Electronics enthusiast who started building audio amplifier since 13 years old. After decades of career hard work in various industries in many parts of the world, I manage to return to my previous life - electronics. Triggered by COVID lock down, this old trade brings me joy and memories. Something rare and precious during these challenging days.
Audio Note L2 Phono Amplifier (Solitude)
Classical Audio Note circuitry - Excellent Vocal.
Although this L2 has the same sound signature with the Meishu phono amp, they are vastly different. L2 is more neutral, clean. Low gain which I need to turn up the volume to 11-12 o'clock. Meishu is more musical with normal gain. Usually 9 o'clock on the volume control.
Both are very good. Just a matter of mix and match with the rest of the hifi system.

Classic design with three 12AX7 tubes. Fast and clean with deep bass. Could pair with CAT SL1 very well. Comparatively, this EAR is a bit more all round while the Audio Note Meishu phono amp excels in vocal. Both will bring out the subtle details out of your LPs. You are listening to music, not equipment.

Fun and cute. Russian subminiature tube 6N16B as output stage in MoOde 9.0.6 Raspberry Pi 4B music streamer. 3D sound stage is very good. Sonic signature is warm yet transparent and natural. Compared to the two tube output stages I have built, this 6N16B is faster than the Lampizator 5670 and more musical than the Audio Note 6DJ8 tube output. Highly recommended to any DIYer.

Can you share contact number?
hello , is this better than a tube preamp? I'm looking for a good preamp for my zerozone class D TPA 3255 monoblocs. Can you suggest me the best option?
It depends on what you listen to. This 6010 is fast and clean. It's all round suitable for all kinds of music. If vocal is your preference, then a tube preamp is most suitable. Usually they are very musical with magical vocal.
@@thomasdiyaudio5353 which is the best (clone) tube preamp you can suggest that i can buy directly from Ali for example? budget 300 EUR max? also max 2 tubes in there or else things get expensive.. (1 rca output is enough for me)
Hello I have these speakers. Would you be interested in building a pair of these upgraded crossovers to send to the UK please.
Possible. However, I live in Hong Kong and the freight charge to UK is quite high and I am not sure if there is any import duty. What is your email address? Mine is tmpchan@jethighintl.com

@@richardlui8914 I haven't had the chance to listen to the 300A clone hence I can't be absolutely sure. However, I think both 300A and 711 share similar sound signature while 711 has twice the output power.

Lampizator is/was a huge proponent of Open Baffle speakers. He had a dedicated site to his journey building them. Many of your audio objectives might be realized with a shift in speaker design. Your Amos have excellent clarity and likely good imaging. There is an openness to boxless speakers that is intoxicating. Space is an issue however. I’m using bookshelf speakers now due to my living situation. Just my two cents. Great channel btw!
Totally agree. One day when I have space, I would surely try Open Baffle speakers. In particular the DIY speaker published in Lampizator's DIY site.
@ The bad news is that many of the vintage drivers he advocates are now insanely expensive. The good news is that there are many high efficiency drivers being manufactured that are reasonably priced…even some alnico. I preferred 16ohm drivers because I could run 4 in parallel and still have a reasonable overall impedance for the amp. I look forward to seeing g what you come up with!
Hi. Thanks for this video. I am in the process of cloning my original ax-2 but found that the vifa c17 is no longer in production, so am using used. Can I ask where you sourced your woofers?

@@thomasdiyaudio5353 keep us posted!
Vocals seem to sound better with the tube output stage. Overall sounds more neutral. I like it.
Tube output really takes the 1387 DAC to a different level. Also the output capacitor and the IV resistor are critical in sound quality.
Hello Thomas, any chance you do a step by step video of how you build this instead of teasing us. We will be very grateful. Thanks
Do you just need the schematics? Or a complete review of how this is built?
Thanks for replying. It would be great to have the schematics first but best to have a step by step. Do you like the sound better with the RPi streamer or CS8412? I don't recognize your CS8412 board.
I use the CS8412 board to connect to CD transport via coaxial. The sound quality is slightly better than Pi streamer. My Pi streamer setup is 1387 DAC connects directly to Pi via the 40 pin GPIO with FLAC files on USB thumb drive.
I am planning to build an upgrade version of this standalone DAC with better components in a proper chassis. At the moment, the vocal is better than my dual 9038 Pro DAC. String instruments sound more real. Entire presentation is more natural.
I’m currently sourcing the parts for the ProtoDac. The upgraded foil resistors for DC offset are tough to find in a 430 .

Hi Thomas, came across your interesting video on this Raspberry 1387 Dac, could you kindly share where you got the circuit board from and the essential parts for this raspberry dac. Thanks
I used standard single side prototype board for point to point soldering. The circuit is very simple hence I didn't bother getting printed circuit board. The most important component is the output capacitor which pretty much decides the sound quality. I use GAD and if you can invest more, go for Mundorf Aluminium Oil or Miflex. I buy all my components on Taobao from mainland China. If you live outside of Asia, you get buy them from Aliexpress. For north America, partsconnexion.com sells high quality capacitors at very reasonable prices. Some are actually cheaper than Taobao. After you finish building this basic one, I highly recommend you to add tube output stage. I have a few videos on this. Tube output takes the DAC to a different level. Personally, I prefer the Lampizator output to the Audio Note one. Have fun!
Thanks for insights Thomas will speak with you on WeChat thanks again

The music sounds spectacular on my usually crappy tablet speakers! Wowsers! Mids and highs are exceptional on my tablet speakers like never before!
Great crossover improvement, but the overhang of the cabinet around the baffle will cause diffraction issues also the bass/mid driver could have been rebated flush. Nit picking, but you went to such lengths to optimise the design.....
Thank you for your input. This DIY is based on the original Audio Note AX Two produced in Denmark (early days when AN started selling speakers). Baffle position of the latest AN speakers is different.

2:37 do Think it possibel to make diy crossover for Audio Note AN/E ?? By the Way thanks fore youre video Glenn from Denmark 😊
Absolutely yes. The trick here is to find the drivers. ANK sells them but are rather expensive. It seems they are produced by Scan Speak but I have yet to find the model number. If you give me your email address, I can send you the schematics of the crossover and the dimensions of the speaker for AN-E. It's on my to do list.
請問這個唱盤你覺得符合個價位表現嗎?謝謝你
I paid about US$200 for this. Inside there is a shielded power transformer with linear power supply (low cost major brand CD transport/players usually use switching power supply). One of the best deal I ever had.
Did you make this preamp yourself?
Yes, I did. I bought the PCB on Taobao, then sourced all the components and put everything together. Very satisfying with the sound quality.
Fun project
Yes, indeed. Classical example of how to apply theory in the real world.
I love this DAC because 1. AKM Chip. 2. USB Armaner .❤❤❤
hi first of all congratulation for your excellent creations and systems From your other videos i understand you have a great knowledge of preamps What would be your first choice for a solid state line preamp ? i like natural and 3D sound a lot Thank you very much gino
Each of the preamp I have built (tube and solid state) is very good with its own sound signature. If you have to ask me, my personal preference of solid state is the Goldmund 27. It pairs well with solid state power amp and probably best with Goldmund (I do plan to build one when I got a chance). I am using the Goldmund 27 to drive my vintage 40 years old Leach power amp as my TV/video sound system which I use almost every day. If you want just vocal and simple classical music, then I would high recommend Audio Note all the way. Preamp, power amp and speaker. I have videos of these. Absolutely stunning. You can't find anything else with this musicality.
@@thomasdiyaudio5353 Good morning and thank you very much for your very kind and valuable response I know Audio Note and their great sound but they are out of my league Speaking of the Goldmund, I see that there are clones both to be assembled and already assembled Personally I was looking at some Accuphase clones of which I saw in a video very good measurements such as perfect square wave response from 20 to 20kHz. If I think that I hear 14kHz at most I'm studying the Goldmund carefully, the schematic of which I found online I see it has a first stage buffer - volume - output stage Few preamps have an input buffer which I think is beneficial Thanks again and best regards gino
@@gino3286 MBL6010 also has a buffer stage. I am considering to build one for my friend.
@@gino3286 By the way, Audio Note amplifier circuit design is very simple. Component count is rather low. It's the power supply a bit complicated.
@@thomasdiyaudio5353 Good morning and thanks again for your very kind help i have seen the MBL and my guess is that is very good indeed I only listen to CDs and files as final amplifiers i am quite satisfied my obsession is the line preamp It is very important for the overall sound I really like the sound of the tubes but it's the high voltages and high output impedance that worry me My power amps have even 5K of input impedance Very low As for the pre-amps design, I'm confused by the fact that some have only one transistor, others as many as 30 I would tend to be minimalist like Nelson Pass' bride of zen who uses just one mosfet per channel! but 7 times voltage gain is too high I prefer max 3 times voltage gain However, I am very fascinated by clones of famous preamplifiers such as the Goldmund and the Accuphase I don't know whether to throw myself into an already assembled clone I'm still studying Thanks again and best regards gino

Are you driving the AN AX Two with the Leach amps?
In the video, I used DIY FM255 and FM711 to drive the AX Two. This was when I first finished building the speakers. Afterwards, I have been using my DIY Meishu Tonmeister 300B to drive the AX Two. This is now my reference setup for vocal.
Dear Thomas, the info you post contains an error. Booth the original version of the Leach amplifier (1976) and the 4.5 version (2000) were created by the same person, the Professor W. Marshall Leach, Jr. who died in 2010. Anyway, the amp is a very good sounding one.
If this is the case, I should apologize for my misunderstanding and mistake. Did you build any of his amplifier?

Hello. How does it compare to brzhifi su-10?
In my system, they sound very similar. Probably due to the same analog output design. The SU-10 AK4499EX sounds slightly brighter on the high end while the NXC02 is more all round, nothing stands out significantly while the sound quality is very good.
