To look at you Next year What will you do When you have Been forgotten?" I just remember how devastatingly honest the song always felt to me. I kinda felt a little twinge of sadness for anyone who could possibly ever enter yet another female sexploitation beauty pageant, especially the Miss America pageant, after hearing this song. Almost. I don't imagine any of the pageant participants were allowed to listen to this brutal death knell of what to me felt like the entire beauty pageant horror show disastrophy. In my heart, it always felt like it should have ended them all, if the world was fair, and what we believed should come true could and did come true. Of course, sadly, that song didn't end them. But maybe it opened the eyes of a few who had otherwise been staggering around in the dark blinded by their towering egocentric greed and their need to dominate and exploit beautiful women for "fun and profit." I don't suspect it did? But if life was fair? It would have. That to me? Is how good this song is, and how deeply it's spoken to me over the decades since I first heard it on the radio in 1977. 47 years ago now? Where does the time go. I think the album was played on then LA rock and pop radio station KKDJ. Or maybe it was on "KWST. K-West." My 2 favorite stations before KMET, the Mighty Met, KLOS, and KROQ were on my music listening radar. And before that the heavy metality that was KNAC popped up on my radar. (Just after I had a brief fling with KEZY 1190AM Kicks Ass! The first heavy metal station in SoCal and the ONLY heavy metal radio station out of Anaheim, California, and the only rock station ON AM radio before talk radio pulled the plug on any further AM music radio stations and permanently buried the format. I met lots of the DJs there too. The late great Megaphone Mark Denis, Lovely Rita/Rita Wilde, who eventually graduated to KLOS as their music director, Rick O'Shay, Stay Away Ray, and the delightfully adorable Strawberry Jan, who had a bit of tragic misfortune derail her radio career, after she spectacularly graduated KEZY to LA's consistently #1 radio station KIIS Kiss FM. Auto accident, if memory serves. Severe TBI. Horrible. Well. As if there's any other kind of TBI than severe & horrible.)
