Carbon arc lamp was the type of electric lamp that was commonly used for street lighting , in ww2 searchlight and outdoor illumination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It works by creating an arc of electricity between two carbon electrodes, which produces a bright, white light
Carbon arc lamp were initially used for theater and stage lighting because of their bright, intense light, but their use was expanded to street lighting and searchlights due to their high efficiency and long lifespan. However, they were eventually replaced by other lighting technologies, such as incandescent and fluorescent lights, which were more efficient and had longer lifespans. Today, Carbon arc lamp are primarily used in scientific and industrial applications, such as in welding and cutting operations.
Nikola tesla developed certain new and useful improvements in Carbon arc lamp which are explained in this video. He designed the automatic feeding and striking mechanism and some more improvements.
